Many have suggested that the length of these deals were to keep the AAV down (with the teams not worrying about the end of the deals). I don't think ANYONE, even the Padres, thinks X has 11 very good years in him. They know it will largely be dead money and are okay (as long as it bring them a trophy). Which, sure, but Devers making just about as much in shorter years is great except it still brings him towards the end of his career. So, unless he doesn't think he wants to play past 37 and just go from there, I don't know why he wouldn't hold out for 13 or 14 years at a slightly less AAV. But the human element is possible. If he has 334 million coming to him (not counting money already earned plus endorsements) I could see the player being OK with walking away after a "short" 11 year deal. The point is that I'm not sure the years matter to the players. They seem, largely, just a tool that let's teams manage the Lux Tax as needed. 300+ is 300+. Same money on shorter years just means a better chance of another contract for the player. Just my opinion, of course.

I think if the Sox sign Devers it'll be for something like 11years/310mm. My confidance level that the Sox actually sign Devers to such a contract at a 7 (out of 10). Oops, so I was off by $20mm!
