So happy to see Big Papi get elected. Wished I could still get MLB network so I could have seen the announcement live, but really happy for the greatest Red Sox clutch player they've ever had and the guy who was most responsible for turning the Sox from heartbroken runnerups to 3 time World Championships.
No one player is responsible for that, but he comes the closest. Thrilled for him. Can't wait to hear his speech. Should be very entertaining. MLB network must be sighing in relief that it wasn't a shutout.
So Minnesota is represented heavily with all 3 living HOFers with Kaat, Oliva, and Ortiz having played for for the Twins, not that Ortiz will be remembered for that, haha.

I also look at this as the final disposition in the debate about Papi and PEDs. The voters didn't buy it. Those who want to be bitter about that (I'm looking you, MFY fans) can wallow in their misery. They'll be doing it on the losing side. Again.
Checkmate.

Clearly the anonymous voters did a little bit. He had a solid drop but still made it.

His drop was very similar to that for Frank Thomas, who had the precise opposite of PED suspicions.
Honestly, 78% on the first ballot (including over 70% of private ballots) is a really impressive performance for anybody, and none of the PED guys have gotten anywhere close to that.

My standard answer is, "Well, if Joe comes out of retirement and wins another three SBs, we can re-open the debate. For now, it's over."

Fun to remember this all started with a Spring Training sacrifice that was not well-received...
On Feb. 27, 2003, the Sox hosted their crosstown rivals, the Twins, in the first game of the spring. Ortiz went 0 for 2 with a pair of ground outs, the first marking perhaps the most important change of Ortiz’s big league career.
“When I played for the Twins, back then, when you moved a runner over with a man on second and no outs, it was like you hit a home run,” said Ortiz. “People would high-five you and congratulate you.
“This is something I never forget about — my very first at-bat here with the Red Sox, Grady Little was the manager. It was in spring training. I’m facing my boy, Kyle Lohse. There’s a man on second, no outs. He threw me a two-seamer over there in the righthanded batter’s box. I went out there to get it, rolled over, and hit a ground ball to second to move the runner over.
“When I got back to the dugout, nobody high-fived me. Grady Little was waiting for me. He told me, ‘Next time, I’m not expecting you to move him over. I’m expecting you to bring him in.’
“When he said that to me, he had no idea of the monster that he woke up. He woke up that monster in me that I knew I could be.

Watched the whole thing, thanks! Surprised it didn't include "This is our $%ing city!" speech. But otherwise awesome.

So happy right now Papi’s in!! We’re so lucky, 18 years ago we were reeling from the Boone walk-off, lost a franchise player in Garciaparra. Now we’ve had 4 World Series, Boone has lost twice in the playoffs to us, life is good and Papi delivered for generations of fans.

Next few years will be pretty interesting now that we don’t have to talk about Bonds, Clemens and Schilling every year anymore. I wanted Schilling to get it but I cared a lot more about Ortiz and Pedro.

I'm really surprised how elated I am by Papi to the HOF. Chris' video post above brings me right back to 2004, which is a place that I really like to be. For me, Papi is THE Boston player of all time. Never has any one man meant so much. You can make an argument for others, but I'm not listening to it. I'm usually an advocate of a "tight" HOF, but not today. Reason and logic be damned.

Congratulations David Ortiz.
You’re the single best free agent ever signed by my favorite team. You deserve this honor and you have my very sincere thanks for the hundreds of separate times you’ve brought a true moment of joy to this lifelong Sox fan. It’s been wonderful watching you hit a baseball the way you do.

It’ll be interesting to see how time treats those two sets of concerns. Schilling has an undeniable baseball case with no steroid suspicions - it’s all political and personal stuff. I would think those emotions will mellow somewhat with time. Clemens and Bonds have even stronger baseball cases but major baseball-related black marks. To me, those seem more serious and lingering w/r/t their HOF candidacies, but who can really predict? I do think all the steroids guys will get in eventually, and to me that seems like a fair way to do it. Not through the normal channels, and make them wait a bit - maybe even after they’re no longer alive. Clemens and Bonds do deserve to be in just on the strength of their pre-steroid accomplishments, and the seal’s already been broken with Piazza, so you kind of have to let them in at some point I personally agree that Schilling has a very strong case, if you set aside all matters pertaining to his personal rottenness. But he's very marginal by the Hall's own standards. Bear in mind that in 2011, Kevin Brown, who had a very similar career to Schilling, was bounced in his first year on the ballot with only 2.1%. Bert Blyleven, who had over 100 fWAR, only got in with 77% in his 14th year on the ballot.
But I suspect that in ten years, when a 150 IP season is an anomaly, the committees will look more kindly on this last generation of true starting pitchers. It would be good news for John Santana, David Cone, and a few others, too. And if he ever manages to simply not be a toxic public figure (a big if, to be sure), Schilling's sins will probably be washed away as well.
Schilling and Brown might feel similar, but ultimately Schilling has a stronger case than Brown. Big WAR advantage on bWAR and marginal on fWAR - difference being bWAR uses RA9 and fWAR uses fip - bigger/better counting numbers - Schilling hit the 3k Ks threshold, Brown remains significantly off, and Schilling has the added bonus of postseason heroics, whereas Brown was a decidedly mediocre postseason performer.

Cooperstown is about an hour and half down the road. I'm hoping to make this trek to see Big Papi inducted.

Very excited to see Papi make it. Well deserved. So many amazing amounts.
He also went out still playing the game at an elite level, which is nice because many are shadows of their former selves at the end.

So happy for Big Papi. That man should never have to buy a drink in his life.
He and Pedro absolutely changed the culture of the Red Sox franchise.
I cried when Pedro was elected, and I've got tears in my eyes now. It's hard to explain to people who didn't go through the pre-2004 years, but that team's victory freed us to be fans again, instead of feeling like we were destined to be Charlie Brown, always missing the football that Lucy pulled away at the last second.
Thanks Papi and congratulations!
