Is it really Ort v. Ward though? Ort is either about to get DFA'ed or not long for the roster. He's end of the roster fodder and if you had Ward in that spot you'd be a little more hamstrung. I think the gripe is whether Ward should have been protected over Abreu, Hamilton, etc. Still have to see how it plays out. Either way, not really sure how that hurts them in the short term. I would rather have Ward taken in Rule 5 as he has to stay on the 26-man Will the Nationals or someone all year or the Red Sox get him back like they just got Politi back. Conversely, I would rather DFA Ort as if someone takes him he only needs to stay on their 40, which is WAY easier for them to keep. Ward has a decent chance of being returned. Also, at the time, the Red Sox had something like 24 pitchers vs 16 position players on the 40 (way too many pitchers). Darwinzon, Seabold,…. were traded….purged from the team to bring in the next wave of prospects and FA, waiver claim,… the team roster has turned over which needs to happen in order for the next playoff run.

That's only a problem, though, if you're completely unwilling to use guys like Mata or Murphy or Walter in a situation like what they have now, needing a guy for 12 days. I'd rather have Ward in AAA and Mata in the majors for 2 weeks than Ort in MLB and Mata in AAA. But like you said, let's see if Ort is even around for that long.

"Ward is one of eight remaining relievers in big league camp competing for four open slots in the bullpen, with Kyle Finnegan, Carl Edwards Jr., Hunter Harvey and Erasmo Ramirez all assured of heading north with the club. Ward joins left-hander Anthony Banda and righties Alex Colome, Mason Thompson, Paolo Espino, Wily Peralta, Andres Machado and Hobie Harris in a down-to-the-wire competition for the final spots.
“I think if we do keep him, it’s because he earned it and that we like him,” Martinez said. “As of right now, he’s done really well. Right now, we’re considering him being part of our bullpen, the long guy.”"

Ort might get DFAed today. Probably not since he seems to have 9 lives but its possible. Ultimately is Ward going to win your team a title? No. But I'd rather bet on the younger guy, especially on a bridge/rebuilding team. Keeping Ort as long as they did never really made sense.
I think Washington keeps Ward as a long man unless he just really sucks this season. In that case, he's not going to help the Sox anyways.

Thad Ward has been bad for Washington - 5.86 ERA/6.10 FIP, -.3 WAR. 21 walks in 25 innings. All in relief while getting babied with lots of rest. Not out of the realm of possibility that he gets returned since keeping him on the 40 all offseason probably doesn't look very attractive.
Much ado about nothing

He also basically skipped Triple-A. I still think they'd have been well served to keep him as a depth option over a couple of those they chose to keep. I'm not as familiar with the Nats' system, so maybe a few of the guys I don't know are better than I realize, but it doesn't appear that they'd have a roster crunch that would necessitate cutting a depth starter with three options.

Ward was placed on the 15-day IL. I believe they technically could keep him on the IL or slow roll his rehab now that he's played 90 days in the majors. He's been pretty brutal this year (7.12 ERA).
