If the bullpen blows this game - there won't be a Circle of Trust. It will instead be a Ring of Fire. And it burns, burns, burns. The ring of fire.

We might yet get this game over the line. But it is bullpens like this that can transform what might have been a 7-3 west coast trip into a 5-5 (or worse).

Amazingly only 1.5 GB in the race for the final WC berth.

Amazingly only 1.5 GB in the race for the final WC berth. Unfortunately there's 4 other teams within 4 games of the last wild card. One of these teams are due to go on a bit of a run, so it better be the Sox soon. It'll help that the division will start facing each other in July, bring one of Tampa or Toronto back closer to .500 It doesn't help that the other 2 divisions are a lot weaker and 2 of LAA, Mariners, Guardians, White Sox, Texas could beat up their weak divisions.

Who here thought injury prone Jed Lowrie would be the last of our 2005 first rounders in the majors? Lowrie can only stay healthy in Oakland and Houston. The Mets paid $20,000,000 over two years for 7 at bats - 0 hits - 1 walk!! That is $2,850,000+ per out!

Of those others teams, as currently constituted, I really don't see any of them pulling away though. Yes they have an easier schedule, but I think the Red Sox can certainly slowly and methodically make up ground or at least keep pace. And if the Sox add some players that will improve their chances of closing out games, then I think they can become clear front-runners for the last WC spot, and who knows, perhaps challenge for WC#2 or WC#1. It would be nice if they could start enhancing the BP in the next few weeks, before we run the AL East gauntlet again.

I just wanted to point out that even though the A's are wearing a shoulder patch to honor me, I can't be bought, I'm rooting for the Sox.

Amazingly only 1.5 GB in the race for the final WC berth. If the season ended today, every team with a winning record would make the playoffs, including the Angels at 27-26.
I hate expanded playoffs so much.

The Angels are the favorite for the third wildcard. They were bigger favorites before their current 9 game losing streak

I get what you're saying, but I'm thankful that the format makes the 1-2 seeds a big prize, and 3-4 getting all home games makes those seeds worth fighting for too.

First, piddly little three-game series in the wild card round. In baseball, that is very nearly a coin flip.
Second: The #4 seed is very often going to be stronger than the #3 seed, because the former will be the best team that happened to have an even stronger team in their division while the latter will be the worst team that happened not to have a better team in their division. Compare last season's Dodgers (106 wins) and Braves (88 wins). So we'll still get scenarios like the worst thing about last year's playoffs, which was the Dodgers facing the Giants before the LCS.
Every fan, then, should root for their team to finish with the second-best record in the league. Yay.

Yeah it's weird that they'd be so precious about the #1 seed from facing a division winner. Honestly it sounds like a handout to the AL/NL Central teams, who scratch and claw for a million tiny advantages every CBA.

The Rangers called up Ezequial Duran, who they got in the Joey Gallo trade.
For those wondering, the current scoreboard is:
Yankees: Joey Gallo .3 WAR, 4 months left
Rangers: Glenn Otto .7 WAR 5.5 years of service time left Josh Smith, .4 WAR in 5 games, Fangraphs preseason #92 prospect, 6 years of service time left Ezequial Duran #66 prospect in baseball, 6 years of service time left

In a future game against the Yankees, a great box score would include: Whitlock - 7 IN - 0 ER - Win Ort - 1 IN - 0 ER - Hold German - 1 IN - 0 ER - Save

If German turns in a few helpful years in the pen, that deal will be a low key fleecing. Ottavino on his $8 million salary wasn't exactly an albatross the Sox took on
