Houck with his best Kimbrel impersonation. We’ll take it

I guess there are people still awake, after all!
Gutting out a win that was never as easy as it seemed like it should be.
Sorry but I wasn't thrilled with Houck. He needs to attack more. Let the closer search continue.

Red Sox are 8-2 in their last 10 and have actually LOST ground on the Yankees. Crazy.

Without reviewing bunch of data, the last out is the hardest hit ball I remember since Houck to the pen.

Let them burn themselves out in the first half, they’ll run out of gas and be a 2nd round exit as an aside I see the bullpen of the Sox being a strength by august- seems like ppl are starting to find their slots and it seems like we could be having some high-powered reinforcements joining them in the 2nd half Bobby starting to show signs of life the last couple of weeks

We win and y’all still complaining. This is why fewer and fewer people are here during the games. Stop with the negativity! He came in and faced the heart of the order for his 2nd career save. Cut the man some slack.

That’s so negative. We scored. We’re winning and in position to tax their bullpen big time in game 1 of this series. I stand by my statement. I agree with UJ. The Red Sox left the bases loaded.

You still get home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but you get the 3 game series like everyone else. You could win 110 games and then be bounced by the game number 164 (the next 2 games after the season is over).

I like the idea of Houck as closer. Last night was interesting. no hard contact, but on the edge of wildness.
He has pretty enigmatic stuff. As of now, doesn't seem to fit starter. Want to use him more than a 2-4 inning guy 1-3 time a week. Can he close ? Sometimes, I feel as though there isn't a defined role for what he has to offer. It is maximum swing and miss stuff and an absolute riot to watch, but can he harness command ?
In between pitches he looks he is just chillin', but you wonder.....
Really looking forward to see it this is gonna be his thing, if they keep throwing him out there.

He was working on a splitter, but I don't think he trusts it that much. He can still go to it against LHB on occasion. He doesn't have the a third pitch that separates from his fastballs and sliders. The best of Tanner Houck is when he's dialing it up with his stuff. The command is the only issue, like you said. I think Winkowski is in the same boat as Houck, only Winkowski's stuff isn't as good (but still could be great for a bullpen).

Hate to be that guy, but unless policies change or he decides to get vaxxed, Tanner can't close let alone pitch in Canada. Same goes for Sale. Those could turn into crucial games in the end, we'll see. Maybe Canada relaxes its policy.

Everything going right for the Yankees this year.

Those could turn into crucial games in the end, we'll see. Maybe Canada relaxes its policy. All true but they have to plan around it. Same for Judge and the MFYs. At least for pitchers you can plan to pitch them the game before Canada and then they just get three days rest, which is not unusual. It would only be really bad if Houck was a lights-out closer by then. It's worse for an MVP candidate like Judge although with him you take the built-in three days of rest because he's so injury prone.
End of this month in the middle of a three-city trip, so I guess they just go straight to Chicago from Cleveland. I wonder if the team makes them go home to Boston or to Ft. Myers to work out.
The killer is going to be the penultimate series of the season, 9/30 - 10/2. They're likely to really need those games, especially against TOR. One relatively easy fix (again, if Houck doesn't establish himself as the closer) is to piggyback the two of them the day before that series.

I agree with UJ. The Red Sox left the bases loaded. Then in the top of the 7th they had 1st and 3rd, nobody out and got only one run on a GIDP (which prompted my reply). Yeah, they got another run but you really want to see more than that, especially against a guy who was throwing 101 but was all over the place and not missing any bats.
Every win is a win but that one was kind of frustrating. We got the ace going tonight - let's have a laugher.
