The Yankees actually lost a game! Yeah. My Yankee friend down the street was disconsolate. "They were way ahead and let up"! I told him that they have the best record in baseball, had won 9 in a row, had the lowest ERA for starters and relievers, the highest run differential and the most home runs of any team. His response was a terse..."So what! They lost!" As addendum, he has dementia.

I would actually think about locking up Pivetta on a team friendly contract at this point. He's clearly a starter for the foreseeable future.
Less importantly, he might be my favorite player on this team. He shows his heart on his sleeve everytime he pitches and I like that.
He's talented enough to break out to be any kind of 2-5 starter he wants to be. He's a wildcard. Good luck finding a value on him. I just like him on this team, even with his warts as a player.

Great win! Sox-tied for 3rd WC and Tigers up next. The AL East has played .615 ball outside their division, while AL Central has played .448. This despite the East playing "just" .542 versus the Central directly. The AL East has played .670 ball in 112 games against the West and the NL while the Central has played .442 in 120.
The Guardians have a huge and unfair advantage in the WC race. We're 0.5 behind them but 3 games ahead excluding within-division play. They've played 6 extra games outside the division and have lost them all (29-23 versus our 29-17).

In the era of chartered flights and expanded playoffs, I sort of wish MLB would ditch divisions altogether (keeping the AL/NL separation) or go back to an East/West split in both leagues.

I want expansion to 32 teams, with two 8-team conferences in each league. I've worked out a schedule where there are virtual divisions -- each conference is divided in two geographically -- but just to get to 162 games. And you play just 2 extra games against each of your neighbors, by playing a 4 game and a 3 game series home and away. Those are the only 4-game series, and the only schedule imbalance within a conference. You play the teams in the other conference home and away once. The abominable two-game series are eliminated.
Interleague play is a 6 year cycle. You play 3 games against all 8 teams in the matching conference, half at home and half away. Then the same, with home / away swapped. In the 3rd year East plays West the same way. Then repeat, with year 6 swapping home and away. No "traditional opponent" crap. Sox fans see the NL East teams once every 3 years and the NL West teams once every six years. Every series is an event.
This fits in the current schedule (26 weeks plus the preceding Fri/Sat/Sun) perfectly. The only tweak you need is that the ASB is a universal off day on Thursday, Home Run Derby Friday night, Futures Game Saturday afternoon, All-Star Game early Sunday evening, then another off day for everyone.
Currently we play an absurd 47% of our games against 14% of our possible opponents. The W/L record, which determines post-season qualification and seeding, is insanely dependent on divisional strength.

Eric - not sure if you're aware, but they're getting rid of the unbalanced division heavy schedules next year. Everyone will get one series against every interleague opponent.

I personally have been on board with the east/west idea since the expanded playoffs came out. Division winners get a bye into the playoffs and the next 4 best teams fight it out for the wild card. You should then add 2 more teams to make it fair and balanced at 8 teams per division, which would also align with MLBs future goals of expansion.
