... and Pedroia slides into a force out at home. What an idiot.

You'd rather he try to run through the catcher?

... and Pedroia slides into a force out at home. What an idiot. What? It wasn't a good slide, but he needed to slide nonetheless. Calling him an idiot just makes you look bad. Buch looking so filthy - It's really exciting to watch him pitch like he's capable of. He's not facing a premier offense but still, he looks great. And... 9 K's through 5!

So when does a pitching performance like this get officially Interesting ... another inning? After 7? Thru five so far.

Regardless of how this one ends, these 5 innings were as brilliantly pitched as anything I remember seeing.
Hats off Clay.

It's worth mentioning that Clay has 10 walks now through 20 innings on the season. As well as he's pitched through 2-plus starts, that's a number that will have to go down.

I think his control has been pretty good today, but he is trying to paint the corners and getting squeezed on the calls Both guys have dealt with a relatively small strike zone today, so that's a fair point. But he still had 6 walks in 14 innings coming into the game. That's not a dangerously high number or anything - I just think it will (obviously) have to come down a little bit if he's to sustain a similar level of success going forward.

I agree, great to see the strikeouts up but something has to give with these walks. Scary amount of leadoff walks on top of that. He needs to be able to challenge low in the zone more consistently, especially pitching with a 4 run lead.

99 pitches through 7 innings-- not ideal, but not prohibitive, either.

That 9-pitch 7th inning was very helpful ...

How does Jamey Wright keep getting opportunities in MLB. He has had the longest sub-par career of baseball I have ever seen. 17 years of below average performance. I guess I should be happy to see him on the Rays this year.

A few baserunning blunders in the last few innings. Could do without those.

That cheer Buchholz just got was nice though.

Good pitching by both guys with a small strike zone. No high strikes and next to nothing on the corners. Some good pitchers would have been shelled today.

Good outing by Clay however with the Rays lineup as currently constituted it makes a good pitcher significantly better.
PS- interesting timing on the news of Haneahan injuring his hamstring which appears to be code word for take four or five days off to get your sh$t together while Bailey fills in the closer role. If Bailey continues to pitch as well as he has been it could mean that Hanrahan may be relegated to mop up duty soon.

The Rays are gonna get no-hit/perfect gamed or near no-hit/perfect gamed A LOT this season but nice game by Buchh continuing to turn a corner and become an ace.

Yeah, the Rays ain't the 2003 Red Sox, that's for sure ... but Buchholz was nasty today, worked with all of his pitches. If what we're seeing from Lester and Buchholz is for real, then this team is very much for real.
Meanwhile, can we all admit that Jackie Bradley, Jr wasn't close to being ready? That said, we all made much too big a deal over that decision. I think it would've been better to keep Sweeney, but it's not a big deal, and JBJ contributed in the first week. Now he can go back, get his 20 days so the Sox don't lose their year of service time, and everyone's happy.

You'd rather he try to run through the catcher? That would have been terribly impractical - the catcher was standing 3 feet in front of the plate, stretching for the throw like a first baseman.
