So many SS I guess if you load up on a position that’s the one to do it with Well if I had to choose only one, it'd be pitcher but yeah I know what you mean. Especially for HS guys who sometimes end up there by default as the most athletic guys on their team.

Getting major Middlebrooks vibes here, especially the throwing motion and swing path (I think he was committed to Texas A&M though), but there are so many parallels

Prospects Live Ranking and analysis 74 - Cutter Coffey, RHP Liberty Bakersfield, CA
Coffey is an extremely sure-handed middle-infielder with very soft hands, rhythmic tempo and a solid feel for the position. It's a shorter arm action that might force the profile the second, but his arm strength would be well above average for the position; it's plus. Coffee is also an intriguing pitching prospect up to 93 mph with nast arm--side run and, at it's best, a hellish slider with big two-plane break. At the plate, Coffey has a line-drive oriented swing with a line-to-line and solid fundamentals. It's a prototype frame that should tap into more power as he matures. Polished profile.

Are we adding a second FCL team or is he headed down to DSL? Yeah, Yeah, he'll split time with Romero and Ravelo but hopefully not "strictly as a 3rd baseman".

I could see Coffey moving to 3B right away. Vibes seemed different than Romero's. Less Mookie Betts "may have to move off short" and more WMB "no he's definitely moving but he's going to be good at third".

Why not just let him go full Ohtani? Because it's hard enough to develop one MLB skillset and doing two takes time and reps away from each.

In theory, a prospect who has, say, a 30% chance of panning out as a positional player, plus, condiftional on *not* panning out as a positional player, a 20% chance of panning out as a pitcher, would have a 44% chance of panning out overall, so you ought to prefer them to another prospect who has a 40% chance of panning out as a position player or pitcher but no chance to fall back on the other role. Those numbers are completely made up, obviously, but I wonder if something like that logic played into the selection?
ADD: Or a maybe less convoluted way to put it: you get two bites at the apple with one draft pick.

Trey Ball is checking your math.

Why not just let him go full Ohtani? Because it's hard enough to develop one MLB skillset and doing two takes time and reps away from each. Fair enough, but I would like a season or two and see if one skillset develops better than the other. Unless they're totally out on him as a pitcher.

Developing Coffey to be strictly a shortstop? On what grounds?

Developing Coffey to be strictly a shortstop? On what grounds? On the back fields of JetBlue Park.

Developing Coffey to be strictly a shortstop? On what grounds? I'm just going based on what the French press is saying.

Others may not see it but I think he could be the cream of this year's draft class

What does Cutter want to do?
He seems to have leverage in the negotiations, so I would think that his preferences (pitcher vs. positional player; short vs. third) would be very much a consideration as he weighs the offer from the Sox.
