Seems like he's believing the guesses of eating all the money, which to me, doesn't make any sense for SD. Isn't the reason to move him to clear some salary? If they are still paying his salary and the tax associated, what's the point? That would be my question too

My fear: The big brother-little brother, same town narrative for Hosmer and Casas will be all DOB talks about if they’re on the same roster.

I wanted Hosmer for 2018. I recall that he was a great fit for Fenway, and there was talk about him altering his swing to reduce his GB rate.
Best case scenario: Eric Hosmer : 5 years in Petco :: Adrian Beltre : 5 years in Safeco. (That is far more parallel than I thought it would be!)

Meh even if it’s just a free Eric Hosmer it’s still better than what we’ve been rolling out. At least against righties. But he plays the same spot as the positional prospect the team has who's ready, or close, to the majors. It's almost like our DH position is about to be open from next year until forever....huh

Like, imagine he's here on the equivalent of a 3/9 - that would feel fine to me. Platoon partner for Dalbec in the meantime, if he's good he can DH next year, and if he's bad he can get DFA'd or we can pay the rest of his salary and flip him for a lottery ticket. He won't add a lot of thump to the lineup, but he'd at least lengthen it a bit.

I think if San Diego is eating 51% of the deal, the Campusano dream is alive.

Does this make us… buyers?
So confusing.

Guess it depends on what the money comes out to, assuming he gets moved again this off-season because there’s no way he’s sticking around through 2025.

If SD is paying $20 of $39 left, that $19 million for a washed-up, non-hitting player surpasses the $17 million for JBJ (for whom we gave up Renfroe but received Binelas).

That would be my question too My presumption would be that clearing the roster logjam without needing to attach a prospect has some value, and the potential damage to clubhouse morale is probably at its lowest now given the likely positive impact of acquiring Soto.

I feel that SD still has to send a prospect over in this trade, but they're probably eating enough money so it won't be somebody too exciting. Someone in that nice 25-40 range.

Hosmer has an 81 wRC+ since May 1st. Dalbec is at 97.
I'm about a thousand times more interested to see if Dalbec can go on a hot streak than I am in seeing Hosmer... do what he's done for the last half decade.

Didn't notice this, but sure enough, Hosmer has an extreme reverse L/R split:

Is it just me or do they arrivals of Pham and Hosmer seem like great moves if it was February?

They are both terrible and neither one gets this team any closer to contending. Just brutal.

Could Dalbec perhaps be attached to a veteran on the block (JD?) such that getting an at least vaguely Major League-caliber first baseman was a necessity?
Edit: I see that Red Sox Stats floated a similar idea. I'd definitely be behind selling Dalbec off given that I can't imagine he's in the long-term plans at this point.

Let’s see Bloom make sense of this jambalaya roster construction.

Maybe SD wants Franchy back now that the Sox have fixed him?

Why u starting on May 1st tho It's a random start date - I didn't know what Hosmer's number would be before I looked it up - but it removes the wonky first few weeks of the season following the short spring training.
Projections have Dalbec at basically a 100 wRC+ the rest of the season and Hosmer at like 105. Still much more interested in Dalbec's upside, especially with the way he's been pulling the ball recently.
