Lol @ complaining about getting a free upgrade at 1B (And blah blah blah yes he’s an upgrade, show me which 1B on the Sox has a positive WAR, or an OPS+ above 100) It’s a nothing burger of a trade. Helps them mildly. Doesn’t cost them anything at all so to be pissy about it is baffling. Less Franchy at 1B is a good thing. Don't forget that you're really subtracting from DH when the Sox trade JDM later presumably though. JD is also hitting .222 since the start of June, including a recent 0-23 stretch. He's good, but I'm expecting the return for him to be, whether it helps this year or in the coming years, to be worth a lot more than he will be.
Edit: wRC+ by month:
June: 98 July: 62 August (one game; irrelevant): 34

The Padres were willing to include Gore in the trade that included Hosmer with the Nationals. Why can't the Sox just jump in and get Gore? I'll wait to see what comes out, but this is my main question. Gore is going to the Nats my guy. We don't know full deal without Hosmer yet, I think.

Telling on yourself if you're complaining about a deal while having no clue what the deal is.

Meh. Some competency and a 130 WRC+ against LHP to help ease Casas in isn't awful. If SD is eating most/all of the deal idk how you can really have a strong reaction either way here.

Taking a dip at catcher but upgrading at first base. Affordable bridge to Casas that has a personal relationship with the kid. I don't see the downside. They are bridging to the future but not completely punting on 2022. What's the beef?

Seems like he's believing the guesses of eating all the money, which to me, doesn't make any sense for SD. Isn't the reason to move him to clear some salary? If they are still paying his salary and the tax associated, what's the point? That would be my question too Well, he did throw a stink bomb into the Soto quest. That probably makes him persona non grata in SD. So maybe this is a stench dump instead of a salary dump.

Until we know how much money the Padres are eating and whether any prospects are part of this deal (in either direction), it seems impossible to have a full reasoned take on it.

We don't know all of the numbers on how much SD is picking up except its a good amount. That could be 10 million or 8 million. We don't know. Unless its the total contract, why couldn't Bloom have received a prospect from taking on the remainder of that deal? Hosmer has zero value. He's obviously better than Franchy and Dalbec but why not just call up Casas who is now healthy? It just makes zero sense unless SD is paying the entire deal or they're sending a prospect. If they don't do either then Bloom got taken. You act like he’s a nobody he starts on almost every big league team at 13 million a year… You gave up nothing to get this guy and ur complaining it hurts us? If Casas ends up ready next year you trade him like you can’t lose

Somewhere between plurality and super-majority!

I don't get people saying he's going to take up a roster spot for the next 3 years. Considering the Padres are eating a "majority" of the contract that'll be at least half probably more. At 6.5 million or less for the next 3 years they'll very easily be able to either eat a little more money and ship him somewhere for a lotto ticket or just eat the money themselves. It is highly unlikely Hosmer is on the Red Sox for the next 3 seasons and honestly if he is then that's good news because that means he has a revitalization of sorts and is a cheap productive player. The downside is basically non-existent and he's a good bridge to allow Casas more time to season himself in the minors.

It’s not like we owe him real money. To complain about this is insane. It’s a zero-lose proposition, even if he comes in here and sucks. If he sucks it’s just the status quo at 1B!

Hosmer a 19 WAR player for his career. Thought it was somewhat higher. Like closer to 30.

Nope, reports say "the majority," which is literally at least half and is a word often used when it's a lot more than half. So would you consider the majority of a 13 million dollar salary to be 8 or 10 million a year? Does timing of the retained salary matter? For example, could the Pads concerning all of his salary this year to get us under the penalty, but we pay more in the out years where we are prepared to exceed the cap?

Missed opportunity to grab a prospect. Again, if this guy was a rental it's not a big deal. The fact you couldn't get a prospect back with this guy is very disappointing. This is a player we all joked about getting with Gore or whoever on a yearly basis to take on the deal. Now we're cool with just getting the player and having SD pick up most of the salary. Just play Casas if thats the case.

The big takeaway here is that announcing that the Red Sox are getting Hosmer without immediately explaining the terms was a great way to drive lots of people insane.

Hosmer a 19 WAR player for his career. Thought it was somewhat higher. Like closer to 30. Only 10 in real WAR (fangraphs).
