Is there a reason Whitlock is not pitching the 9th?

As rough as the season has been - as awful as the pen has been - Schreiber has been just other wordly, unexpected - so refreshing in his aggressive approach.

Is there a reason Whitlock is not pitching the 9th? Because he usually needs 2 days of recovery after pitching his longer stints. One of the reasons why I think he'll ultimately be more useful as a starter. Can't really pitch him on consecutive days.

We won a series against the AL East!!!! Let's now make it two in a row! Also, since June 1st, the best team in the AL East has been Baltimore.

we don't need Hosmer to be a hero, just a solid regular at this price. Real hopeful. The Red Sox need power from someone and most of Pham’s hits have been 2B or HRs. I could see Bloom exercise the option for 2023.

It’s a no-brainer to exercise at this point imo Seems to play well in the market (so far), already adding some thump, have nobody in the high minors to fill his spot next year so there’s no blocking of any prospects

Not looking to rehash how they acquired Winckowski but I would say in my opinion the Red Sox have sent out worse 5/6th starters in the last few years. He's solid enough that I'm glad they have him. Could they upgrade from him pretty easily? Most certainly but he's a valuable player to have. Not sure if it is correct but the site shows him with 3 options left? I'd figure he has 2 since he's been in the minors this year?
I also would have to think he may be a relatively appealing trade piece to a team looking for a young cost controlled pitcher who would probably do better in a division that has larger ballparks and isn't as strong as the AL East.

He’s on the older side and it’s not like he’s had a great year, I don’t see his market being more robust than it was last offseason where he settled for his current deal. Maybe he can get to free agency and negotiate the exact same contract, essentially pushing back the option a year

He’s on the older side and it’s not like he’s had a great year, I don’t see his market being more robust than it was last offseason where he settled for his current deal. Maybe he can get to free agency and negotiate the exact same contract, essentially pushing back the option a year I just don't think it's likely for a mutual option to work out unless the buyout is extremely large (i.e. the luxury tax hit is low compared to the actual dollars paid). Here's the formula that would result in Pham staying: - Pham would have to think he was worth $6 million or less next year
- Bloom would have to think Pham was worth $4.5 million or more next year (I'm assuming a $4.5 million LT hit for 2023 since it's a $1.5 million buyout on a $6 million option)
- Pham would have to think he couldn't get a multi-year deal as a free agent, or that any potential multi-year deal would have an AAV much lower than $6 million
- Pham would either need to want to stay in Boston or not think another team would give him a ~1/6 deal
I think the odds of all of that lining up are slim. Definitely not impossible, but I'm assuming it's not happening and will be pleasantly surprised if I hear otherwise.
