They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

May be our best chance to win a series against the AL East all year. Get it done, Winck!

McGuire + Pham + Hosmer: +0.4 WAR with the Red Sox Benintendi + Montas + Effross: -0.3 WAR with the Yankees Vazquez: -0.2 WAR with the Astros with just 12 PAs Yeah, that’s bad. It’ll make those teams a bit worse to watch when the Red Sox are flipping around during the playoffs. I’m not sure how watching the success especially of Pham — who people on this board were calling for as an off-season signing — doesn’t make us feel *worse* about this season. Imagine Pham all year? Imagine a Hosmer-type 1b? I suspect the 5 game gap would be gone.

Admittedly, that is 2.3 more than JBJ, Shaw, and Franchy combined for, but still doesn't make up a 5 game gap.
Anyway, the point of the statistical comparison was to laugh at the Yankees, not to be all sad about stuff.

Do you read every post and say “how can I twist this negatively?” Pham’s been great so far, but he wasn’t single handedly changing the season. We have Hosmer and McGuire at basically the minimum for the next two seasons. All this post should do is make you happier about how the trade deadline went. It’s okay to admit some things went well while still being critical overall.

True, but I suspect both would do better with a season in Fenway. I think Hosmer will likely have a good year next year. I am looking forward to him getting a full(ish?) season, depending on when Casas arrives and what they do with him. I’d consider keeping Pham, too, especially if OF options are bleak. Pham appears to love the CF bleachers.

With Baltimore tied with Tampa, I'm not going to be upset if we lose this one. I'd love for Baltimore to make the playoffs.

It's strange to me that Plawecki is still playing so much. Don't understand that at all.

Wow ..23 blown saves for Sox vs 10 for the Os. Pretty shocking. That's kind of how they're winning games. At this point, other than their young catcher, they're not really better, except that their anonymous bullpen keeps them in games and protects leads. The Sox bullpen has been lousy most of the year and giving away games. That's the unexpected difference between the 2 teams. Despite that, the O's are still doubling down on their future rather than hoping to sneak into the playoffs which they might do anyways if Tampa falters.

The Orioles might add like $150 million in payroll this offseason.
Can we get out of this division somehow

As a mood lightening aside:
Anyone else feel targeted by MLB? I’ve seen the pubic hair commercial on mlb.tv so much I am starting to wonder if Red Sox fans have known grooming issues they are trying to politely hint at.

It's a bit of an enigma, the whole Vazquez thing. If he was worth so little to the Astros as to be a backup catcher, why did they give up two prospects for him? Are the prospects really that bad? If that's the case then why was Vazquez worth so little to Boston? But the Red Sox picked up his mildly pricey option for this year, and then he proceeded to have one of his best offensive seasons.
I wish Speier (or another quality Boston sports journalist, if there is one) would explain this out. Is Vazquez terrible according to some opaque metric, like game-calling ability or something?
Whatever the case, I feel a little bad for the guy. He left Boston against his will, and it would be one thing if he were to join a legit World Series contender, but to be demoted in the process is a bummer.

The Astros have a bye locked up and are only playing for potential home field vs the Yankees. They might care very little about their games at this point. Maybe Vazquez has a minor injury or something that he'd normally be playing through. I'd be surprised if Maldonado is the starter in the playoffs.
