Can't say I'm too surprised that Eovaldi declined the QO. Seems like he's a pretty sure thing to get something like 3 years 45+ Mil which at his age and injury history would seem a better move for him. If Tyler Anderson got 3/39 then Nate is definitely getting at least 3/45. I can't see Bloom matching that. Yep, if Anderson with the QO attached is getting that type of deal I'm getting a little worried about the money that is going to be tossed around this offseason. I'd say Nate gets closer to 18-20 AAV than 15 if I had to guess.

Huh. Well, I guess offering the QO was the right call. I thought there was a pretty good argument for him to take it - he could get a nice little raise for this year, aim for a bounce back year, then try to score a contract next year without the burden of the QO. But I don't hate that it turned out this way. Yep, the benefits of being buyers and seller, i.e., only partially pregnant.

So the Sox kept Eovaldi and will get a draft pick, but they'll get a lesser pick because they were over the luxury tax threshold. Versus trading him for some value, maybe more value than this pick. Maybe the Sox were just hoping he'd take the QO. Regardless, going over the cap at the trade deadline looks even worse now than it did back then. And it looked pretty bad back then.

Didn’t they go over the CBT threshold in the offseason? They just didn’t dip back under it at the deadline?

I have a QO question that’s probably been addressed here before but there are too many posts for me to sift through it - if the Sox lose a guy that declined the QO and sign a guy who was offered one (so let’s say they lose X but re-sign Eovaldi and then sign Judge) do the penalties and benefits cancel out? Or how does that work?

Yeah to real hardcore fans it was obvious but they they still had a 30% chance at the playoffs at the time of the deadline iirc- tough to punt on that in this market. I’d imagine they wanted to keep the stands full for as long as possible They didn’t make the decision to go over at the deadline though. They made that decision way sooner- when they actually went over. I don’t think we need to rehash this argument though, it’s old at this point

That’s not really a good chance, especially considering they would’ve had to get past Houston, one of the most dominant teams of the last few years.
Anyway, yeah I guess the point has been made about the cap, but considering the team had multiple offers for Eovaldi, the decision not to trade him will really not age well if he leaves. Particularly in the context of the other moves that were made. To the point I am not sure Bloom survives another year managing the cap and roster this way.
Point taken though. I’ll step back and read/listen on this subject from this point forward since I think I’ve made my argument.

The Phillies weren't that much better than the Sox around the time of the deadline, and they had the Dodgers in the league, arguably the most dominant team of the last few years. Do you think they regret not selling at the deadline?

Do you think they regret not selling at the deadline? I am sick of this comparison for a few reasons: A) The phillies *were* much better. After a slow start, they gad a very good record. B) Unlike the Sox, they were designed to be good in a short series. They had a dominant player in Harper, who went off, and they had two really tough starters in Wheeler and Nola who immediately jade them competitive in four games out of seven. The comparison is just not a good one. It is also not one that justifies the “just get in” approach to the playoffs. Some teams are better built for the playoffs than a long season… those are teams that should sell out for a WC. Some teams are built to squeak out a WC but will be in sad shape in a 5 - or 7-game series.
