Yes, Wright will be the first one to be optioned when a pitcher is healthy, followed by Wilson, who at least is actually a reliever. I could see someone like Hassan going on the 60-day soon to make room on the 40, which is a cluttered mess right now with all the guys on it that can't help yet. Chris, I'm not so sure I agree, but even if so, what alternative moves would you have made? Maybe protecting Pressley vs Hassan, but bullpen depth isn't this teams issue. It's less about guys "clogging" the 40 than it is about who did they block from being added that could truly help this team? There are only 4 guys on the 40man that I would classify as not being able to help the major league team: 1. Hassan 2. Butler 3. Vasquez 4. Britton The team is fairly well covered where needed, if an injury replacement is needed. I suppose you could say they are a little thin in the OF with only Bradley being the main option, but again what were your alternatives? Sweeney? Maier? he's still in the system. You can always very easily DFA Hassan or Butler at any time with little risk of losing them and even if you did, who really cares. Really, just curious as to what you think should have been done differently.. They already had to lose Mauro Gomez to add Bradley. It's not a huge loss, and they were deep enough anyway, especially after signing Snyder, but my point is more that they're already cutting guys to put players on the roster. I personally would have protected Fields instead of Hassan. Although I get why they didn't protect Fields and don't consider him an enormous loss, the fact that Wright is the guy they called up when Hanrahan went down says something about who is on the 40. It would have been nice to bring Fields up and be able to use him in the middle innings with Wilson, rather than calling up Wright, getting him off his routine, and having to worry about bringing in a knuckleballer from the bullpen. There's a logjam of no-option RPs, but that's at the expense of RP's with options. Wilson is literally the only one right now. EDIT: And please note that I'm not saying this is a disaster or anything. They've got three RPs on the DL, the closer and 2 LHP, and still have a great bullpen. That says something about the depth they built up. My point is more that there's some dead weight. Also, Butler will probably not be the first C called up. Lavarnway's getting 60% of the playing time in Pawtucket, and he's not DH'ing at all, which is interesting. Butler's hitting last when he plays and not hitting well, while Lavarnway's line is pretty good.

As for whether it's Butler or Lavarnway that gets the first call if a catcher goes down, I think it depends on who gets hurt. If it's Ross, they want to replace him with a defensively minded catcher, if it's Salty, probably more likely that Lavarnway gets the call

Sox gonna wear home whites with BOSTON across the front. Not Red Sox. twitpic.com/cko41qPapi is back and batting cleanup. Ellsbury - CF Victorino - RF Pedroia - 2B Ortiz - DH Napoli - 1B Nava - LF WMB - 3b Drew - SS Ross - C Buchholz on the hill.

Middlebrooks should try not swinging at pitches in the dirt.

Man, Middlebrooks looks horrible. No approach at the plate besides hacking at literally everything. He said yesterday he was beating himself, and he's certainly right. Ciriaco wouldn't swing at some of the pitches WMB's going for. Hope he gets out of the funk soon. 2 for his last 31.

Yeah that AB by Middlebrooks was one of the worst AB's by him I have every seen. He HAS to work on his plate discipline or he will never break out of his sophomore slump.

Ortiz getting the offense started with the first hit of the day. Maybe he can jump start the offense a bit, it has been carried by the pitching staff for the most part this year.

Take a pitch, Will.
He's killing this offense right now.

Yeah that AB by Middlebrooks was one of the worst AB's by him I have every seen. He HAS to work on his plate discipline or he will never break out of his sophomore slump. Yup, his second AB wasn't any better. Two very poor swing and misses, followed by a double play grounder two short. Kinda wish he just struck out again. Maybe to start, someone could tell him to just take a pitch. Literally, just don't swing the bat for once. Sounds simple but he looks like he can't keep the bat on his shoulders. At least with Papi back, we can stash him in the bottom third of the lineup instead of relying on him as a middle of the order run producer. But I'm not trying to dismiss his talent -- he really has the ability to be a big run producer -- but he really needs to take a step back for now and re-evaluate his approach. Unrelated: I can't wait to see Drew heat up at the plate. I think he has a real good approach for a SS, and we'll start to see him hit a few more balls on a line. His defense so far has been terrific, and he looks like he has just about as much range as he did years ago before the devastating ankle injury.

I hate the sacrifice bunt with no outs. Not a smart play.

Yeah, I have to say, Farrell's "aggressive" philosophy is only exciting and fun when the team is winning. When it isn't working, all the running into outs and sacrificing becomes pretty obnoxious pretty quickly.

Terrible job by Clay there. You have to get out the inning.

That's a little harsh. He worked around leadoff doubles in the 5th and 6th innings and almost did it again in the 7th, but that's a thin line to walk. Plus, his overall line isn't bad-- 7 innings, 6 strikeouts/no walks, only two runs is pretty impressive, even against a mediocre Kansas City offense.

I wouldn't go too hard on Clay for that. KC's been hitting to the very corners of the OF for their XBH's, and Perez really reached out for that triple. Not like Buch made some big mistake.
Finally a hit for WMB!

OK, that's another reason why bunting sucks. Perez is an unbelievable catcher though.

Well the time to give up a HR in the 9th is to lead off the inning with a 2 run lead. Missed the FB up and in and Cain just crushed that

Nava's HR's are just more fun to watch. It is just so heartwarming to see that guy succeed. He is damm easy to root for.

A win's a win, even if Bailey made it interesting. Plus, the bullpen is in great shape for tomorrow's doubleheader!

The Sox are finding ways to win games this year that they found ways to lose last year. Lot more fun this way.
