Oh please, he's about to find himself and become an electric left hander... well, that's been the case for the last 7 years. Randy Johnson!

If you aren't going to pinch hit Oritz for three clearly inferior hitters down by 1, when will you pinch it him? Oritz is so much better than Salty, Middlebrooks, and Carp that Farrell should forfeit his game check check for letting them hit. Soooooo stupid.

Tonight was managing incompetence at its finest - horrible steal attempts, Andrew Miller pitching the 10th inning somehow, Ortiz not getting an at-bat in extras.
Farrell should get blasted in his postgame press conference.

Farrell's got his quirks with base running and bullpen management, no doubt about that. It's not a Farrell thing, it's an industry thing. A large majority of active managers would do exactly the same thing. Ron Washington threw away a World Series ring doing the same thing and kept his job. Your ninth inning guy pitches in the ninth. Autopilot, no active brain cells required. I dunno man. Maybe not Ron Washington, but I bet 2/3 of the managers run Mortensen back out there for the 9th after a 13 pitch perfect inning in the first game of a doubleheader in a game that he's losing. Farrell is Girardi-esque in tying himself to relievers for one inning only. It's early in the season and just one game and all that, but tonight was a really frustrating one to take I have to say.

If WMB continues his struggles, any chance he could be back in Pawtucket? He still has two options left and he clearly needs some serious help on his plate discipline. If he had Daniel Nava's plate discipline, WMB would be one of the best 3B in the game. Btw, that last AB by him was good until he struck out, running the count full.
Never put in Miller in a game AT ALL unless he is facing only lefties. Farrell is great, but I don't always like his choice of relievers. When are Morales and Breslow back?

Not necessarily though. Washington is as bad as it gets when it comes to tactical managing. Many other managers would have Bailey back out there.Unfortunately, nearly all of them managed 20 or more years ago.

Farrell should get blasted in his postgame press conference. Pretty much. The game was thrown away. It's unfortunate Koji gave up that bomb, but he was due to let up a measly run sooner or alter. Miller is so frustrating. He's actually sitting alone in the dugout right now, with everyone already in the clubhouse. Feel for the guy, but he has been so unreliable this year.

Today hurt a bit. I am concerned with Middlebrooks. He seems like he is trying to bust out of this slump with each pitch and is just digging a deeper hole.

Webster's curve was great tonight. I missed a bit of the game , but didn't see him hang one.
This is the first game this year I think the sox lost that they should have won.
The at bat that Miller walked the go ahead run in not one pitch was close.
On Nava, he was a good story, now he's a good ball player. Improves every year.

You're forgetting Hanrahan's meltdown against Baltimore. 5-3 lead headed to the 9th and gives up a 5 spot. I don't want to see Miller throw a meaningful pitch for the Sox. He'd be all right for a long guy if they stretch him out. Just don't want him in a high-leverage situation. Control is still pathetic.

Well, there was that game than Hanrahan gave up 5 runs in the 9th. And they should've won the day game with all the men they left in scoring position. Just ugly. Middlebrooks, Salty, Drew, and Ross are completely ineffective right now at the plate. Ciriaco I won't include as he's just a utility INF, but after the first 4 or so batters this is a poor offensive team right now.

Hey, does anyone want to make fun of me for my concern over Middlebrook's K/BB numbers? I offer that now is the time for you to bring that up.

The weaknesses in this year's Sox team are beginning to show themselves. The bottom half of the order sucks. The pitching is terrific, except there are a couple of RPs who probably should be gone.
I didn't see the games today, but I went through Webster's pitches on Gameday. Very impressive. In one sequence there was a 20 MPH difference between two pitches. He should stick with the team.

The bottom third of this lineup is just not very good. Neither Middlebrooks nor salty are going to walk enough, but have enough potentual power to stick as 7-8 hitters. I think we can expect some improvement from some of the top of the order hitters. First, Ortiz will improve the lineup by his presence, if healthy. Also, I expect Napoli and Ellsbury to improve their OBPs. Third, Pedroia will probably start hitting for power at some point (though he will also probably walk less). Those improvements will likely be offset some by Nava coming back to earth to some extent.

1st bad series of the season. We'll pick ourselves back up. Agreed. The nightcap was a really bad loss, but there's a bit of overreaction going on here. The Red Sox have the same flaws they did 24 hours ago, they just cost them games finally. If Middlebrooks hasn't made an adjustment in another 100 at-bats or so, then it's time to panic. He's a young hitter who pitchers have gotten the book on. Developing players takes time, it's not a linear process.

Re: fifth outfielder, Mitch Maier might fit the bill if they needed a guy. He apparently really impressed them in camp, can play all three outfield spots, and has been quite good in Pawtucket since getting activated. That said, no idea how they'd get him on the 40-man. My guess is that if they need a RF short-term (think 15-day DL), Brentz might be the guy. Long-term (can send a guy to the 60-day), then it'd be Maier. Bryce Brentz? Tie up another roster spot for the year with a guy whose calling card is a 25% K rate? If you need a guy for 15 days, it's Bradley or Hassan, or use a guy like Maier who you can promote and waive later if required. For some reason I thought Brentz was on the 40. Brain fart. Agree it's Bradley. Hassan's gotta get healthy before he's an option (he's approaching 60-day DL territory actually).
