The vast majority of the projected WooSox are either on the 40-man or received invites to camp. Not unexpected with, per Cotillo, 10-12 guys expected to play in the WBC.
Of note, he reports Casas will likely NOT play for PR.

Between injuries from ramping up too quickly to actually seeing players in person, I would rather that the WBC did not exist. (Written like a selfish Red Sox fan…. ) |

It goes without saying but I'm going to say it anyway this sox team is intriguing. We know Houck can throw a ball and we think we know Yoshida can hit soft toss balls anywhere but dang let's go 2023 red sox. I'm starting to get myself amped up.

I'm amped up as well. My thought is that no team has rebuilt for the new rules like the Sox have.
No projection system, as currently constructed, takes that into consideration. It's pretty much just ignored.

I heard the lads speculating on the latest pod about Connor Wong taking reps at 2B this spring in case they need emergency help up the middle in April before Mondesi gets back. Yet, while mentioning Duran as OF depth, they didn't speculate about him getting reps at 2B in Ft. Myers. I'm here to say that Duran will get more reps at 2B than Wong. For one thing, getting Wong hurt playing second in spring training would be criminally irresponsible, especially considering the lack of depth at C (and Alfaro expected to play in the WBC). Duran getting injured playing 2B would be less dire. Also, two things that can both be true are that 1) the Sox tried Duran at CF to try to increase his value, both to the team and in general, and 2) they still think he can play a passable 2B. Obviously #1 didn't work out like they planned but it doesn't mean that door #2 is locked shut. They seem to embrace versatility in every player on the roster, why not Jarren? I suspect they haven't moved him back to 2B before because they didn't want him (or the rest of the league) to think they were giving up on him in CF. That horse is out of the barn at this point and I would posit that showcasing his versatility will be the new attempt at boosting his value.

Won't give anything away on rotation. Wants to break up Yoshida/Devers in the lineup. Pushed back on Kiké's comments on last year's clubhouse culture. Mondesi looking good. Plan is for Story to eventually be the SS.

Depends which Hernandez shows up this year but I suppose you could say that with much of the lineup. If Hernandez plays closer to his 2nd half 2021 season then Hernandez/Yoshida/Turner/Devers makes a lot of sense. If he's closer to the guy we saw last year then I don't want to see him anywhere near the top of the lineup and yes I know he was hurt but just saying. Can Verdugo be closer to his 2021 slash of .289/.351/.426? That wouldn't be a bad two hole hitter either. Yoshida/Verdugo/Turner/Rafi doesn't sound bad either going off Cora's comments that he wants to split Yoshida and Rafi. If Verdugo can regain his 2021 form I'd honestly consider him for the leadoff spot, but I am still pretty unfamiliar with total lineup optimization Definitely looks like he leaned out to recapture some of the athleticism he lost bulking |

great to see the leadership out front and taking questions. Wish I was there, last time I was at Spring Training was probably 2003, i think. Not at the new venue, the City of Palms Park. Had some fun times there and at Fort Myers Beach, which always had talent in it's own right.  excitement for the season starting to build up. cautiously optimistic that things may go well, but ready for the journey in any event. Go Sox ! |

Agree. What a pleasant old times feel to that park, and the small town feel back then. In the late 60’s my life’s goal was to open a fishing supply store by the bridge. My little boat was called Mellow Yellow. Great snook fishing, shrimper’s bars, Sanibel was empty and beautiful. You will want to read Pete Abe’s recent piece on the aftermath of hurricane Ian in the Fort and Beach. Very sad.

There are efforts to revive the tourist economy but its going to be a stretch along that part of the coast. Those islands have been reworked over and over again by storms for eons. There's uncertainty now about the changing frequency of those disruptions. Investment money will be harder to come by.

FYI: On that milb.tv note, if you are a past subscriber to it and plan to get mlb.tv, you may want to make sure your milb.tv subscription isn't set to auto-renew. Mine is and I got an email today saying it will auto-renew unless I opt out, even though I've gotten mlb.tv in the past as well.

The above notes on the changes to the MLB packages refer to an app. I don't own a cell phone and only use a computer. No apps. I also didn't get the above mentioned email from MLB, so, I'm assuming that the MLB package only relates to cell phones and that I will have to continue subscribing to both to get the discounted price on MiLB.. Does that make sense to you ? ADD: The MiLB email also says I need to enter a promo code that comes with the MLB renewal to renew MiLB for 2024. |
