Giants fired Gabe Kapler. Woah, that’s a bit of a surprise. If the Sox want to move on from Cora I think he should be the first guy they call

Rodon gives up 8 runs without recording an out for the Yankees tonight.
His stuff, both in terms of velo and metrics like Stuff+, have largely been similar to last year. But instead of a 33% K rate he’s at 23% K rate before tonight.
Maybe he needs an off-season to get right but… this was a 14 start/2-3 month sample, not like just a bad week or two.

When the Sox played them, he looked like he had good stuff.

Wow, so Cashman signed a guy to a huge contract that will be an albatross around his team's neck for the next five years? How strange...

But his elbow might still explode on top of everything.

Congrats, MLB!
Due to your brilliant playoff design ...
The #2 wild card team in the AL is due to face a 102-103 win team (when adjusting for division strength), and if they advance, a 105-106 team.
The #3 wild card faces an 83-win team, and when they advance, an 88-89 win team.
The incentive for the Rays to to lose tomorrow is immense. And the same is true of the Astros, who can keep the 3 seed by also losing. The #3 WC is in fact better than the #1.
Given that there's a 5-win difference between the East and the West, the Astros facing the easier schedule would be criminal.
I hope that both teams try as hard as possible to tank tomorrow and then make a big stink about MLB's incompetence.

I missed that the Astros can win the division if they win and the Rangers lose, as they have the tiebreaker ... so the Astros will be trying to win. The Jays will presumably rest all their regulars, and they deserve the better #3 spot more than the Rangers do.

Boy, Texas really jobbed themselves by blowing the division on the last day. They went from the BYE-TOR/MIN path to the ALCS to the TBR-BAL path. Fangraphs World Series win odds fell from 7.6% to 4.8%. Houston went up from 13.1% to 19.7% which now almost equals the Braves (20.6%).

Rangers have one of the lowest save conversion rates in 40 years. They won't have the luxury of getting 10 run leads off the A's and Angels in October... They better hope they have a healthy Playoff Eovaldi.

Putting this up here without comment beyond we are a system of being innocent until proven guilty.

😧 So I guess nearly a decade of questionable or erratic decisions as Padres GM, including but not exclusive to: trading away Trea Turner for Wil Myers and Max Fried for Justin Upton in his very first offseason; giving Eric Hosmer $144 million dollars; trading away nearly his entire farm system for Juan Soto, and then having apparently no plan on how to financially retain him; handing Xander 280 million dollars until he’s 41 because Trea Turner and Aaron Judge told you no; pushing out of one of the most respected managers in baseball in Bob Melvin; overseeing one of the disappointing teams in the last decade this year… I guess all those weren’t enough to get him fired?

I never comment on things like this because I choose to reserve judgment until guilt or innocence is proven; all I will say is that in cases like this, the accused if guilty, deserve to have the book thrown at them, and the accuser, if proven to have lied, deserve the same punishment the accused would have otherwise undergone.

When the Rays got Glasnow, they turned his career around by telling him to aim for the middle of the zone on every single pitch.

When the Rays got Glasnow, they turned his career around by telling him to aim for the middle of the zone on every single pitch. Years ago I read a Fangraphs piece talking about exactly this. They found that the best pitchers actually throw more pitches in the middle of the zone, which makes sense once you think about it for a minute: the best pitchers are the ones who can live in the zone with stuff so good that it doesn’t matter if it’s down the middle.

Sandy Alcantara TJS
Threw a lot of pitches in August, went to the IL on September 6th with a flexor strain, pulled from September 21st rehab start and now goes under the knife

I wonder if teams have just decided that surgeons are good enough at reconstructing elbows that they just don’t care that the things they teach these guys are going to cause their arms to blow up. If that’s the case you’d think that megacontracts for pitchers are only going to become rarer as teams build the assumption that a guy will be out for (at least) a year into their offers.
