I'm just surprised he had to go to the MLB for a loan. Couldn't he have borrowed $50 mil from deeper pockets like Xander or Manny?

MLB gave the Padres 80% of what Diamond Sports was supposed to give them
People have been whispering that owner Peter Seidler is near death, which would explain the team's behavior

I wrote about Sinclair's gamble, how they isolated themselves from financial liability, and how Diamond aka Bally Sports was likely facing bankruptcy. That was clear before the season started.
Relying on cable revenues is no longer a viable business model. Money is also more expensive and lenders much more cautious. So they wanted teams to gift them streaming rights. Understandably, MLB wasn't about to allow that for a highly leveraged entity on the financial ropes.
All of that should have informed the decision making process for player compensation in San Diego. Instead, what actually went down probably did reflect a desire to get the owner a championship. That was a losing proposition and this is going to be difficult to unwind, for the roster, the team and maybe even for the city.
