They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Joe Ryan looks like he might have gotten really good

This seems like a big test. The Sox need a miracle to win the East outright, so in a sense the Twins will be one of their biggest rivals for a WC. They need to beat teams like the Twins and Guardians then squeak by a few East teams.

Good time to catch Sonny. He's due for regression.

Christian Arroyo is 192 out of 192 in xwOBA. He is hitting .160/.192/.200 and xwOBA thinks he's been a little bit lucky.

Christian Arroyo is 192 out of 192 in xwOBA. I’m begging for Mondesi to be ready when his IL stint is up.

Now that’s a lineup I kinda like, that may be their best possible one at the moment

Why Wong over McGuire against a righty?
I wonder if they just really love Wong behind the plate.

They're facing a righty tomorrow and the 3rd game is still TBD but perhaps they think it's likely to be a righty that game too and want to get McGuire a day off, just spit balling there though.

McGuire might be banged up, or maybe Sale is exercising his 10/5 rights to determine who will be catching his starts.

As others have said perhaps he's a little banged up right now.

Wonder if it has anything to do with Wong being the only catcher to throw anyone out after everyone was running wild on them early? For the record, I hold the pitchers as accountable for that, seems like no one is really trying to vary their pace within the constraints of the clock, which is leading to some ugly jumps. Reese: 6% CS Wong 67% CS

Reese: 6% CS Wong 67% CS Just to this point, since I did want to come back to the returns on the questions asked during the first series - the Orioles are currently first in the league in steals per game, and have twice as many total steals as the average team (by median). That's not to say that controlling the running game isn't an issue for the Sox, but I think it was also just as much if not moreso a case of opening the season against a team making it a point of emphasis to run.

True, and the Sox have allowed a lot of baserunners, you can't steal a base if you can't get on base.

I think Wong call a better game back there. I don’t have the Stats to back this up but it seems like it to me

They probably also want to give Wong run against righties to see if he really can be the #1. They like his defense and his offense against lefties, so it's just a question if he can hold his own against righties - gotta find out somehow.

I love Devers in the 3 hole. Switch Wong with McGuire and
Verdugo Turner Devers McGuire Yoshida Casas Kiké Duran Chang
that would be my lineup. Hopefully Coraâs is better!

In my opinion this series is going to be Yoshida's coming out party. He's going to go 7 for 12 with 2hr, 6 RBIs, 4BB, 3 2B, 1K, only 3 groundouts and he's not looking back. Although it's kind of cheating for me to act like this is a prediction. I've been to the future and now I'm back. He does a really cool samurai sword bat flip in the third game, but don't let me ruin it for you.

Maybe Wong is also getting some playing time because he is right handed and the lineup can slant too lefty heavy and leave Cora at a disadvantage later in the game if the lefties are taken out and they still need a LH bat on the bench. That and the fact that he has thrown runners out. I know I was surprised that Wong had more ABs this year than McGuire so far.

Girding myself for Vazquez to slap, oh, a half dozen singles to right in the most annoying moments.
