The 2nd, 4th, and 9th Duval, Wong, and Arroyo struckout for all 3 outs. This is a great observation, but I want to put on the record that despite what the page may say, notstarboard *does not* like this.

Well certainly wasn't pretty and hard to really feel great about it but a W is a W and they need to start stacking them up now if they want to be playing meaningful baseball in the 2nd half so I'll take it.

40-37. If we can take the next two in Chicago and the first two against Miami, we would be exactly on an 88-win pace through the first half. That would be pretty sweet. May it be spoken into existence.

Good thing Bello is good and the White Sox suck.
Crazy lineup choices and some shaky defense but good pitching against a lousy offense.
17 K's from the lineup that us supposed to make contact.
Hopefully the lineup makes more sense the rest of the series.

1.5 GB for wildcard but 4 teams in front of them still. Once again I'll take it gained a game tonight. Need to take at least one of the next 2 vs this bum chisox squad.

They need to clean up on Oakland and Chicago White Sox to finish the all-star break. Tough schedule in between those two teams.

What happened to Tim Anderson!? Good question, I had him as a potential trade target I'd like to see a couple weeks ago figuring he'd snap out of it some point but short of getting him for basically free at this point I no longer have much interest there.

Did any of the Boston media bestir themselves to ask Cora what was up with that lineup? I am very slow to be critical of lineup construction, on the grounds that a) it usually doesn't matter that much, and b) the manager has more information about, e.g., which guys are a little bit hurt, need a rest, are hungover, etc. But this one truly baffled me, and it played out exactly as expected. The best explanation I can come up with is that this was arguably the best defensive alignment they could put out there, but the advantages of Duvall>Duran and Turner>Casas are pretty marginal and, well, we saw what Turner and Duvall did with their bats in this one.
Fortunately Cora managed to leave three lefties in the lineup and they accounted for all three runs. And, thanks to the pitching, that was enough.

1.5 back of the last Wild Card and NYY and HOU currently in skids. Pedal to the metal this weekend then hold on tight for Miami and hope they can steal a couple from them.

They said he injured his shoulder earlier in the season. Probably trying to play through it and getting sub-optimal outcomes.

The lineup last night was far from optimal, not arguing that. But I feel like a lot of criticism of Cora's in-game/lineup decisions here fails to recognize that he has to manage for 162 games. I know we all want to win every night but you have to make decisions that maximize your win total over the course of the season. That includes giving guys rest, giving your bench reps so they stay game ready, or bringing in Ort so you don't have to play extra innings. Sometimes you punt on a "scheduled loss" to set you up better for the rest of the week. And sometimes you steal those games anyways.

Rob Bradford on the pregame said Cora thought Giolito's best pitch was the change up to lefty's.

They said he injured his shoulder earlier in the season. Probably trying to play through it and getting sub-optimal outcomes. He’s always hit a lot of GB just not this much. He also never walks. He really needs everything to go right offensively to be above average. We’ll see where he signs but I don’t like him as a long term bet

Wong playing again, that's seven straight days. He's struck out in each of his last 7 PA.
