I think he's getting promoted to AA to start next season at this rate. The Red Sox OF of 2029 could consist of Roman Anthony, Miguel Bleis, and Nazzan Zanetello, Then they better extend Anthony soon as a 2024 RoY win would put this in jeopardy.

Any objections to the thread title change? All Roads Lead to Roman Anthony.

How nice would it be to hit BIG on a non 1st rounder? I think the thing we all slept on is the $2.5m bonus - clearly THEY thought of him as a first-round talent.

So I'm seeing a fair amount, here and Twitter, of push for Anthony to go to AA. Some things to think about:
Vs. LHP on the year: .125/.326/.156 (it's fairly consistent across levels) - he somehow has just 43 PA against LHP all year too. Also, has a sub-.400 OPS against spin at both levels.
I think they pushed him (and this was hammered home for me by the Castro promotion) because Low-A pitching is just not very good, especially the longer into the season we get. But he has things he needs to work on. He's exciting, don't get me wrong. He's going to move up again the next rankings update. But I want to push back against the idea that he's just absolutely dominating High-A without anything to work on. He does have things to work on.
It's possible he gets to Portland very early next year. Perhaps even to start. But I don't think he gets there this year and feel pretty confident about that barring, say, him suddenly immediately figuring out LHP and breaking balls. (Who knows - he did figure out the groundball thing pretty fast...)

Baseball Prospectus has him number 9 in all of minor league baseball. One spot ahead of Mayer.

Well Roman Anthony is no longer the youngest player in any high-A league, because the Padres just promoted 17 year old Ethan Salas to high-A (also the Orioles and Rays have since promoted guys younger than Roman Anthony in the South Atlantic League).

But I don't think he gets there this year and feel pretty confident about that barring, say, him suddenly immediately figuring out LHP and breaking balls. (Who knows - he did figure out the groundball thing pretty fast...) I haven't seen Anthony in person, so I certainly wouldn't disagree that he may very well have things to work on in Salem. However, the performance against leftys may actually be an argument to promote him. Looking at the South Atlantic League vs the Eastern League, if you average the number of ABs against LHPs for the top 20 hitters in each league (in terms of number of ABs against LHP), the Eastern league hitters (76.35) have had almost 10 more ABs against leftys the South Atlantic League hitters (66.55). Now, if Anthony actually looks bad against leftys, and its not just that he's getting bad results, that's another story. That may be the case, I'll defer to those of you who have seen him for that judgement. But he'd actually get more looks at leftys in AA than in Greenville. Also, let me reiterate that I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, just throwing in another consideration about promotion. I'm probably on the train of, at least for the remainder of this year, there's not compelling evidence to promote him. And I do think he probably should figure out spin better before getting bumped up.

He hit a homer off of a lefty the other day. Has his left on left been improving?

He hit a homer off of a lefty the other day. Has his left on left been improving? Was an oppo shot too. The ball goes off his bat differently. I'm dreaming on him which maybe isn't the best idea as I've seen plenty of prospects not pan out but Roman seems different to me.

I needed this tweet quite frankly, especially the defense part of the ball.

Exciting. This is a pretty aggressive promotion, no? I ask seriously — you all track this closer than I do. He was in high school last year, right?
I love the prospects that force their way quickly. Hope he keeps it up.

Hope he keeps it up. I'm with you this seems aggressive but I'm all for it if the org thinks he's ready. I mean he'd have to be one of the youngest guys at AA I would think? Then again I believe he was one of the youngest at A+.

Hope he keeps it up. It's extremely aggressive. He will still be 19 years old at the start of next season and he's already in AA. As someone who has been following the system closely since the late 90s, it's been awhile since we had a 19 year old in AA. At least a legit prospect. I can't think of the last. edit: Xander, actually. So the last time was 2012. I could be forgetting someone obvious or someone meaningless. I think there was a Heiker in AA at 19. I can't remember his last name. M something. double edit: Heiker Menesis. That was 2011 though.
