Feels like a bonafide breakout. Would expect more rankings to follow suit in upcoming updates.

I'm currently happy with the E-Rod for Roman trade off. Bloom is having a tremendous year in the system and it's unfortunate how under the radar it is. Having a farm system that includes Mayer, Bleis, Roman, Rafaela, Yorke, and hopefully Teel and Zanetello is outstanding. Edit: Not to mention recent graduates of Wong, Duran, Casas and Bello. |

Agreed. It’s a shame they had too much $ on the books last year and picked further back then they had to in the last draft. Roman’s ascent seems to have strong implications for Verdugo’s long term future in Boston, but as we see here, letting the adults go and picking more kids via comp picks can yield major upside.

Roman’s ascent seems to have strong implications for Verdugo’s long term future in Boston, but as we see here, letting the adults go and picking more kids via comp picks can yield major upside. I understand what you’re saying here, but I think it would be ill-advised to let players with established, major league value to walk in free agency in the hopes that you can unearth a prospect like Anthony. Finding a kid with realistic potential to be an everyday guy with a majority of the compensatory picks would not be easy, in my opinion. |

Dang I hope Roman Anthony is as good as the publications think, but you better slow down. Certainly seeing him just 3 times last year in the FCL does not make me an expert. But please slow down some. He made solid contact last year and hit singles. So, after 15 games he is now the next great thing? Man, as a BIG Red Sox fan, I hope so.
To me it is unbelievable he is being ranked this highly so quickly. If, and I mean a big IF, he is still producing even close to this at the end of September, OK.
I certainly hope he is the next big thing...but a few weeks doesn't make it so!

I’m on the record as being interested in selling high on Anthony, not that I would necessarily jump at the chance.
It’s nice having a pipeline for prospects once more. I had a feeling back at the start of this season that this year’s team has an ‘06 feel to it with many young players ascending and/or struggling through challenges with hopes that they come out on the other side as solid or better performances while being surrounded with Vets. The various injury plagues also remind me of ‘06…
Back to Anthony - any word on how closely the Driveline people have worked with him, if at all? I wouldn’t be surprised. Just not sure how involved they are in the minor leagues and to what extent.
If he keeps cookin’, I’ll be a fellow legionnaire.

Selling high isn't always the best approach. Sometimes high helium prospects keep going higher. You just need to know your prospects and the data that indicates which ones are mote likely to stall and which ones are more likely to become studs.

OK, so I've been completely asleep. I see the stats, scouting, promotion, and accolades, but could someone give me a little one paragraph narrative? Why was he not on my radar until this moment (besides my sleepiness), and what should I be watching for the next 12 months?
Thank you both Norm, Jimoh... exactly what I was hoping for! I heard his name but didn't quite get the magnitude of the excitement. And do be fair, some of that has happened in the past 7-10 days, no? The national rankings are suddenly more current than SP, and that week seems to have made a difference. But I also now better understand how he built a foundation and then broke out. Very cool!

Well, he started off in Salem and - while he showed good discipline - the other stats were mundane. It was a small sample size. That showing seemed to have had limited influence with the decision makers. They chose to move him up to Greenville and he hasn't stopped raking since he got there. My conjecture is that the Sox had some idea of what he could do given what they'd seen and what they probably had in the data points from his performance. There may also have been input from the staff they've brought on to work with teams. His numbers in A+ are silly, and as good as the power has been, the discipline has carried over from A ball.
Add: I'll mention that the buzz on the site has been quite strong once he started proving out at the next higher level... so pay attention!

Among qualified Carolina League hitters, Anthony currently ranks 15th in walk rate (18.9 percent), 24th in strikeout rate (20 percent), 30th in on-base percentage, 15th in line-drive rate (28.3 percent), and fourth in swinging-strike rate (5.7 percent), per FanGraphs. To that end, Baseball America’s Josh Norris recently identified Anthony as a prospect who could be on the rise. “Anthony’s numbers this season might not jump off the page, but scouts who have seen him believe the ingredients are there for a potentially special player,” Norris wrote on Tuesday. “He has a gorgeous swing from the left side, an outstanding knowledge of the strike zone and raw power that belies his meager slugging output this year at Low-A Salem. “That raw juice also shows up in his 90th percentile exit velocity, which hovers around 108 mph,” added Norris. “For that power to really begin manifesting itself on the stat sheet, he’ll need to get the ball in the air much more often. But is there any recent precedent for a Sox prospect to rise that fast? How many levels did Mookie move up in one year?

Mookie was a bit different, I don't think he had anywhere near the same prospect pedigree that Anthony had coming out of the draft, and he didn't really start to go off until 2013 when he was 20. For fun I actually went back and looked at where he ranked on this site, and amazingly he didn't rank anywhere in the top 20 until the end of 2013. He was #10 on the site going into 2014 which is when he just took off like a rocket and never looked back.
This is maybe a little surperficial, but Roman reminds me more of Ryan Westmoreland than anyone else. It was only short season ball but he absolutely crushed it the summer of 09 as a 19 year old, which did not happen very often. I'm not sure how they compare tools wise but they seem like decently similar athletes.

Bleis is a far better comp to Westmoreland than Anthony in terms of tools. Skills, maybe. |

Bleis is a far better comp to Westmoreland than Anthony in terms of tools. Skills, maybe. True Bleis is closer to the 5 tool cf Westmoreland was than Roman. I more meant their backgrounds and profiles - tall LHH outfielders, drafted out of high school with large bonuses, had big seasons at 19.
This is more best case scenario, but maybe Kyle Tucker is a better comp tools wise. Depends on how the hit develops though.

Kyle Tucker at age 19: solid .278/.348/.403 line at Low-A, then got promoted and blew up High A with a .339/.435/.661 line

Click on the homepage here and on the right hand column is a link to Ex-players click on that find Mookie and viola. Before 2013 he stayed at whatever level he was at for the year. In 2013 he played at A and High A, and 2014 split about a third of a year with AA, AAA and Boston. His OPS at AA and AAA was above .900 and stayed above .800 with Boston. |
