They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Looking at the Cubs' roster, this... is not a bad team. Their team pitching fWAR is 9th in the majors (Red Sox are 21st); team positional WAR is 15th (Red Sox are 16th). Their run differential is +26 (Red Sox are +27). Must just be some bad luck that they're 5 games under .500.
And we're getting their three best starters too (though maybe it's debatable with Hendricks).

No pre-excuses. Have to beat sub-.500 teams in the coming weeks to be real.

You look at Stroman and Steele’s numbers and assume they are 10 games above .500 lol

Yet we’re 2-10 against the Pirates, Rockies, White Sox, and Cardinals, all of whom are putrid this year. And yet, we’re 12-1 against the Yankees and Blue Jays who are ahead of us in the standings. It’s part of the maddening behavior of the team this year. They beat the good teams and fall apart against the bad.

Haven't seen anyone mention but Dansby Swanson one of if not their best player and leader in fWAR this season is on the IL so he won't be playing this weekend. Gotta have 2 outta 3 here but those are some tough pitching matchups for the offense. Hopefully they hammer Stroman, don't like that guy one bit.

“Yet we’re 2-10 against the Pirates, Rockies, White Sox, and Cardinals, all of whom are putrid this year.” — To be fair, the Pirates were decent when the Sox played them (feels like a lifetime ago).

It was the second series of the year. Hard to say whether they were decent or just off to a hot start. They played well for awhile but the underlying metrics of the team weren’t all that good.

Team record can’t capture team health or whether the team is playing hot. Quality of competition and strength of schedule are worthy metrics nonetheless. But if the good teams always beat the bad teams like they are “supposed” to, the worst teams would win 10-20/yr, not 60-70/yr. Just my .02 that in the media environment, it’s become overemphasized. Last year, it was teams like the Twins and Angels that we ran into early when they looked like real contenders, well before each fell out of it.

Since June 14, the Red Sox own the AL’s best record (15-8), highest batting average (.279), and 3rd-lowest ERA (3.64).
Since June 30, the Sox own MLB’s best record (8-1) and highest batting average (.312).

Looking at the weather forecast in Chicago and we may get a late start on this one. 100% chance of T-storms at 8, drops to 50% at 9, and then seems good to go after. Just gonna be on the grounds crew to keep the field from flooding

If they're actually going to play Turner at 2B then this roster makes no sense. Kiké has no role except as the break in case of emergency SS, and Arroyo also has no role. Something's gotta give and you'd think it would have already happened over the ASB.

Whitlock is available to come off the IL on Tuesday. It will be interesting to hear (if anyone asks Cora) if he's on schedule to do so. If yes and he's healthy, that will solve a lot of problems.
