"It was entirely possible, and for a reasonable price. You can cry now." then goes on to list six (6) straight players making at least a $20m+ AAV in 2024. How the hell does he still have a job

Tomase is like a homeless person sitting on the sidewalk shouting over and over, "-Look at me!!!-Look at me!!!-Look at me!!!"
I live downtown and in the course of everyday living encounter homeless folks on the regular, but I've yet to have one yell at me, or even in my general direction. I find they mostly keep quiet about their unfortunate situation. As for Tomase, since he shouted LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME with his bogus Patriots news story, I haven't read a word he's written or listened to any of his clips on TV. I've no need for any of what he's selling.

Btw, is this the correct forum to be promoting & discussing a Tomase column? It feels wrong.

How the hell does he still have a job This is at least as dumb as the original tweet, Schwarber alone is -21 DRS last year, Rafaela and Story are the two best defenders in that lineup and saw a total of less than 500 innings to accumulate a defensive counting stat in 2023, discounting Betts time at 2nd doesn't give him the additional value of moving that time to the outfield, and Xander would presumably be better at 2B than SS.

Listened to Jim Bowden's XM MLB radio rant for 15 minutes on the Red Sox since they were highlighted yesterday on their spring training highlight. Here's the highlights, according to Bowden (I'm paraphrasing of course)-
-Boston's farm system is overrated. -Jared Duran doesn't have enough depth perception (I don't know what that means, maybe someone else can translate) -Giolito is a very bad baseball pitcher, but a good baker in a kitchen. -Didn't like Nick Pivetta walking 50 batters in 142 innings last year. Scoffed at that idea, in fact. -Called the Sox a bad run organization from top to bottom. -He liked Bryan Bello 2 years ago, but saw a completely lesser pitcher last year. Wondering what happened to him?
Don't shoot the messenger.

Ralph's salty he never got a call in October. You'd think the Athletic would have found an executive who's held a job in the past 15 years.

“Red Sox Fans: I don't think about you at all.” — And yet, here we are talking about him.
This whole thread is rather silly.

Because if there’s one guy in the media who would know a thing or two about “bad run organizations”, it’s Jim Bowden.

Wondering what happened to him? Don't shoot the messenger. Some of that is subjective, meaning it's legitimate for an analyst to comment on. I'd put the comment about the farm system and the competence of the organization in that category. I think the comment about the organization refers to Bloom and his team. I don't think he's already decided CB2 is a lousy POBBO. I'm guessing his comment about Duran's depth perception refers to his ability to read the depth of flyballs. I've never heard that described as the OF's depth perception. Giolito has had two bad years in a row, though we can always cherry pick his first half of last year and place some hope on that. It's what I'm doing. I didn't know he was a baker too and couldn't care less. The Pivetta comment is weird. His BB% was 8.5, just about average. His k% was 31.2, or better than average. Unless he sees a decline in Bello's stuff that nobody else has picked up on, I have no idea what Bowden is talking about there.

To be clear, Bowden is not a "Boston Sportswriter". He's a voice on MLB (Sirius and XM) and I've tuned he and the other voices out for the latter part of the off season. The nearly endless seat-of-the-pants drivel they churn out as they're forced to populate hours and hours of chatter is almost un-listenable. The stream-of-consciousness BS sends them into side-channels from which there's often no exit. It's really an embarrassment as you hear them grasping at verbal straws with lots of "uhh", "and, and, and", "but, but but". Five days worth might give you all of fifteen useful minutes of information. I don't need that.

All I will say about Jim Bowden’s takes is there’s a reason he’s got a Sirius XM show and not a job with a Major League Baseball team.

Almost feel bad for some of these folks. I mean they get paid to write or talk about this team and at the moment it has got to be tough. This is as close to a flatline in terms of excitement I’ve seen heading into a season in a very long time. Check the stats for signs of life but otherwise like Norm said it’s an easy time to avoid the rest at the moment.

People don’t dismiss Bowden because he isn’t working for a team, they dismiss him because he did it and was demonstrably awful at it.

I don't know that Jim was all that awful: 1290 - 1403 for two middlin' franchises (.502% &.484% W/L% respectively, historically). It doesn't look either team was appreciably better before or after him. Plus he had to work a good chunk of that for Marge Shott.
So a short impartial glance suggests he was a middle of the road exec. who is now (likely) a middle of the road analyst, neither astute nor a doofus.

The bad run org from top to bottom has the most World Series wins this century and it’s been a lengthy 4.5 seasons since the last win…..
Bowden has been a joke for a long time. The Boston sports writer specifically have taken on the mentality of 12 years olds

Doesn’t Bowden not work in a front office any more because he was skimming bonus money from Latin IFAs?
Anyways I find his writing to be among the worst of the national guys.

I’m probably wrong but to me it seems like when Felger got his prime time slot he claim to fame is to call out the teams. I agree to a point. But when you fo it for attention I gave a problem. Felger calls out. If your a reporter positive for the Celtics, your a green teamer. So he has a few following his footsteps. We know who they are. That’s why I love coming here. Everyone here has more to offer than those guys.

He wasn't a Boston-based sports writer but Chris Mortensen of ESPN, who died today, asserted himself into a major local sports story with results that were bad for the Patriots, the NFL, ESPN and Mortensen's own legacy.
You'll recall that he put up the inaccurate tweet about the synthetic, totally fabricated DFG controvery and then refused to take it down even after it was clear it was wrong.
My view is that it's not a good thing when someone passes (except, of course, for the true monsters of the world) but also that it's important not to sanitize a person's life when he/she does die. In Mortensen's csae, that requires recognizing that his conduct was dishonest and deplorable.
Unlike Tomase, Mortensen did not have the guts to admit a mistake. It was his equivalent of claiming he misinterpreted the rules - rules that everyone else understood. Acceptance of responsibility is important. Mortensen declined to do that.
Still, RIP.

Seeing many stories "reporting" Scott Boras is saying there's increased interest in Snell and Montgomery. Don't Boras and his clients have enough money to buy ad space?
