I’m reading Cora’s comments, and it makes me think this is his last season here. Nothing he’s saying indicates he’ll be back next year. Could be contractual gamesmanship, but it makes me sad that he reflected on 2023 and found he was unhappy and unhealthy while managing. Hoping this year is better for him. Add this on top of the rumors that he wants a front office job dating back to last year, and I think it’s clear he doesn’t want to manage that much longer. He’s said as much.
If he’s let go, I really wonder what the direction is for this team. Surely there are other good managers out there, but it’s been crossroads after crossroads recently. The paths are many.

My gut sense is that ~20% of former players would be decent managers and that you should change them up every few years anyway; especially if the team's not doing as well as you'd like.

That's how I interpreted his comments. It must have made him sick to his stomach watching such a fundamentally flawed team like he had last year and it must have bothered him seeing that there was never going to be any real front office help. I'd guess he's not too thrilled about this offseason either and probably figures that he has a middling team that is still a ways away from becoming a true contender. I doubt he's back for 2025, irregardless of his rapport with Breslow. My guess is that the 2025 Red Sox will be managed by a former catcher of theirs with the most likely scenario that Jason Varitek becomes their next manager and an outside possibility that David Ross gets another opportunity.

Varitek will be the manager , Cora will get what he wants , a contract bigger than Counsell and the Boston Red Sox will be fine

I certainly would not bet much on the Red Sox to sign him (although the “kept tabs” line suggests more interest than the zero % some beat writers have basically been saying). That said… who exactly is the contender ready to pounce on Jordan Montgomery when he lowers his asking price? LAD, ATL and HOU don’t need him. NYY traded him previously for a guy in a walking boot. SEA and TOR have pretty robust rotations already. TEX seemingly isn’t comfortable with the financial result of their TV ruling, and have Scherzer, DeGrom, and Mahle coming back their summer to boot. Philly seems like the most likely to say YOLO with Dombrowski, especially if they don’t get a Wheeler extension done. But I’m not sure where else these “industry sources” expect him to go. I forget where I just read this, but with their tax situation, for the Phillies to add $25M to their budget would actually cost them $41 or 44M. That is why DD is no longer in Boston!

The Red Sox have had a notoriously awful relationship with Boras for a long time. Who was the last big ticket Boras client that they signed(not counting Adrian Beltre on his pillow contract)? JD Drew? I’ve been skeptical of the Sox working a big deal with Boras all Winter and I’ll stick to that now. I’m thinking the last pieces are going to be Pham and maybe Clevinger. ADD: I don’t understand the fixation on Michael A. Taylor. Isn’t he redundant to Rafaela anyway? I think I’d rather watch the kid play. You have to go all the way back to Yoshida for this. And before that Bogaerts' extension. I’ll give you Yoshida, but Xander wasn’t even a free agent at the time he re-signed. Who else is on this list? The Sox really do tend to avoid big ticket Boras guys at all costs. I think it stems from the Mark Teixeira fiasco, but there were probably other issues with him along the way, too.

I haven't seen the comments but I had exactly this impression numerous times in watching him during the 2023 season. Might also have had something to do with the team more or less quitting each of the last two Septembers. And makes me wonder, yet again, why he's been seen as the Essential Man of the organization who had to be kept on at all costs, even if it complicated the GM search, etc.

In Bogaerts' case, isn't it all the more reason to think the club is comfortable dealing with him if they got his guy to sign an extension even before free agency - something his clients "never" do? I don't know where you're getting the idea at all that they avoid him. And I notice that his big name clients this offseason haven't signed with any other teams yet either...

It not so much Boras as all bib name FAs. Sox just don’t go there all that often. When they do its quite often looked as undervalued ( JD , story) .

To your point, they waited Boras all the way until past the beginning of spring training in 2018 to get a deal done. The Sox don't typically dable in Boras high priced players because he looks to set the market on most deals, or break records on contracts. With the only exception being Adrian Beltre, who Boras wanted to use the Sox to get a better deal a year later.

On the same day Rangers GM Chris Young admits that their roster is likely set and implied that their TV deal may prevent a Montgomery reunion, Zach Wheeler suggests hope for a Phillies contract extension. Come on Dombrowski, you can do it! Extending your ace pitcher a year before he hits free agency has never backfired on you before - get ‘er done.

And on a different note....There were quite a few posters concerned about hiring Breslow because his lack of experience. They were concerned he would be overmatched because he has never been in a position to be the guy pulling the trigger on deals. Then, today we get this: I'm sure there are different readings of that, but it really just screams, "I wasn't prepared for the job" As usual, you’re getting dragged by the “fingers in ears la la la” brigade, but I largely agree with this. There was a lot of concern before the offseason from national writers that Breslow’s inexperience would lead to trouble pulling the trigger on deals, and that seems to be more or less what happened. If the offseason didn’t go the way he wanted, that’s a failure, however else folks want to spin it.

I ain’t gonna be mad if they sign him, but that deal could be… oooph. EDIT - Freddy was on this first.

Well in the Red Sox supposedly continual quest for starting pitcher, perhaps they should consider Don Newcombe; he's a bit past his prime but he has put together some really good seasons.

Regardless of if the Sox don’t sign Wheeler, he’s another option on the market. That increases the likelihood that the Red Sox can land a high end option, even if it’s not him. That is good for the Red Sox, in my opinion.
I think I’m just a lot lower on Montgomery than a lot of people. I don’t really see him as a high-end option. I honestly might prefer old man Wheeler in his own right—he’s a real deal ace, and it’s not like Montgomery seems likely to come cheap himself. And I’m generally very skeptical of giving pitchers in their mid thirties big contracts.

We've made the decision to close the thread. If there are more specific topics to discuss or if news actually happens, please feel free to create a thread, but let's steer clear of the general FA talk now that pitchers and catchers have reported.
