And with that, I think it's time to start talking about the AFL roster. IIRC each team gets like 6-7 spots, some of each pitchers and hitters. I think foreign nationals with alternative winter leagues are not allowed. And they have to be from AA or AAA with some potential for A+. Song is an excellent candidate. Bannon and Bleis wouldn't be eligible, though they could report to instrux if they're healthy. Possibly Mayer if his injury drags a little. Who else has missed time with an injury, or is in A+ and knocking at the promotion door, or is short some innings?

My guess:
Hickey (Dark horse, Teel) Mayer One of Meidroth or Jordan Sikes or Rosier
Dobbins 3 of the following: Guerrero Zeferjahn Troye Hoppe Liu Coffey Gambrell Song Wikelman

No more rule about what level a guy is at (used to be everyone had to be at AA or above as of August 1, with one exception per team. Wound up leading to a decent number of AA promotions the last week of July). Talent level is usually AA-ish still. No 40-man guys.

You would think Mata is going to get heavy consideration here since he missed almost all the season. He's scheduled to come back mid August from what I've read.

If Meidroth's slump has been from an adjustment they're traying to take, then he'll probably be there; if it's from him hitting the wall then I'm guessing they'll give him a breather.
Might throw Wyatt Olds into the possible pitchers, he's gotten some momentum going and he was always kind of an obvious bullpen candidate. Innings-wise I'd think there's zero concern.
Gambrell figures to be north of 120 IP after throwing 55 total from 2020 to 2022. I guess the R5 eligibility is a wrinkle, but I'm thinking they probably give him a full offseason.

Would it be too much of a step up in competition for Roman Anthony as a 19 yo with a half season of Hi A under his belt?
Would love to see Teel and Mayer, also Wikelman and Guerrero.
Others - Bonaci, Blaze and Meidroth.

Others - Bonaci, Blaze and Meidroth. It's rare for them to pick a guy after his first full season. Typically they'll bring them in for the Fall Performance Program and send them home. I'd bet good money they do that with Anthony.

How many guys do they bring to Fall Performance (is that the new "Instrux"?) Is it everyone else, 50% of the org? 20%?
At some point was there or could there be a piece about what that program means? Do they play some games? Where is this all located? Just a human-interest type thing.

We list the players in attendance (or in the case of last year, who were supposed to attend) on the Fall-Winter page. It's basically a post-season camp. Last year it would've been in two waves basically based on where guys are at in the org. soxprospects.com/fall-winter.htmIt's not free Fall Instructional League anymore because teams don't play each other.

Not the most exciting group.
So it turns out Mata is eligible.

Not the most exciting group. So it turns out Mata is eligible. Yeah we figured this out in another thread on Mata. Don't know if I agree with your assessment of the group. If you figure that they are, in fact, sticking to not sending guys in their first or first full seasons (read: no Teel, Anthony, Meidroth, Hoppe...), you basically get this group or something close. Hickey is best available, reasonable catcher and predictable. Top 20 guy. Bonaci is a top 20 available, reasonable, non-hurt infielder. Yorke probably wasn't repeating. Rosier was the fairly obvious and best available, reasonable outfielder, imo. Top 50. Mata is top 30 and was fairly obvious once we realized he could go. Desperately needs innings. Penrod is a guy. See our discussion of him on the podcast and Ian's Twitter. Top 50 with momentum. Cepeda & Troye are solid relievers from that 25-50 or 60 group. Troye is top 30 or 40 and Cepeda has upward momentum towards that group perhaps. Olds is maybe the least exciting but they're trying to fix him. His stuff was impressive a couple springs ago. Olds is the only unranked guy. That's a good group. Often you used to get a bunch of whatever pitchers and at least one or two bleh hitters.

For anyone interested in watching, I believe this website will have a link for live stream of some of the games. Doesn't look like the links are active just yet so my apologies if this is a dead-end www.mlb.com/arizona-fall-league/live-streams

Penrod starting for Glendale. Hickey batting cleanup and DH'ing, Bonaci batting 9th and playing 2B. Tough luck loss for Penrod. Went four, gave up three hits, and one earned. A little wild with 3 bb, but also tacked on 4ks Hickey 0-3 with a walk and a k Brainer 1-3 with a k And with that the first Arizona fall league boxscore review is complete.

May be a question more suited for someone like Ian who has seen him (multiple times?) but what is hypothetically a realistic best case timeline for Penrod due to his advanced age? If he continues to progress would he spend a year in AA then a year in AAA before making it to the show. Or would they be more aggressive with his age, maybe splitting the year between the two? Or do they start him in AAA next year? Or does he still seem like an organization depth piece?
I would imagine AFL performance and off season improvements would play a part, as would how he looks in the spring. It's definitely too early to know for sure, but off season is the perfect time for speculation.

I watched the first five innings last night but had to get the link via mlb.com/video as it never appeared on the livestream page.
