Does Mills (or any minor league player who is out for the season with injury) count against his respective minor league team’s roster limits? Like, if we assign Mills to AAA, is Worcester playing down a man the whole season? Also, does an out for the season injured minor league player count against the player restrictions for the lower minors - i.e. if you assign Mills to rookie ball as an injured player to maintain more flexibility in the upper minors, does he count as one of the three players with 4+ years pro experience? Former has been answered. To answer the latter, during the year, players on the 60-day IL or full-season IL (yes, they're different) do not count toward the full-system domestic reserve list.

Red Sox signed INF Jamie Westbrook - he was announced as receiving a non-roster spring training invite. He spent all of last year with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (NYY AAA). Hit .294/.400/.896 and played mostly 2B and 3B. www.milb.com/player/jamie-westbrook-642197

Westbrook first got to AAA in 2018 and has consistently hit well there but hasn't seen a big league game yet. .243/.325/.376 Steamer projection for next year is pretty decent

He was 24 and had worked his way steadily up through the D-Backs' system from HS to AAA. If 2020 had been a normal year, there's a good chance he could've made his MLB debut with his hometown Snakes. Since then, he's bounced between orgs at the AAA level.

"made it as far as Triple-A Reno before reaching minor-league free agency at the conclusion of the 2019 campaign. Shortly thereafter, Westbrook latched on with the Giants but was released before the COVID-shortened 2020 season even began" bloggingtheredsox.com/2023/12/11/red-sox-sign-former-olympian-jamie-westbrook-to-minor-league-deal/

Great landing spot for him.

They were in on him last year iirc So maybe no Maldonado after all? Although I’d guess Perez probably a minor league deal given the health concerns Awesome defender when he’s out there. I like it if he’s the 3C

Never a bad idea to have added depth at the C position but he had season ending surgery for his rotator cuff in April so not sure I'm seeing the point of this one. I'm guessing it's a minor league deal but still.

If its a minor league deal then fine. But he's pretty old for a catcher and just had surgery last year. I'm not sure what the play is here other than depth.

So is this the end of the "Stephen Scott - catcher" experiment? Looks like they AAA main and backup set now

So is this the end of the "Stephen Scott - catcher" experiment? Looks like they AAA main and backup set now I think there's still part time work for him at C there. Realistically his big league upside there is that they let him catch a couple games to cover a short IL stint.
I dunno if Perez really changes things. There's a good chance he's toast and he probably has an opt out early in the season anyway.

If he can still play (and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess they've checked his medicals and had someone meet with him) and barring other injuries (or a trade out of the blue), they appear to have the catching situation covered at least to start the season, with only two on the 40-man.

Pretty much any upper level catcher is getting a spring training invite.

Red Sox released Ali Ascanio, Marcos Almanzar, Andres Jimenez, Alex Castillo, Jose Liriano, Albert Chalas, Jean Carlos Reyes, Natanael Eusebio, and Yizreel Burnet on 1/12. Making room at the Signed side of the Academy. Burnet was the one with potential there but I'm guessing his arm must be done. Has been super injury prone.
