I do not think there are many (if any) minor league free agents I would worry about loosing. That said, there are a number who would add a lot to filling out Worcester or Portland’s roster.
November 2023
Eddy Alvarez Skylar Arias Cam Booser Narciso Crook Tyler Dearden Alison Del Orbe Tyler Esplin Franklin German Michael Gettys Rio Gomez Ronaldo Hernandez Dominic LoBrutto Oddanier Mosques Brendan Nail Aaron Perry Tyreque Reed Victor Santos Sterling Sharp Bradley Zimmer

Red Sox released Daniel Nunez (listed here as Bryant Nunez) on Friday - had a good statistical season in the DSL this year, but was also 20. Many more releases to come in the DSL given the new group signing in January.

Many more releases to come in the DSL given the new group signing in January. Well, "good" in that he struck out 12 per 9 and the ERA was good. But he also walked 6 per 9 and was 20 years old. They'll give you some time to figure out control, and they'll give a shot to an older DSL guy, but you probably can't be both.

Mark Contreras appears to be one of these guys who they're going to have to tear the jersey off his back before he gives up his dream. I believe in you, Mark. This is the year you break out!

Red Sox released Rivaldo Avila, Casey Cobb, Yoberto Mejicano, and Oscar Rangel. Also signed LHP Helcris Olivarez, who was in the Rockies org and did not pitch in 2023 (and only 2 innings in 2022). Apparently was dealing with a left shoulder strain in 2022 and rehabbing in 2023. BA had him as the Rockies #15 prospect in 2022: www.baseballamerica.com/players/6576-helcris-olivarez/

I'm not calling it a mistake or anything, just a moderate surface-level surprise.

Weird career for Olivarez. Two years in the DSL, two years in rookie ball, then he is added to the 40 after the COVID season without ever playing in full season ball.
Sounds like he had a big league arm before his shoulder issues. Very interested to see what he looks like in the spring

Looks like the Red Sox signed LHP Jorge Benitez to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. He was with the Mariners org last season.

Benitez signing is official. Wyatt Mills is back on a minor league deal, too.

I was hoping they'd get Mills back. I would guess it's a two year deal considering he's a July TJS. I think he has a pretty good chance of contributing in the majors in 2025.

With Mills I wouldn't be surprised if it's some sort of poison pill type of deal to make sure nobody Rule 5s and stashes him.

Genius! (I kid. But sure, why not? All for minor league FAs).

Does Mills (or any minor league player who is out for the season with injury) count against his respective minor league team’s roster limits? Like, if we assign Mills to AAA, is Worcester playing down a man the whole season?
Also, does an out for the season injured minor league player count against the player restrictions for the lower minors - i.e. if you assign Mills to rookie ball as an injured player to maintain more flexibility in the upper minors, does he count as one of the three players with 4+ years pro experience?

Minor league teams also have injured lists, and players on the IL don't count against the roster limits (just like the major league IL).
