Lou Merloni Gresh & Fauria today - "I had heard that Theo had played a really big role in this, and really believes in him Breslow moving forward." ( Around the 4:50 minute mark.)I know there was some speculation in media circles (partly clickbait I think) about an Epstein return. What's interesting is if it turns out he was a bit of an outside voice nudging Kennedy and co in Breslow's direction. Would love someone to ask Sam Kennedy at the press conference about Theo's role and/or Breslow about his relationship with Theo.

If true, you can't really have a better guy vouching for someone to run the Boston Red Sox than the wunderkind Theo Epstein himself. Not in my book anyway. Guess I'll just say if Theo thinks he's the man for the job then who am I to have any issues with his hiring. Not that I really did other than the slight lack of experience.

FWIW the sense in Chicago is that the Cubs lost a good one. Within local baseball circles it was thought that it was only a matter of time before Breslow would get a shot at a top spot.

JH should offer Theo 20% of FSG and then get out of his way.

Not that there is a ton to be learned from these introductions and press conferences but in the case of this one I am a bit interested to see the comments from the organization on what type of qualities made Breslow their guy and overall just what made them decide to go with him even with the slight lack of experience being high up in an org.

Dates I’m really interested in: - The press conference to introduce Breslow: Wanna know his philosophy and how his FO gonna be shaped - The announcement of the new pitching coach - GM meeting: WHERE THE SOX ARE GONNA PICK IN NEXT YEAR’S DRAFT - Yamamoto’s press conference introduction in Fenway

From Chad Jennings’s latest (I don’t know how to block the quote, apologies):
Some in the organization have expressed concern about Breslow’s relative lack of experience and the potential that he could keep pushing the team further to the analytic side of player evaluation and roster construction.
If that’s the case, fire ‘em. No reason to keep people around if they’re already bad-mouthing the top dog in the media before he’s even entered the building.

Being anti-analytics in player evaluation is just the same as being anti-winning, those arguing for it just don't see that.

Good teams rely on both analytics and old fashioned scouting. Need to do both well. How to balance each and turn into action is obviously the key.

"Some in the organization" vs. "Friends of Bloom": choose your faction. With some in the org already badmouthing the new guy before he even starts I’d say it’s a pretty clear choice at this point They need to weed these rats out, they’re poison. Just gonna be more dysfunctional BS.

I thought they would lean toward someone with big-chair experience but I like the hire. Every bit as smart as Chaim and just as tapped into the analytics/strategery side of things, plus a long on-field/clubhouse career, so he has intimate knowledge of pitching mechanics and won’t be intimidated by veteran players when difficult decisions are in order (a huge Achilles heel for Chaim). Hope he’ll be better at knowing when consummating the right trade is important enough to make the small concession to git er done. And, of course, Yamamoto…

If that’s the case, fire ‘em. No reason to keep people around if they’re already bad-mouthing the top dog in the media before he’s even entered the building. The hardest part is finding the leakers. There's definitely some people in the front office who harbored discontent under Bloom. It could be them, or it could be others who liked Bloom and are still bitter. Finally, it could be folks such as O'Halloran, Romero and Ferreira who interviewed or spurned. This is tough to root-out, but it's the landscape when an organization brings in a new CEO (in this case a new POBO), but doesn't let that person clean house in the executive suites. Maybe within a year Breslow will be able to tell who is on his side and who isn't and can make adjustments then. Either way, he should be allowed to bring in some trusted lieutenants who can help him create a structure and identify and excise the office cancers.

I agree and to clarify my last point I was not saying otherwise. However I do also sometimes think people paint it as a false dichotomy, like leaning heavily into analytics means you can’t use scouting somehow. I also think many anti-analytics people don’t fully understand what analytics means think that it somehow precludes scouting, you can use scouting IN your analytics!

"NERD, NEEERRD" the 300-pound failed-ballplayer anti-analytics losers who can't turn on a computer yell at the dude who pitched in 576 major league games as they slowly morph into a sentient cholesterol blockage.
