From Chad Jennings’s latest (I don’t know how to block the quote, apologies): Some in the organization have expressed concern about Breslow’s relative lack of experience and the potential that he could keep pushing the team further to the analytic side of player evaluation and roster construction. If that’s the case, fire ‘em. No reason to keep people around if they’re already bad-mouthing the top dog in the media before he’s even entered the building. The hardest part is finding the leakers. There's definitely some people in the front office who harbored discontent under Bloom. It could be them, or it could be others who liked Bloom and are still bitter. Finally, it could be folks such as O'Halloran, Romero and Ferreira who interviewed or spurned. This is tough to root-out, but it's the landscape when an organization brings in a new CEO (in this case a new POBO), but doesn't let that person clean house in the executive suites. Maybe within a year Breslow will be able to tell who is on his side and who isn't and can make adjustments then. Either way, he should be allowed to bring in some trusted lieutenants who can help him create a structure and identify and excise the office cancers. There is definitely going to be discontent whenever new senior leadership takes over from the existing workers. Of course baseball is different than many businesses in that disgruntled employees have an outlet besides their coworkers and friends, in that they can go to the media. Complaining to the media this early is ridiculous unless you are already planning on leaving. Is it possible those “concerns” were raised by people prior to Breslow being hired. There is a difference between discussing possible weaknesses of candidates not yet hired and talking bad about a new boss after he gets the job.

Henry also was impressed with Breslow’s overall intellectual curiosity.
Henry: "How often do you think about the Roman Empire?"
Breslow: "All the time."
Henry: "YOU'RE HIRED."

Good stories, including one from Hoyer on how Breslow once gave a presentation that was too hard to understand, then went off and learned how to present complex material to a broad audience clearly: "Hoyer sat down with Breslow, and offered some feedback to make the valuable information more digestible. Shortly thereafter, Breslow returned with another presentation that perfectly laid out the issues. “It was so impressive how quickly it happened. I couldn’t believe the change from the first one to the second one, it was amazing,” Hoyer recalled. “I think the most impressive thing to me is I know him and he took that feedback to heart, like ‘OK I need to figure out how to present dense material to a group of people with different backgrounds. I got it.’ I guarantee he read stuff on it, worked on it, rehearsed it — it was really impressive, the metamorphosis.” That ability to adapt so quickly, synthesizing complex information into usable data, served Breslow well as he rose through the Cubs front office over the course of five seasons,..." theathletic.com/5003672/2023/10/27/red-sox-craig-breslow-testimonials/?source=emp_shared_article

I love the thought that Hoyer had to to Craig to pretty much say “please dumb down your presentation, its way to advanced for some of the FO folk”

Agree. I also like the Breslow outcome. But the first passage that you quoted certainly makes it clear that their top tier choices turned them down and they had to lower their sights and focus on "more obtainable choices." They should be doing some soul searching to determine why what used to be a coveted job is now one that A-list choices turn down.

Glad they at least reached out to Mejdal, thought I was taking crazy pills not hearing his name mentioned at all in the search. Happy enough with Breslow anyhow.

I greatly dislike the Orioles franchise. Baseball or not it is pretty immoral to deny employees opportunity to seek professional growth when they’ve exceeded expectations for you.

I greatly dislike the Orioles franchise. Orioles Ownership: "Sig, we really want to keep you in Baltimore, so we've decided to give you a slight raise. *checks excel spreadsheets* Oh whoops, I just realized we had to use the 7 dollars from the 'Extend Adley Fund' and now it's empty. Oh well - you and Mike can find a trade for him when we need to, right?"

Yep, this is some BS in my mind. The guy could have had a shot to run a baseball ops but the Orioles being dinks said nope you can't go talk to the Sox about it. I'm sure it happens from time to time but I honestly can't remember in sports any team not allowing a guy to interview for what clearly would be a promotion. Hopefully it has some negative effects for them going forward in hiring guys for their FO. I'd have to imagine it might make some guys think twice on signing on to that org if they think they will be prohibited from attempting to seek out a promotion in a new org.

Sounds like they didn’t even deny the request outright, they just kind of passive-aggressively “forgot” to respond to the email “oh my god SO sorry I just saw this, we TOTALLY wanted to let you interview Sig but we’ve just been SO busy, well glad you got Craig Breslow anyway ok kisses byeeeee”

It’s the Os their owners are crooks, the two brothers literally had lawsuits against each other at some point
They are more about saying they own a team than actually caring about the team they own

This seems like a really good hire as most people believe pitching is the greatest need going forward. A few have expressed concerns about lack of front office experience and connections to the high levels of other front office types around MLB. That makes no sense to me at all. Strikes me as the typical American fascination with management and believing executives are a special breed.

All the comments complaining about not having the money to sign players who are 5-6 years from free agency, the drama with their broadcaster, etc is just embarrassing. Red Sox fans have been incessantly complaining about Henry in recent years, but if you gave him their core and open payroll right now you could almost guarantee at least 1 WS ring, and I feel very confident the Orioles won’t win one.

Really should have snuck in a line about Mejdal being seen as one of the clear favorites at the beginning of the process, just to maximize Baltimore disharmony.

I wonder who this was. Friedman, Billy Beane, Mozeliak are a few that come to mind. Idk how many current front office executives can be considered 'prominent'.

There was a bit of talk about Antonetti at the start of all this, my guess would be him. He’s another guy out of the UMass sports management masters program, grew up in New Haven. Would fit a lot of the descriptors used.

I wonder if they might still circle back to Sig as the GM working for Breslow? Still a promotion, valuable spot to be in for the sake of building up a strong resume for a top gig.

That owner seems like, "You've got a contract. I expect you to honor it." Which means, Sig will be looking as soon as it's up.

I actually wondered whether it was Theo Epstein. As we know, reporters are coy, and sometimes a little creative, in concealing the identity of people. Theo is not affiliated with any team but he is an executive with MLB. It's not implausible that a writer might describe him as "a prominent, current executive" to camouflage him. I mean McAdam named the other four, so why not this one?
