They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Goes without saying since Seattle has one of if not the best pitching staffs in the league but those are some tough matchups for the Sox to lead off the season with. Let's hope the Sox SPs are up to the task of matching those tough SPs from Seattle and the bats start off hot!

Okay. Starting tomorrow I'm going to try to put this weird offseason behind me. Whatever mighta been, this is in some ways going to be the most fun and interesting team to root for in years. Almost every guy on the roster is either young and somewhere between intriguing and exciting, or else is signed long-term and poised for a potential bounce-back season. How many teams have pre-arb guys, or young guys on extensions, at 4 of 5 starting pitcher spots, and 7 out of 9 position player spots, as well as most of the bullpen? Wherever the final record ends up, this should really be a turning point season for this organization.

The Mariners rotation is insane. Cant wait to see how they squander it again this year.

One thing that struck me in looking at the pitching numbers is that each of the 8 starters had a 2023 BB/9 ratio lower than the MLB average of 3.3. Bello 2.6, Pivetta 3.2, Crawford 2.5, Whitlock 1.6. Castillo 2.6, Kirby 0.9, Gilbert 1.7, Miller 1.8.
Another is that 3 of the Mariners' starters pitched more than 190 innings. None of the Red Sox pitched more than 157. Of course Whitlock wasn't a starter last year and Pivetta was a bulk guy for part of the year.

Duran Let's go Bello, Grissom, and even Abreu are up there for me too. Also Pivetta and O’Neill on contract years with a wide array of outcomes will be interesting. It’s hard to picture what contracts they’re looking at if they succeed this year.

The Mariners rotation is insane. Cant wait to see how they squander it again this year. I was thinking the same….and they traded Robbie Ray! Do the Mariners have 4 starters better than the Sox best starter??? Perhaps they do. Fortunately it’s still March and everyone will be on low pitch counts to start the season.

You could probably make an argument that their 5th starter Woo who is starting the season on the IL would be in the mix as the Sox best starter too. Crazy good rotation. Emerson Hancock isn't a half bad option to have as a SP either and he's their 6th guy.

There's a good chance the Red Sox starters lines look pretty could coming home from this West coast trip. Aside from Julio no other hitter on the Mariners is scary. Julio should hit 2nd which means the Mariners are trotting out Jorge Polanco, Mitch Garver and Cal Raleigh behind him. Then the Sox play the Athletics and Angels after that....sheesh. That might be the easiest stretch for our pitching all year. I hope the young lads settle in.
If I was a Mariners fan I would be even more livid than Sox fans. They have the young core and Ace pitchers in arbitration, just need a few bats.

Ahhhh fresh baseball air. This first gameday thread of the year always makes it real for me - thanks to those who make it happen. For today at least, my hope outweighs any pessimism of the last several months. 162-0 is still within reach. Will enjoy seeing you all on the rollercoaster.

Exciting that the counting games have arrived. The rebuild is taking hold and it will be fun to follow Duran, Abreu, Raffaela and eventually Grissom to see if they can be part of the core group going forward. Like every season, starting pitching will be the key and is the weakest part of the team as the season starts. One or two of the Houk, Crawford, Whitlock group taking a big forward step will be needed for this team to be in the post season picture. All starts with game 1.
PLAY BALL !!!!

Nice to read Seattle with a payroll of $160k may have 5 starting pitchers apparenlty better than any one Sox stater. Makes me less worked up about the Sox with payroll at $213M not spending $$$ chasing the Sales of the world

If the Sox win 1 game in this series vs this pitching staff that has to be considered a success.

We started 2019 season on the west coast. Lost 3/4 in Seattle, then 3/4 in Oakland and 2/3 in Arizona. I remember Cora mentioning that start after the season. Had a lousy spring training that year. Hope our solid spring training doesn’t allow that to happen again.
Obviously, I’d rather have a great team like 2018. But, following a developing but talented team is interesting.

Cora treated ST 2019 like a Country Club and didn’t ramp up his pitchers properly. He figured they could just throw their gloves on the field and beat everyone. He was wrong. That team really should have fared better. That was a lost opportunity there.
