I had figured he was one of the young players being referenced before the season, makes all the sense in the world to lock up a guy that you are certain will provide value on one side of the ball. |

Considering Colt Keith got 6x$28.5 million I'd imagine we're looking at similar $ and option years (3). I'll round up and go total years and money is 10x90 if the team exercises all options.

Love it, same thoughts as other extensions - less concerned about a million or 5 during the arb years, hope we traded some more there for more club options on the end. Assuming he stayed up all year he'd be in line to hit FA winter 2029 just after he turned 29. (Math is easy for these 2000 babies!)

Makes sense. High floor guy so absolute worst case is they slightly overpay for a gold glove quality defensive substitution. Best case they wildy underpay for a couple all star seasons if he learns some approach at the plate. 90% chance it falls somewhere in the middle, which I'm 100% ok with.

8 years through 2031 means that it includes 2024? So we use a little more of this year's cap room to save mony down the line? (I know you used to couldn't do this after opening day but I think that's changed...?)

He'd be making an additional $5M to $5.5M above what he would have gotten in '24, '25 and '26. That will not strain the budget in any of those three years. After that, the economic rewards of the deal start to tip toward the club. If he pans out, he'll be a nice cheap 3 WAR player on some great Red Sox teams. |

Isn't it too late to include 2024 in the deal? Maybe I'm wrong on that. I'm not 100% confident in that report, sometimes guys get a little sloppy with the language on these deals.
8/50 would be close to Colt Keith's deal with the options guaranteed. I think Keith's market value at signing would have probably been higher than CR's.
I would guess Ceddanne's typical year to year earnings through arb are in the 25-30 million range, so they're paying about 2/20-25 for his age 29-30 fa seasons. I think Ceddanne did well for himself if it's a straight 8/50. I think at equilibrium the Sox should be getting more of a bargain for being the party to absorb the risk here given the player is highly uncertain to be a long term starter. But, whatever, Sox made sure to get the deal done.

So if it starts this year they buy 3 pre-arb years, 3 arb years, 2 FA years, so for the pre-arb it's about $2.2M. For the arb years I'll use Verdugo as a comp: $3.55, $6.3, $8.7 or $18.55 total. So about $20.75M he would get over the next 6 years through arb if things go roughly as projected. For the 2 FA years he'd be 29 and 30 I think, and if he's an average player he's probably looking at something like $15-$20m AAV then (though over a deal longer than two years).
So if it's 8 years including this one buying two FA years it doesn't strike me as a huge discount or anything based on his expected value, but if he hits the higher end of his projections they'll save a lot, plus they get to spread the AAV's better which should help later on. Rafaela gets certainty.
Add: My take is the deal from a Red Sox-business perspective is fine, not fantastic, would have been nice to get one of those FA years at least as an option rather than a guarantee, but more importantly I love that we're extending home grown guys in general and I'm not gonna sweat about absolute value maximization on these deals.

If 8/50 includes this year, I don’t love it. They almost can’t send him down to AAA. I’ll reserve judgement til we see the actual deets though. Scotty Smalls has it right (as do others).

Casas and houck please Everyone talks about Devers eventually ending up at DH, but I’m imagining him at 1B instead. If that happens, I don’t think Casas is the guy to extend. I think Casas, himself, projects as a DH before too long. |
