They're meant to be a lot less formal than other threads on the forum, so to moderate them the same way would be silly. However, we do ask posters to maintain a certain level of decorum in these threads, and we plan on moderating the Gameday threads a little more actively this season. In particular, we ask that posters refrain from being overly repetitive with their posts (if you've made your point, let it go), refrain from monopolizing the discussion (if you are making more than a couple posts in a row, you probably need to slow down a little bit), and of course, follow the Ground Rules ( link). The point is to make these threads worth participating in and fun for all posters, from our long-time fixtures to people just signing up today. -The Management

Is it my imagination or do the Red Sox just regularly kill themselves with well below replacement-level performances. Let's see... sum of negative WAR position players' WAR totals:
| 2024
| 2023
| 2022
| 2021
| 2019
| Orioles | -1.4 | -1.4 | -3.9 | -6.7 | -5.7 | Yankees | -0.4 | -3.2 | -0.6 | -2.4 | -2.0 | Rays | -0.7 | -1.0 | -1.8 | -1.0 | -0.7 | Blue Jays
| -0.1 | -1.1 | -0.4 | -1.7 | -3.6 | Red Sox
| -2.5 | -2.3 | -3.1 | -2.6 | -4.4 |
No, I was right. In the division only the Yankees last year and the Orioles when they sucked have been worse than the Red Sox. On pace for -20 in 2024.
Right now O'Neill, Duran, Casas, and the catchers have combined for +2.5. Everyone else has combined for -2.1.

Eddy Alvarez, a person I had never heard of, is 34 years old, is not on the 40-man roster, appears to be bad at baseball, and hasn't even gotten much time recently at SS. What is Lou going on about there?

I'm still bitter about being swept by these guys last year. I'll very much like to return the favor.

A silver lining after a tough couple games: the Red Sox have faced the 7th most difficult schedule in MLB so far, opponents have a .542 winning percent in non Red Sox games. They also rate 7th in ESPN’s RPI.
Basically, they’ve faced a good slate so far, though it doesn’t get all that much easier (based only on 2024 record) at all this month.

Looks like we avoid Jared Jones which is nice. (for the team, not as a fan! ) I'm seeing a Quinn Priester tonight for them, 7.74 ERA in 50 IP last year, first 2024 innings in MLB. Impressive K numbers in AAA (20 in 13.2 IP) this year, maybe he changed something.

It's kinda funny, because before the season this seemed like it this might have been one of the easier months. But Cleveland & the Pirates have been good, Baltimore is Baltimore, and even the A's (8-11) and Angels (9-10) have been semi-competent instead of just plain bad.

I really appreciate that they are basing it on "non-red sox games" which is the right way to do this. Otherwise bad teams face artificially tougher schedules... That said, the Sox are 9-4 vs AL West and 1-6 vs the others. SSS but like, they've played well against the lesser teams on the schedule, which is going to probably equate to a .500 record. Huh, go figure!

Bobby's gotta be due right? right? Heck yeah - his wOBA is .035 but his xwOBA is way up at .115. He's been very unlucky.

We leaned on this one a lot through last year’s .500 April, but then teams like PIT and LAA ended up being lousy by year’s end

Duran Abreu Refsnyder Casas Wong Yoshida Dalbec Valdez Rafaela SS!!! I take it we are expecting a LH opener? Valdez over Reyes against a regular LH starter would be curious. EDIT: lol literally just saw Ref third and assumed it’s a lefty starter. Whoops

On one hand the hot start could have been a fluke, on the other maybe something changed and they actually were good at the start I can see either side.

Bobby's gotta be due right? right? Including AAA, Bobby is 1/26 for .038 BA, and the 1 is a AAA HR. If Bobby goes 0/1, he will be 0/20 in the MLB passing Travis Shaw’s last Red Sox stint for futility….. but he is overdue.

On one hand the hot start could have been a fluke, on the other maybe something changed and they actually were good at the start I can see either side. I’m just not sure it means anything at all. Like, the implication of strength of schedule is that we’ve banked wins against teams that will be difficult for competitors to bank wins against, or that teams we’ve lost to are teams competitors will also often lose to. Team quality isn’t fully established this early on, and it’s not static throughout the season. Teams that have played this version of Houston early on look like they’ve played an easier schedule so far. I don’t know, I think I’d rather have all of the Oakland games left than hitting Houston once reinforcements have arrived, etc

F it I’ll guess Bobby’s first hit will be a single to right field in the second inning

Nice to see Abreu dump one in the cheapies. Hopefully he is on his way back to 2023 form.
