Garza to Rangers.
Good news for us Sox fans. One less guy to blow the farm on. Now just stay away from Peavy unless they give him away.

Lets clear some 40 man spots and get someone like Axford or K Rod to replace Bailey and keep the farm intact. Workman and Britton could be as good as any pen arm on the market to. We're talking about 15-25 innings lets not give up to much.

Wow, so the final deal is for Olt, Edwards, Grimm, and a PTBNL for Garza. That's a royal fleecing by Theo.

How about this guy in the Sox pen? Wouldn't cost a prospect.

It seems to me when all is said and done Tampa, Boston, Baltimore, Oakland, and Texas will by vying for the remaining four spots in the post-season with either Detroit (very most likely) or Cleveland (Tito will have to work a miracle there given that Detroit's a much more talented team). Garza helps increase Texas's chance to either win the division or put up a tough pitcher during a 1 game playoff which might be the Red Sox fate. This doesn't mean that I don't agree with you as far as being happy the Sox didn't try to decimate their system to get Garza. I'm glad the Sox still are sitting on the pitching stash - with De La Rosa and Webster struggling mightily to throw strikes, they'll need every good arm they can keep. And yes, I agree this will weaken Texas in the future unless they resign Garza after the season, but it most certainly with strengthen their rotation this season with Darvish, Garza, and Holland fronting the rotation. I think good news for Sox fans would have been if Garza had been dealt to Arizona or some NL team instead.

If the Sox want to keep their farm system intact, they could spend big $ on Gonzalez and take a flier on either Wilson and/or Madson. The risk is that these guys aren't effective and it costs $, but I think it's a better option than overpaying for Peavy or Norris or even Ervin Santana. I do think they'll wind up going after Crain or K-Rod, though.

If we don't sell now on Iglesias we will regret it. Bogaerts will be ready soon and I am fine with Bogaerts, Drew and WMB taking the left side of the infield for the rest of the year. There's no way I move Bogaerts off of SS for Iglesias, which in turn could make WMB/Cecchini move positions. Iggy is crashing down to earth and while he's capable of starting, we have way too many players who are better than him. Sell high.

Seeing the Garza trade and how much value Chicago received in return I couldn't help but look to next season. Clearly the team is in no position both win/loss wise and depth wise to move a pitcher this season but assuming Boston picks up Lester's 13 mil option for 2014 the team will have both Lester and Dempster as free agents after the 14 season. Theoretically Lackey as well if his vesting option doesn't kick in. You wonder if either or both is throwing well next season and: Boston is either struggling (hope not); one or more of the young kids are ready to step up (more likely); or the team adds a free agent arm over the off season, what the team could get for moving one at the deadline. Clearly it depends on the depth of available arms next season which is relatively week this season and how teams views their value vs. Garza's but it could exceed a 1st round supplemental for losing a player with a qualifying offer.

Dave Cameron listed him as one of the 26 players that missed in his top 50 trade value. A team like Pitts, STL or Cincy would be interest but we would have to upgrade 3B in my mind if we dealt him.

Wonder if San Diego bites on Iglesias for Headley. Xander and Headley makes a nice left side of the infield

Iggy is crashing down to earth and while he's capable of starting, we have way too many players who are better than him. Sell high. Good point and I'm sure the team is mulling it over. Unfortunately it seems the time to sell high on Iglesias has passed. The problem the team faces is a logjam at short and third coupled with poor timing. Bogaerts' highest value is at shortstop, but he is blocked defensively by Iglesias. His next highest value is at third, but he's blocked defensively by Middlebrooks. Bogaerts has the arm to be a good or better rightfielder which has significant value in Fenway. That may be his best fit within the current crop of players although it's not his maximum value. Moving Iglesias now may well be the best play if not for the timing. Bogaerts is not ready for the Show. WMB is lost right now. There's no one else to play third. A trade like this signals the RS are stepping back from contending for the WS this season. Or it necessitates bringing in Young or Ramirez or some other MLB 3b. There are multiple ways this can play out, which is why it's so fun to talk about. The team may have a plan but ultimately the players will decide via their performance. For the trade Iggy now camp, Jose is not cooperating. Bogaerts and Iglesias are both very special, but very different players. Unfortunately, to get the absolute most out of each of them they cannot play on the same team. But bad timing will push this decision off until the winter or next season.

How would you proceed? Trade for Peavy who is also under contract in 2014 or Erving Santana once KC admits they're out of it (8 games behind Detroit, 10 behind in the wild card)? I would assume Peavy should cost more because of the extra year of control.
I'm really interested in Santana as a solid innings eater who can post a sub 4 era. Would slot great into the Workman position now. Question also is how does the rotation shake out when Buchholz would come back between Buchholz, Lackey, Lester, Dempster, Doubront and Santana in this scenario (Or a Peavy scenario for that matter). Lackey and Doubront have been two of the best starters other than Buchholz to this point.

If the Red Sox trade for a starter and Buchholz comes back healthy, I think the move is Dempster to the bullpen. He'd probably be the worst starting pitcher in the rotation and has past bullpen experience. Plus, he'd probably complain less about it than Lester.

"[the white sox] turned down a deal involving pitcher Carlos Martinez, the Cardinals third-highest rated prospect, for shortstop Alexei Ramirez, according to a scouting source." my.chicagotribune.com/#section/-1/article/p2p-76773665/I would happily trade them Drew for Martinez and take my chances on Bogaerts/Iglesias the rest of the year.

Ramirez is signed through 2015 with a 2016 option at reasonable rates, though.

Ramirez is signed through 2015 with a 2016 option at reasonable rates, though. Alexei Ramirez has been the last couple of seasons basically a defense only shortstop, and will be making ten million a year for the next couple of seasons. I don't think the Cards would accept Drew for Martinez, but I have no idea why they would want Alexei Ramirez.

The article does say something to the effect of "as part of a larger deal"-- maybe the Cardinals would also be receiving Peavy or relievers.

Isn't Ramirez, even in apparent decline this year and last, an average or above average shortstop for offense, and plays good defense? He also was well above average the four previous years. He's also better on O and D than what they have, isn't he?
