I just have a horrible feeling that they picked Ball just because he is tall, and that reminded him of Randy Johnson, even though that doesn't really make sense.

Great pick. You guys wanted upside, and talent and you certainly got it! I have no idea why you are suggesting this would be under slot pick... You could have picked Bickford for that

I can't believe it. Tops out at 93. Couldn't we have gotten that with the 45 pick? What is so special there? Athletic but also extremely skinny. I've heard he has great intangibles and is a high upside pick potentially as he fills out but how do they pull the trigger on him with this slot? I've heard 94, but regardless, that's not the best way to judge (and dismiss) a pick. I know it's surprising, but don't get too down on it. He has good control and seems like a great kid. It just seems like we could have done better. Agreed that mph is not everything and he probably does add some velocity over time. At least he has a chance of being a mega stud. He probably does add some pounds and strength. It is an extremely risky pick, IMO, but with tons of upside. Got to give him credit for that. It's just more risky than I would like. They obviously rolled the dice big time.

I get that there is a lot is disappointment with Stewart and Frazier off the board by time the Red Sox pick came up. However, they must have had Ball as the best available on their draft board at that point. Ball appears to have a significant ceiling which is what most of this board wanted to see the Red Sox draft ths year. Ball is a potential #1 starter. Imagine a rotation of Buccholz, Ball , Webster,Ranuafo and Barnes in 4 years. Pretty solid.

Law's grades for Ball are not impressive: Fastball: 55/55 FB Movement:50/50 Command:35/50 Curveball: 40/50 The Red Sox better have more hope for that Curveball and change up developing. Do yourself a favor.. go back and look at Keith Law's predraft rankings from the last 4 years.. Shocking at how bad he missed on superstars.. had Chris Sale in like the 30s

I can't believe you complained about an 18 year old topping out at 93. Geez. Ya think he might get a little stronger? With the #7 pick. Hell yeah. It's risky.

BC Presser:
Reporter: Ben, why did you select Ball?
BC: our scouting staff likes him a lot. We were surprised he fell to us at 7.

What kills me the most is that the Yanks have a chance to take 3 guys that are about as exciting as Ball....

Well it looks like the board did blow up.

Wow. Meadows & Shipley right there too. Just wow. Let's put it this way: Was it worth all the months of buildup and analysis, and all the angst of the past several days, largely centered around Frazier, for the selection of Ball at #7? ? Isn't all this drama really overblown? To my mind, the real benefit of the Sox's draft status this year may be getting earlier picks in all of the remaining rounds, where they might capture guys they would have barely missed out on in other years. The benefits of an early selection can hopefully be leveraged throughout the ENTIRE draft. Maybe this year it will be the Sox grabbing people that will frustrate other teams hoping that certain players would fall to them later on.

I am so disapointed about no Stewart or Frazier. That is part of it. I love them taking a pitcher though. Gotta think they see him as a pitcher.
