Happy Manuel Margot day! Sneak preview of the podcast episode getting released today: his new nickname shall be Manny being Margot. Certainly a guy to be excited about! I was hoping he was placed in Greenville earlier, but Lowell should be a good test for him. Can't wait for all affiliates to be playing everyday. June 21st seems a long time coming.

Cant wait to get down to Lowell this summer for a few games, hopefully with some recent draftees also added to the roster potentially. Sorry, caught myself looking at the 2014 roster by mistake.

Pitchers duel so far. Gomez has struck out 6 of the 10 batters he's faced, allowing only one batter to reach on a double. Phillips is holding his own for the Tigers, allowing only two singles to the Spinners 8-9 hitters, and K'ing 4.
Meanwhile in AAA, Rubby made it through 5.1 IP before being removed, which is good for him, but his 5 K's were matched with 5 BB's. If only he can learn to harness that control a little better - We know that where he's at now, the walks and high pitch counts are going to kill his ability to be successful in the majors, as a starter at least. HR #14 for Mr. Brentz, 4-0 PawSox.

Brentz with his 14th home run (in his 60th game). He leads the organization in homers.

Brentz with his 14th home run (in his 60th game). He leads the organization in homers. For some reason, this reminded me of something random I realized yesterday: Marlon Byrd has more homers (11) than anyone on the Red Sox right now, besides Ortiz. The same Marlon Byrd who was dead last in ISO in the league when he was on the Sox last year.

Is Brentz a keeper or trade bait in a package? His k rate is still high, about 25%, and does not walk much except back to the bench when he ks. Would some team be attracted to his power and be willing to take a chance if he was package with some others?

Would some team be attracted to his power and be willing to take a chance if he was package with some others? I don't see a long-term future for him on the Sox. Hopefully his power display at AAA raises eyebrows from other organizations and we can get a minor chip back to help out the club at some point. He's a talented guy, but I see him as a .240-.260, .300 OBP guy who could hit 25 homers over a full season, with average defense and a cannon in an outfield corner. He's kind of like Josh Reddick in that his discipline and issues with breaking balls may hold him back from consistently contributing in a major league lineup. It's still early, and I don't want to sound like I'm writing him off while he's doing well at AAA, but even this year his BB/KK numbers scare me way more than his power excites me.

Aren't he and Middlebrooks kind of the same? Or Brentz is a poor man's Middlebrooks? Or something?

Would some team be attracted to his power and be willing to take a chance if he was package with some others? I think he'll get another year to see how (if) he makes adjustments. OF depth: BOS - Nava (S), Ellsbury (L), Victorino (R), Carp (L), Gomes (R) (all are signed/controlled for 2014, excluding Ellsbury who is not expected back and should be replaced by Bradley)PAW - JHaze (L), Bradley (L), Brentz (R), Snyder (R), Maier (L), Hassan (R) (other than Bradley and Brentz, no obvious full-time major leaguers)POR - Linares (R), Hissey (L), Wilkerson (R), Vitek (R), Thomas (R) (not much here, frankly)SAL - Jacobs (R), Ramos (S), De La Cruz (L), Sanchez (R) (Ramos has potential but is far away; not a lot here either) Other than Bradley and Brentz, there is not much OF potential in full-season ball. Jacobs and De La Cruz have been disappointing. Margot may be the next closest OF prospect below AAA.

Phillies could use a RHH power bat for the future like Brentz and don't value walks.

Aren't he and Middlebrooks kind of the same? Or Brentz is a poor man's Middlebrooks? Or something? Maybe, but it's too early to tell. I haven't seen Brentz much live, so I'm going primarily by his numbers and scouting reports. But, and I know it gets a little tougher to accept everyday, even Middlebrooks can't be completely judged yet, although we're getting close to knowing what he is. Middlebrooks K% seems like a product of pathetic plate discipline, but he's K'd at pretty consistently high rates (25-30%) throughout his whole professional career. He's good at swatting the ball around when it's in the strike zone, but unless he can learn how to identify strikes, he's going never going to hit well in the league. Unfortunately, strikeout, contact, and walk rates stabilize rather quickly, so it's tough to believe we're going to see Middlebrooks break out of a "funk," as instead it's something more like a "radical change" that's needed. Similar data isn't available on Brentz, but his K% and BB% certainly are reminiscent of Middlebrooks. I don't know enough about his natural plate discipline to make direct comparisons - I know Brentz has a lot of work to do, and I don't imagine he's too great at picking up good RHP's breaking balls, but I don't know if he's going to be like Middlebrooks hacking at every pitch, fastball or breaking ball or whatever, no matter what the location.

Spinners got 15 of their 27 outs on K's. Only one walk, from our boy Chris Carpenter (who I had no idea was even on their roster). Not any offense really, as the Spinners scraped out the entirety of their offense from the bottom 2 guys going 2 for 4 each.
As for my Middlebrooks post above, I want to reiterate that I'm not fully giving up on him. Sadly, his problems aren't the type we can permit him to work out at the major league level when we clearly have superior options. For his own best interest, I'm not sure playing only half the time will let him find a groove or make some sound adjustments either, and the minors may be the best thing for him. It'd be temporary, but remember, he's still just a kid at 24-years of age.

They could easily add Holt to be the utility guy, and then bring WMB up if he regains his swagger or we have an injury. Still, I'd give him another two weeks before a decision is made.
