Super news! Garin is now a step closer to Beantown. Portland, with Xander promoted, was not as fun to follow..........now it will be.

Possibly the least surprising promotion ever. Good stuff.
My guess at a typical Portland 5-game rotation now with the corner infielders:
Cecchini: 4 at 3B, 1 at DH or off Almanzar: 1 at 3B, 2 at 1B, 2 at DH or off Shaw: 3 at 1B, 2 at DH or off
As for Salem, would be nice if the countermove was activating Coyle. Don't count on another promotion. If Coyle's not ready, they'll activate Gedman from phantom DL. I could also see Matty Johnson getting sent down from Portland, now that the outfielders aren't going to be using DH anymore. Counting Vitek, there are 6 outfielders in Portland, which was less of a problem when they could DH every game. Cherington said that Bard could get activated next week, so that could be the countermove.

Clearly a cynical ploy by the Red Sox to boost pageviews on Sea Dogs box scores (that's where the real money is, of course). It's Matt Barnes in Greenville all over again...

There really are no obvious promotions and I don't think the Sox should try to force a promotion if the players aren't deserving. If the Red Sox want to be ultra-agressive they could promote Mookie Betts then shuffle Natoli/Renfroe around the diamond, but I really doubt he will get the call. Mario Martinez (who is 23) might also be a fit.

I asked Garin on Tueday at the All Star Game as he was signing my sons jersey along with one for me if he was getting promotoed Wednesday or Thursday. He responsed with a big smile and said "I am not Garin he is and pointed at Blake. He laughed and said just taking it one game at a time. Just trying to continue to produce and the rest will take care of itself." He has a good attitude.

I would like to see Cecchini get as many reps as possible at 3B. One possible way to insure he does that is to put Almanzar at 3B in Pawtucket. With every passing day it becomes obvious that the Red Sox can't count on Will Middlebrooks being the solution at 3B. Since there are no obvious solutions to this problem, the Red Sox would be wise to consider as many potential solutions as possible. Putting Almanzar at 3B in Pawtucket makes him a possible solution.

Just asking, Is there any way Garin can make it to Paw? I am just throwing it out there.
The next pitcher would it be Owens or Ranaudo? Maybe both!

Great for Cecchinni. This will be a good test. Lets hope he adjusts to Portland in the same manner that Bogaerts did.

Excellent, makes up for not getting to see Xander in Manchester at the end of the month!

Almanzar is not ready for Pawtucket. I'll be very, very surprised if he's promoted. Cherry picking a bit, but consider that he is only 5 months older than Cecchini and is younger than Deven Marrero and Christian Vazquez.

I'd almost think Holt/Snyder would be better 3B depth options than Almanzar. Need to hear better reports on his defense. I'm surprisingly not worried about the left infield right now... stuff will shake out for next year, no way Almanzar is a realistic option for this year.
But it is nice to see Garin jump to AA, and accelerate his timetable a couple months if he does well. Much like Xander/JBJ pushing out of Salem early, it'll put him in line for a quicker promotion at AA, exposure to correct flaws for next season, and become MLB depth sooner.
Amazing at the similarities between Garin and JBJ in age (1 day apart at that level) and stats .350/.469/.547 for Garin and .359/.480/.526 for JBJ. If Garin can close the season with quality numbers at AA (and more importantly, staying healthy), is he a top 50 guy? FWIW JBJ was 54th on FanGraphs and 29th on MLB (Xander was 5th/19th).

Could you elaborate? I understand he comes from a raw place and still probably looks raw on occasion. But something has to be done at 3B at the major league level. Out of all the possible options, Almanzar at least has raw power that could help the major league team.
The idea comes out of the fact that their options at this point are very poor.

I dont see Almanzar being a better hitter than WMB in the next year, and WMB is a superior fielder.
Also, I thought Middlebrooks adjusted to his slumps pretty well last year, I'm not giving up on him, though he may need a stay at AAA to help him out.

If you want raw power from your third baseman, you might consider Will Middlebrooks. He also has a pretty good glove. And I'm willing to bet Cecchini will succeed at the major league level before Almanzar does. If we wanted Cecchini to play at 3B every day, Almanzar could play 1B + LF/DH; it seems unlikely that he'll really end up as a third baseman. But even if Cecchini DHs some, he could take fielding drills which could be more helpful than 9 innings of game experience.

Middlebrooks looks completely lost at the plate and we are getting to the point where something else needs to be tried. The problem is that the Red Sox don't have an obvious back up plan. I am not saying that they should put Almanzar in the majors tomorrow. Just put him in AAA where there are pitchers who know what they are doing and see if he can handle it. If he can, maybe he can help the major league club.
I know this is a prospect site but we are trying to win a pennant here. Let's consider the possibility that Almanzar might be a better major league option than a 26 year old journeyman who before this year failed to crack a .740 OPS in three AAA seasons.

Out of all the possible options, Almanzar at least has raw power that could help the major league team. The idea comes out of the fact that their options at this point are very poor. Because a) he's not a good third baseman, and b) he's still working on his approach, improved as it might be. And as for the Major League level, as others have said, there's nothing he'd do better than Middlebrooks at this point. EDIT: Responding to your above post, I'm not convinced he'd be a better option than Holt. From what I've heard, Snyder is pretty rough there. I think you're underestimating just how much work Almanzar still has to do. It's not about babying his development. It's that he's not a realistic option in the majors this year. EDIT2: By the way, are you forgetting about Bogaerts? Why on earth would you try Almanzar in the majors before him?

I am not ready to give up on him either but I am getting close. His plate discipline and overall approach has always been an issue and you have to wonder if it's ever going to good enough for him to be an effective major leaguer.
It's not like the team has a young Mike Schmidt sitting in AAA so perhaps the best option is to throw lots of options against the wall and see what sticks.

If that's true then he will fail at AAA. I don't see how that would be the end of the world. But perhaps he shows something at AAA, then you have one more potential solution.
I am not at all. The Red Sox should definitely be looking at him as option as well and I am sure they are. However Bogarts has been in AAA only a few days and is still very young. I think he has good potential to be a solution, but I am not ready to put all my eggs in his basket.
Based on the information we have today I would agree. Bogarts is a better potential solution to the major league 3B problem. However six weeks of play by both players in AAA could change that equation.
My preferred solution would be to trade for Aramis Ramirez, but that may not be possible or could be cost prohibitive. In which case, the Red Sox should have as many potential backup plans as possible.

No way is Almanzar ready for Pawtucket at 3rdbase..... BUT
Almanzar is ready for a fulltime gig at 1stbase in Portland. I would split time between Shaw and Almanzar at 1st while the other DH's.
Cecchini should and in my opinion WILL be the everyday 3rdbaseman. If he needs time off here or there then Almanzar can slide to 3rd. Almanzar's defense is a negative at third. It could be a positive at first if he is given the job full time and he works on it. He has the size and he has the power.
I know Shaw has been heating up a bit, but I think his cieling is probably a AAAA type, you don't worry about two youngsters who could develop into MLB starters for a AAAA player.

Seems like there is a split on him. Some seem to agree with you and think that he's a AAAA player while others think that he can help a major league team. BABIP is .234 FWIW but I don't know if that's because he's not squaring the ball up or just bad luck.
This is another case where the Red Sox don't have a great long-term solution at the position so the need to try to find a lot of them.

Mike Carp is your long term solution at 1st base , but I'd groom Almanzar.
