A's can simply offer Hill a qualifying offer, no? And based on current crop of FA SP, Hill no doubt will turn it down, looking for 2-3 year deal instead. For that reason, wouldn't the Athletics want a player equal to the compensation pick?

His agent is highly motivated to get the player signed. There's no guarantee that the agent will be retained for next year's draft.
If he's my son, I'd tell the agent get the best deal but don't play chicken with $4M offer on the table. Period.

If I'm 17 years old.....I'd take $3M now rather than wait a year and get $4M.......just saying.....I can get my brand new vet today. lol

Ortiz will be replaced via FA signing. We'll have the money to sign a power bat. There's no need to give up highly rated prospects during 2016. I'm completely opposed to trading for a heavy money rental for 2016 and beyond. We are paying heavily for Ben's mistake on Hanley/Pablo signings. Tread carefully Mr. DD.
Pitching will be difficult. I go back and forth on this. But Sox will need to find several relief pitchers for 2017. I'm going to assume E Rod will be back to his old self and improve on his off speed pitches. Then, we just need #5 starter. One thing people always talk about and it's always true, you can't have enough pitching....exhibit A, 2016 Red Sox.

Predicting future is inexact science at best. Hell we couldn't even project 2015 performances for Sandoval and Ramirez. We gave the two 4/5 year deals.
I simply rather Red Sox pay out the three arbitration years and then make the best offer come FA time. Obviously you can give qualifying offer so that you get SOMETHING in return.
How many once and life time players are there anyway. This is why the focus has to be developing players internally. Sox organization has to do a better job developing pitchers. Pay as you go maybe the best policy.
Assuming Ortiz goes through with his planned retirement, we will save close to $40M between Ortiz, Buchholtz and Koji.
We are stuck with Price and Porcello for at least two and three years. Wright will become an inning eater. Rodriguez at worst should be our 4/5th starting assuming he becomes healthy.
I just hope we don't go on another spending binge and get stuck with Craig/Sandoval/Ramirez size headaches.

I'd like to see a split between 'quality' start stat line vs non quality start stats.
Miley as an example is 4.00 ERA pitcher on a consistent basis whereas Eduardo tend to fluctuate. He will eventually figure out how to minimize blown games. His ceiling is much higher than Rubby dee la Rosa in my opinion.
See what he can do next year. I think he will continue to improve.
