Sox will not bring in $10M to luxury tax calculation by putting Castillo back on 40 man roster.

With today's signings, I have the payroll at ~ $165, though I might be missing someone/thing (are they still paying something for Crawford?) Now that doesn't include the total for benefits (is that ~ 12m?) Still seems like a pretty safe distance from $189, not sure why they couldn't have afforded Plouffe Go to Cot's Basebaseball.....it has very good 40 man projected luxury tax payroll.....You numbers are low..

They wanted a left handed bat along with solid defense. They are approaching 2017 from run prevention perspective to offset Ortiz retiring.

You acquire Sale exactly because hitting can go south quickly, especially during playoffs against good pitching. No one has mention return of Carson Smith either. He may not be ready at beginning but surely he'll contribute after the All Star Game. We'll also get full year of Beni in left field.
Someone mentioned that 37 games were started by someone not named Porcello, Price, E Rod, Wright and Pom last year. Sale will be taking 32-35 of those starts. Again, I ask, how can we not be better?

With 7 starting pitchers, I would have given up Clay for NOTHING in return. We got a $13.5M gift. Which by the way pays for the three players we acquired, Sale,Thornburg and Moreland.

It's difficult for me to believe we're going to be a bad team in 2020's because of our depleted farm.
We still have a $200M budget. We'll have enough pieces to compete. It maybe difficult to sign the entire group consisting of Porcello, Sale, Xander, Betts and Bradley Jr. But
we'll have close to $90M coming off the books after 2019. (Hanley, Pablo, Porcello, Sale, Xander). Surely we'll sign two out of Porcello, Sale and Xander.

You're an idiot if you extend Beni when he's under team control for next 6 years. He's going to earn league minimum for next 3 years. We are pushed up vs the luxury tax limit right now. Why complicate things. Xander, Bradley Jr, Sale, Porcello, then Betts and Bradly must be addressed before Beni.

We always need to pay attention to what DD is saying or implying.
Pomeranz is his guy. A lefty, 6-6 (?, please don't call me out for making this up, I'm pretty sure he's 6-4 plus), someone HE ACQUIRED. For anyone to say that DD is marketing wrong guy doesn't understand how this works.

No way DD trades Pomeranz. We traded away one of our top pitching prospects to acquire him. He also came with couple of years of team control. He certainly will be paid less than that Clay's $13M in 2017.
It's human nature for new executive to put his mark on his new employer. Otherwise, why did you get the job in first place?
DD owns Pomeranz trade. Clay B is not his guy. He picked up the option only as insurance. He's not so stupid as to open himself up for criticism for trading away Pomeranz. Ain't happening.

What would be the ceiling for him in terms of # of pitches next year? 100-120? Do you call him up late to just pitch in relief?

Moncada, Devers, JBJ and E Rod? Are you kidding me? That's 3 above average position players and future #2 starting pitcher. No way I'm giving up on E Rod. He's still only 23. His injury this spring really set him back this year.

DD usually takes the straight, simple approach to resolving conflicts. He does not like complications. Why wouldn't he pay $110M for 5 years to sign EE? It's not much more than what Cherington gave Pablo. And EE will provide Sox with power. My dream line up C Swihart 1B Hanley 2B Pedey 3B Moncada SS Xander LF Beni CF Bradley RF Betts DH Sir Edward Devers waiting on the wings Yeah, and where does Devers fit in in your scenario if he's "waiting in the wings"?? Devers is at least couple of years away...Hanley will be gone in 3 years, Bradley maybe unsignable or trade bait. There's room in this line up for Devers.

$148M includes $20M+ in dead money. Projected luxury tax may reach as high as $209M. We have money to sign Encarnacion.

There's been hidden costs to the Sox for hanging on to Clay.
We had to bring in Peavy one year due mainly to Clay's injury. Traded away a good shortstop. We had to bring in Pomeranz this year, due in large part to Clay's horrendous season, especially when you factor in $13M. At least Rodriquez has an injury excuse and Kelly is cheap.
We can't count on him.
A coach has to be able to trust a player. Trust takes form in several ways. Clay simply can't be counted on . Wait, only thing you can count on is that his good streaks will end either due to injury or due to lack of execution. He can't be trusted.

Pomeranz to arrive on Saturday...tough to pitch on Sunday with his travel schedule. I think it makes sense to start him off against a team he's familiar with. Obviously it goes both ways.
