Are the results finalized? Summary? How did we do vis a vis? For some reason I keep getting email reports that the Yankees again signed the cream...this year the new Wander....hope it's not true. Maybe they threw big bucks at very top rated guys while we spread $ around hoping that quantity will out produce the top guys? Are we on par with the Yankees when it comes to scouting/finding/signing top talents or are we down the competitive list? And we finally have our first, "They don't spend on IFA guys" complaint of the year! Thanks for coming out everyone. Same time next year? Pathetic personal attack towards Sarasoxer.. He sees the kids 1st hand who manage to make it past the DSL league a LOT faster than most everyone else here does and was just asking a simple question, not asking for some knucklehead to show how non brilliant they are.. Hope u and Steve from Bradenton doing ok Sarasoxer.. One day we'll all get together for a game somewhere close, or down at the Fort.

So what it's turning into is a basic money grab by adding the additional playoff teams as a way to cajole certain ones to start spending more, rather than putting pen to paper with a number all must spend each year regardless. That is my 2c.
Understand the union wants more money for it's clients, spreading out the number of available suitors is the intelligent way, but IMO forcing each and every team to spend a certain amount, or lose a % of say.. national TV revenue, which is shared, would be a better way than watering down the sport into a nothingness that has become the nba.

I always hear the term revenue sharing, like it's some fix all term for what is wrong, but IMO it's not. The problem is 10 or so teams just don't spend on salary for players and the salary cap in itself holds them down further by constantly being haggled over at being as low as possible each and every period. Why the MLBPA doesn't just demand a salary floor of 100m-ish area and either keeping the cap at 210m area, even raising it and letting the owners squabble among themselves if some want to support the ones crying poor is beyond me. I agree. MLBPA determining how the owners should split revenue isn't the best way to go, and likely pisses off the owners. Using other systems to force them to figure it out is the better way to go. That's always been my point. Negotiations are fine, but cannot have any union, or group of employees telling the brass how to split up profits, that is for them to do in a *fair* and *equitable* way. Why a group of 30 separate owners allows 1/3 (or less) to dictate terms every time bargaining comes up to me always drives me crazy and a reason thought initially that a Cohen brought into the group would stir some anger up. No need for these stoppages bending to those less than 1/3 group. Imagine myself if those never changing teams were financially supported more than they already are that the whining would still continue.

That free agency proposal would grant an extra year of freedom to a pretty small number of players. In a vacuum, it's a mild change to the system. But the owners are putting their foot down saying this is something you can't touch. If the players win this time, then they'll likely look for further gains the next time around. On the other hand, the owners immediately show some flexibility on the luxury tax number, even though their actual offer is a tiny increase. if the players don't fight over revenue sharing, then I don't see a huge gap to overcome for both sides. Maybe the players demand a small foothold on the free agency issue - free agency at 6 years or 5 years and 30.5 years old - and maybe the owners give it to them and resolve to fight further encroachment.

I hope they're in the trade market now for a starter. The free agency market for starters getting thin and the remaining options are less appealing by the day. The dollars goes up with teams getting more desperate to be the last team seated at the table with no partner. The Sox have trade chips. Jeter Downs and potentially Duran. I'd add dalbec to that list and for the right pitcher guys in the 10-20 range as a sweetener. Trade for someone and sign a guy like Michael Pineda. Pineda or a Rich Hill type guy ur not entirely sure about giving more than 80-100 innings and roll with either Houck/whitlock as the other guy, then Seabold/Crawford pick up some starts and of course they will sign another reclamation project-2. Bloom is good at that. Agreed 100% on trying to move Dalbec as the main chip for "some" mid rotation starter before his warts become more exploited. Sell as high as they can, if their is one on him regardless of late July-sept.

Maybe another way of looking at this is the Sox have more confidence in Houck and Whitlock taking the next step and being solid rotation pieces. If this was one of many other teams with lower expectations and budgets those 2 would already be penciled into the rotations right. I for one have been pushing for them to stay in the pens, maybe that isn't what the Sox have in mind. They are both 26 next season and have already proven they can get major league hitters out so maybe Chaim and crew see them as ready to be main stays in the rotation. I definitely think both are penciled into the rotation. I guess it's now Eovaldi/Sale/FA tbd/Whitlock/Houck as the starting 5. I'd guess Bloom signs Matz? Then he finds two guys in the bargain bin to replace Perez and Richards as "depth options" and Seabold and Crawford are further depth starting the season in AAA. 2 front end guys in Sale and Eovaldi for next year, it would have been equivalent of paying a mid-back end guy 18m+ long term, which isn't a good idea. More along thought lines of signing/trading for another SP if they go that way, or moving Houck/Whitlock into the rotation and attempting to sign Eovaldi, who has better "stuff" all the way around to a 3-4y extension, which could probably be done in the same 18-20m area. Been onboard the Matz train as for probable fairly reasonable FA's this year, like was on the Taijuan Walker one for possible undervalued guys last year.

I hope at least they’ve given him the F-18. The F-35 is a POS boondoggle and buggier than a new Microsoft update. Me thinks it's quality testing in general and can give a big example from when I was in the USN late70's-early 80's, both active and USNR.. 1st ship was on was an ancient, wooden hulled minesweeper built during the Korean war. It was nothing for amenities.. Water distillers always went on the blink, which meant no showers,, but equipment in our area always it seemed worked.. IOW.. No yellow/red tags fastened to them for you guys who know what I mean and were in the service. One of the reasons got out, was last ship was on was this almost new, Sub tender named USS Frank Cable which it seemed half our com equipment had tags constantly attached to it and the ship just was never able to head to sea because of various issues. Combine that, 2 FULL captains crawling about.. Nothing like a small ship where knew 1st names of every man on board.. Like the old 'sweeper.. Anyway.. New ship, nothing seemed to ever work? Forget that career.

Posted an article several days ago regarding everyone's favorite(!) manager Bobby V running for mayor of his hometown Stamford, Conn. Results in this evening and seems as tho, once again the poor sod came up short.. His concession speech apparently began with blaming the media, before finally getting around to congratulating his Dem. opponent winner.. Sound Valentine-esque? Beep You Lose

This one is almost too funny (and deserving). Change team name because of some obscure social pressure because of a few loud voices and not do homework/check if anyone else in same city is using the SAME name you want to use? Expect to get sued. Poor Cleveland

Everyone's favorite ex-Sox manager is running for Mayor of Stamford, Conn. Bobby V for MayorI liked the idea back in 2012 of him being named manager. He was just lost and had a team of vet's set in it's ways not about to change for him. Double whammy.

Been avoiding posting for a bit, but what have mostly seen from this team last 2 months? It's 1978 all over. 10g lead at the AS break and bye-bye. Dad and I were in box seats on 3b side of NY dugout side. Rainy like weather, did rain in one of the games that 4g september series vs them when Sox were swept out the door in the crucial series at home. Dismal play, lackluster looking team, rookie pitcher thrown out there 1 game (bobby sprowl) who had no biz being there for 1st game. That and this 3 gamer a lot alike.
Other old timers may also draw parallels between lackluster garbage played by both teams.

Boy I thought I have seen everything. Called today's world of look everywhere until find something u don't like, then either write facts, or in some cases as we see all the time now.. make them up and write them anyway. All this tells me is need fewer Angel hernandez (blind) umpires calling balls and strikes and kids in school writing about actual problems if they want to go that route, rather than current wokie item of the day awards.

That had me wondering how much international scouting they actually did. They did sign Schoop, but no one the caliber of a Devers or a Bogaerts. It's a long road back for them. The Orioles think International prospects are just a “fad” in MLB. They should fire every single guy in their baseball operations department immediately. Then they should fire all their scouts. Other than drafting Machado, what else have they gotten right over the last 15 years? Just an unacceptable display from that organization. Angelos and son. maybe too early to judge the kid, but we'll see, definately not the Hoffberger's, which owned them from their beginning to like early 80's if remember correct. They were known to hire good baseball people to scour the country for talent, even tho the team didn't pay MLB talent they had much.. jim palmer was vocal at times about this until getting a contract close to value..once again if memory serves..

That would be the Albert Belle affect. He spent big on him and he was a psycho, sucked and got hurt so they wasted a ton of money and he hasn't spent any money since. Unless you want to include Chris Davis which once again was a big mistake. But that doesn't explain a farm system that should have been loaded. Belle was good in his first year with the Orioles, worth more than what they paid him though his defense had continued to deteriorate. He's very intelligent but he was very volatile, too hard on himself and angry in general. Not that he didn't have reasons to be, but his reactions were often over the top. So the anger management thing was a real problem. That said, he induced real fear in pitchers, not unlike Dick Allen. Baltimore's problems go well beyond Belle. Chris Davis' contract resulted in 12 bWAR at a cost of $143M. That does not pan out. Belle is barely a blip on that radar. Can go further than that Norm. let's not forget that for years the O's virtually ignored the INT market for any kind of mid-top end talent. Remember when slotting started and it was the O's until cpl years back trading away all their slots? Can tell everyone 1st hand the FCL team a few years had nothing but BIG latin guys for the most part when we would see them. Guessing they would bottom feed talent looking for guys who could crush the ball, but how much talent have they graduated? Maybe why Angelos Sr is not running the club, along with his age.

It's not just a bad outing, the reports on his stuff aren't glowing: Good velocity but mediocre movement on the heater and the results are kinda of showing. A 23 yo with a 7.6 K's per 9 in AA? Reminds a lot of Teddy Stankiewicz and his straight as an arrow fastball. The reports on his stuff have been more than fine, do you think he’s accidentally jumped up in the rankings this year? Have you listened to the podcast reports on him? He’s not a huge strikeout guy. He doesn’t need to be. He holds his velo, throws a bunch of strikes, has a good slider, 3 at least average pitches, and knows how to pitch. Backend starter type. Teddy didn’t have a pitch like Winck’s slider. He was also less successful at pretty much every level Stanky barely cracked 90mph on his heater also if remember correctly and especially so with Winky this ST with parent club cpl games saw with him, he was sitting mid 90's and thought looked good as a reliever, then I think lots of guys should be/have been converted earlier than they are.

So Kumar does NOT sign with the Mets and will NOT return to Vanderbilt....Is he now a free-agent and able to sign with anyone?? No - he has college eligibility and will be part of the 2022 draft. His best bet this year is to go play pro overseas or maybe in an independent league in the States. My guess is this also, but probably not overseas, here in Indy ball where he will have plenty of rest between games and it will be more of a showcase attempt, then simply shutdown early and wait out the draft. There is a reason Rocker avoided having his elbow checked out and Boras is going to protect it as long as he can until the Rocker autograph is on a contract. I don't expect to see him drafted in the 1st half of the 1st round next year, if even in the 1st round at all. Hiding like this just sends up all sorts of warning flares.

How do they get him on the 40-man roster, especially when they have to clear spaces for Sale and Brasier? Having dealt Chavis, I'd be surprised if they DFA'd Santana from the IL. They didn't add any position-player depth (+ KS, - Chavis). They can probably pass Rosario through waivers, and they can put Mata on the 60-day list, and that covers Sale and Brasier. But it looks like they'd have to also lose Potts on waivers to make room for Robles. Furthermore, to get both Sale and Robles on the active roster, they have to [Edit:] option either Sawamura or Darwinzon, or DFA Rios, who they clearly like and who has been better than MLB average since his first 3 outings for us. No way Rios clears waivers. So it doesn't look like an upgrade.
The only thing that makes sense is if they can DFA him and keep him in the organization ... if he clears waivers, he can declare free agency and they should be able to re-sign him. You'd have to be sure you could do that, though, right?
The weirdest thing? Robles has a 0.77 WPA despite a .351 twOBA. Based on WPA, he'd step in and be our 5th best reliever! Seriously? Another game log I have to scrutinize ...
Might be time to wonder if anyone would claim Groome 5y past his draft date and on his 2nd option year if remember correctly. Not enthralled by what have seen in handful of games by Portland's Hernandez either. Reason believe TB gave him away so cheap this past offseason. Agree on Rosario. he reminds me of a poor man's Lin that was in the system.. What? 10y ago? Except has neither the glove, nor speed he had and Lin only ended up with a few games at the show. Potts also might pass with his poor showing this year and injuries.

10.24 K/9? I can live with that. Good luck Mike, nice guy, terrible hitter. Understand. Where was all this negativity when Middlebrooks and now Dalbec goes up to the plate and swings wildly at everything thrown up there? it's like watching tv and reading the newspaper.. selectivity towards what to ignore and pay attention to. I'll say this about Chavis.. One of the nicest guys talked to his short time with the Sox while with the GCL club.

Sure it doesn't look perfect as he doesn't have any history at 1st base but the Sox just traded for an all star that can mash from the left side for ONE prospect. Can anyone say they would expect the cost to be just 1 lottery ticket? The fit remains to be seen but IMO this is a very good trade. The guy just hit 16 HRs in June so he has the ability to carry a team with his bat, that many in a month doesn't happen often. This move greatly enhances the batting lineup which is exactly what they needed going down the stretch and into the playoffs. I don't think the Sox are done either. Good day. Honestly, I was waiting for the additional names to be listed as part of the deal because one seemed unlikely. However, this is just me being scarred from the DD trades. With him, Schwarber would have cost us Aldo, Bello, Downs and Blaze Jordan as a good faith throw in lol. Agreed. Looked back several times and seen a lot of whining over acquisition cost of a pretty good power hitting rental lefty for a kid who is so far away that anything can happen. The comparison I saw up above thought was kind of hilarious also. He was throwing upper 90's as a teenager stateside for strikes and dominating the GCL. Saw him at the Ft Once, that kid was night and day a better prospect at the time than is Ramirez.

How does it get changed to equally distribute talent then? Are you suggesting the current system equally distributes amateur talent to all 30 teams? I don't see it that way when it awards free picks to so called small market teams and not trying to nit pick issues.
Are you possibly suggesting a just no draft, but possible top limit each team may spend on talent every year and every team has the same amount? That could possibly work, but good luck getting it past probably half of the owners is my 2c.
Chris, one more thing do want to mention tho. Control of a player, even with the reserve clause now gone nearly 50y is still 6y.

I can understand feeling sympathy for Fabian. It's normal to feel that there is some injustice when one side has too much power in a negotiation. The villain here is the draft system itself, which fundamentally exists to strip negotiating power away from players as they enter professional baseball. The Red Sox have done a very normal job of responding to the incentives presented to them. I don't think it's fair to expect them to hand wins to the Baltimore Orioles. Amazing still see the draft system vilified as bad. How many others remember when the Bklyn/LAD and NYY had more talent within their farm systems than several MLB teams on the field, due solely because talent coming out of school wanted to sign with those organizations?

There was a great story linked here years and years ago after Boston drafted UF starter Karsten Whitson in the 11th rd in 2014. He had been drafted by the Pad's 1st rd (9th) in 2011 and turned down like 2m believe the long ago article stated? Anyway.. It was a poker game by his agen and then GM of the Pad's, each expecting the other to fold on their negotiating stance.. neither did, time ran out and Whitson was hurt in college, getting squat, then playing in 4 MiLB games for Boston according to BR.
That article said he was crying uncontrollably after his agent pulled the stunt and for him not telling him to go ahead and take the Pad's offer.. His family didn't come from money and they were working family.
A lesson some drafted kids who don't have the silver spoon might learn from. Possibly someone can dig up the Whitson article linked here??

I never posted about him in a starting role, look up above at the other 2 posts, just that he would be an improvement and better than having 9 relievers, if not for having to due to inefficiency of the back of the pen.
Chavis (as I posted also already) can play a fair 1b, 2b, 3b and somewhat LF. That makes him a power threat to get into say.. 3 games per week perhaps at multiple positions where he isn't an embarrassment.
Completely redundant? come on Chris. Don't be so defensive of every move and situation the Sox make and do. Look at the bench.. Plawecki isn't going to get PH AB's since he's the only other catcher. Renfroe/Cordero are both black holes at the plate (whichever 1 is on the bench). The team is screaming for a viable hitter as a 4th, or replacement to the Cordero/Renfro starter and the other figuring out how to hit and for Renfro, it goes back further than the last time Chavis did.

In 158 plate appearances last year, Chavis hit .212/.259/.377 with 50 strikeouts and 8 walks. He also doesn't have a defensive position. I agree the bench needs to add someone in lieu of a ninth reliever, but there are several better options internally. I'm being harsher than typical but it's not clear to me what Chavis offers. He needs to earn his way back. Can sort of go by ST. yes, it's not an all encompassing tell all, then what is at AAA? Chavis can play 1b,2b,3b and some LF and it's not like ST doesn't, nor hasn't decided who makes a team or not. That argument is pretty moot.

Verdugo slumped at the end of last year, just as Vazquez was picking it up again. Martinez was down all of last season. It's not a matter of "affording". This happens every season and to all players. What's needed is depth, across the lineup and on the bench. Agree there. Problem is there really isn't much of anything on the bench per see, other than gonzalez due to inefficiencies on half the BP and being forced to carry 9 there. If could add someone.. Say Chavis who was a legit threat to the bench it would be a terrific upgrade.
