I am a Drew defender, no doubt, but he's gone. They want Xander to be their SS, I've felt that way for awhile and it seems obvious now. They'll take the draft pick for Drew and move on. Between the trade chips in the system and the starting pitching depth, they will have a lot of options as far as making trades, be it for a 1B or a 3B.

Not sure that with a 13 mil qualifier that Drew would turn that down. Same risk with Peavy, depending upon how he pitches next year.

am i the only one that doesn't think Nava makes the team next year? Bradley and Victorino are probably starting, Brentz and Hassan competing for a role plus I think we either resign Jacoby or make a move for another big name. Nava's numbers have come back to earth and I think both Brentz and Hassan are better hitters. The fact that he kinda sucks defensively and is apparently the worst baserunner ever doesn't really help (I still can't get over Farrel pinch running with Nava of all people, but I felt this way before that).

They definitely have the chips for trades this offseason, beyond the top two obviously. And I'm talking for young controllable players. It's gonna be an interesting off season.

Drew would be stupid to turn down that kind of money. Peavy has a real chance to get a draft pick from.

With Peralta's looming suspension, Drew might even be the best SS on the free agent market. With Iglesias gone, it's pretty much a lock that he gets the QO assuming he stays healthy and productive. I do think the Sox have to be careful about this. Drew does have an injury history which popped up this year, so I am not so sure he will get an offer better than the QO. The Sox can probably go up to $175 next year, but they are already at $118 for next year after the Peavy trade. Yes they might be able to trade Dempster, but they still need at least a corner OF, a C, a 1B, and bullpen help. That's a lot of holes to fill for $60M or so. Even if you assume the Sox would eat $5-7M can they really afford to dig into their ever shrinking budget? It doesn't matter what the market will give Drew, it only matters what he thinks he can get. The QO isn't something a player can stick in his back pocket then go back to. He has to decide prior to testing the market. He's proven his ankle is healthy so he's gonna get a multi year deal which will trump the QO. Think 3/30 vs 1/14... He'll know that's his likely floor and gamble he can get more. No doubt.

Ugh... Bogaerts at #5 is asking a lot. Brentz on a MLB team is asking a lot. Gomes-Carp as the 1B platoon? JBJ being a leadoff hitter? Thinking MB will recover, Nava will be consistent for once, and Papi won't get old? Too many questions, IMO.
I guess that's what it looks like it has to be Picard, but oof that is not a good lineup.

Completely disagree Brentz/Hassan are better hitters. That logic makes Jose Iglesias a future .300 hitter. His track record is not suggestive of it. I don't think Nava is so special, but he's gotta be ahead of those two, who each have options left, anyway.

Nava and Hassan have each played about 250 games at AA/AAA and the numbers are about identical. And Nava is probably a better fielder, and had some more injury circumstances contributing to some down periods.
I'm not getting excited over Jose Iglesias hitting .330 for the Sox this year, and I'm not locking down Hassan for a spot for 4 HRs. I think Nava gets the nod unless he is terrible in Spring training, Hassan as depth when JBJ strains his hamstring in May.

When I first read that I thought you had written "And Hassan is probably a better fielder....injury....etc." which might be more accurate. But there are similarities for sure, aside from age. However Nava is a LHH, Hassan RHH, so I don't think it's necessarily a direct competition. We have Gomes/Nava/Carp/Hassan for the LF/1B slots, with Nava the only LHH and Hassan having options. Bradley Jr. Victorino Pedroia Ortiz Bogaerts 1B/LF acquisition - let's say Morneau/Carp (I would expect one fairly major addition at LF/1B/C) Gomes/Nava Ross/Lavarnway Middlebrooks

Probably needs to be in the trade forum due to too many unknowns. I think a SP gets dealt for a vet at either LF or 1B. You have guys like K Morales and Beltran that could be had for the right cost to fill needs. STL has Matt Adams blocked, maybe SF wants Panda off 3B or give Posey more time at 1B and Belts a buy low. I'd keep an eye on Logan Moerison, Ike Davis too. If its Xander and WMBs on the right side we probably need to acquire a LH hitter or switch. I think Salty resigns and think of Brentz as being anything more than a platoon option.

You can't do something just for the sake of doing something. Starting pitching is set for 2014, between the current starters, minor league guys, and lack of any FA starters worth throwing money at. As for hitters, who do they go after? Here is the FA I know of: McCann, Ellsbury, Cano, Pence, Choo. The only player worth throwing money at is McCann, but someone (Texas?) will over pay for him.

Made of glass, someone will give us some good prospects. Napoli could be gone, we'd need at 1B. There will be plenty to do.

They're not just going to ship Buch out of here. Some pitchers are more durable than others. He may grow out of this, too. But when he's on the mound, he's the best pitcher we have.

They need to make some adds. Probably at 1b, OF and bullpen. I think you're going to see QO's to drew and salty and if they lose Drew will fill from within, and if they lose salty will certainly sign someone.
1b targets via FA: Morneau, Morales, Morse, Konerko
Of targets via FA: Ellsbury, Choo, Beltran, Aoki, Granderson, Hart, Pence
RP: Balfour, Breslow, Crain, Lopez, Mujica, Marmol, Koji, Rodney
Bullpen will be a real interesting story line and of course a trade from the starting depth to fill elsewhere is always possible. I don't like he idea of trading starting depth in the offseason.
The Clay haters need to realize he's more valuable to the Sox for what he's capable of thn what he can bring. Plain and simple. You don't trade a guy like that. Dempster is the only one who I could see them trading, maybe Lester, but that's a long shot. Everyone else is more valuable to te team then what they'd bring back. Dempster in the pen makes too much sense to me.
JrRusso, love the enthusiasm, bu you cannot be serious with Cecchini and/or Brentz in the starting lineup next year. There is zero chance either breaks spring with the team. Brentz is injured again and has had a little bit of a lost year.

I don't get the fascination with Buchholz. Good pitcher when healthy, but that is few and far between.

If teams see the big market, playoff contending, Red Sox trading a cost-controlled top of the rotation starter, they are going to suspect there is something seriously wrong with that pitcher.

That seems unlikely - surely he'd be getting a lot more plate appearances.
