and the Sox go up 2 games. Hey if the next four or five nights could play out like tonight I wouldn't be annoyed with that.

Looks like the Sox are happy to be back at Fenway! Have to like their schedule versus the Rays (who have a West coast swing of their own) going into September. Hopefully the offense can keep it up tomorrow - hoping Xander gets in there.

So - maybe signing Victorino was a good idea after all?

So - maybe signing Victorino was a good idea after all? The moves the front office made during the off-season have worked out, and yes, Victorino is part of that. They built a team that has been relentless offensively. They've also made moves to shore up the pitching as they get near the playoffs. I hope it's enough to carry them to the Division title. They certainly have a lot of options. We've haven't even seen Nava for one at bat since his 3-4 performance, and very little of Carp as good as both have been playing. The contrast between this year's edition, and last year's, couldn't be greater. BC may get strong consideration for exec of the year. He's been that good.

No big salaries being useless or worst yet. Paying them to play somewhere else. I have us with about 83.6m spent on position players that are neck and neck with Detroit for the most runs scored. Haven't sacrificed defense either. That has been good too. c - Salty 4.5m 1b Napoli 12m Guessing when all is said and done 2b Pedey 10m ss Drew 9.5m 3b WMB 500K LF Nava 500k CF Ells 9m rf Victorino 13m dh Ortiz 14m Bench Ross 3.1m Gomes 5m Carp 500k iggy 2m

Napoli finally appears to have woken from his summer slumber. He's 6/13 with 2hr 5 rbi in his last 3 games. I think it's wise to ride him if he's hot. Heck, he's only struck out 3 times in his last 13 ab's too

That makes no sense.

Xander getting the start at 3B tonight against the RHP. My guess is he'll start at SS against either Santiago or Danks this weekend.

How great were the Red Sox moves this offseason? Just take a look at a leaderboard featuring the position players who signed free agent contracts this offseason (h/t Alex Speier). Cherington & co. signed four of the seven best performers on that list, as well as the best free-agent reliever (Uehara). Not perfect (especially the Hanrahan trade, and to a much lesser extent the Dempster signing), but a tremendous job of making the right moves that were not necessarily the most exciting ones. [Unrelated to this post, but check out Zach Greinke as a hitter. .340/.426/.383 with as many strikeouts as walks. He's been worth 1.1 fWAR at the plate already. Wowza.]

That's basically the rating their system gives Andrelton Simmons, and while Victorino is an excellent right fielder, he damn sure isn't Andrelton Simmons. WAR: it's not that great, kids.

That was a heck of a throw by Dustin...
Also, it's ridiculous that Xander isn't hitting 5th.

Lackey has pitched great this year, but he's awful at holding runners on. Saltalamacchia just made a strong, accurate throw down to 2B (one of the few good ones he's uncorked lately), yet Roberts (not the fastest guy in the world) had the base stolen based with a huge lead.

Lackey's move to second isn't any good either, but Salty makes another great throw and gets him at third. Perfect timing, too, cause Machado just hammers the next one over the Monster.
