How valuable was Clay Buchholz, before his injury? (Admittedly, "valuable" factors in some luck in terms of pitching to the score, and is less predictive than a measure of talent. But it's value that wins you games, so this is accurate retrospectively.)
MLB leaders in Win Probability Added per 30 starts (minimum 10), in reverse order for phony dramatic effect:
3.42 Yu Davrish 3.62 Jhoulys Chacin 3.67 Max Scherzer 3.69 Francisco Liriano 3.78 Joe Kelly 3.80 Hiroki Kuroda 3.89 Patrick Corbin 3.95 Jose Fernandez
and the next term in this sequence has got to be about 4.00, right?
5.30 Clayton Kershaw
Utter dominance. In a league by himself. Except for ...
6.88 Clay Buchholz.
That's right; if Buchholz can come back and be half as valuable, he still edges Darvish.

GCL scores two in the first inning. Meyers single, moves to third on a botched pickoff, Rijo RBI single, Peralta RBI double.
Smith with two scoreless innings so far.

2-0 through 4. Smith done after 3; Drehoff pitched the 4th.
Yankees2 starter K'd 10 through 4IP. He's out of the game after 4.

DSL loses 2-1.
GCL wins 3-0 and will face 50-9 GCL Nationals in a best of three series for the Gulf Coast title. Game 1 will be in Viera tomorrow (Sat.) at noon. Game 2 will be in Ft. Myers. Game 3, if needed, will be back in Viera. It's an approx. 3.5 hour bus ride, each way. Let's hope the Netflix queue is stocked.

DSL Sox lose, 2-1, to end their season.
Team caught a tough break, as starter Carlos Garcia was removed during the third at-bat of the game after throwing a wild pitch. Hope it wasn't a Frank Viola situation. Jervis Torrealba came in and gave up an RBI triple and RBI single for the only Ranger runs. Tough loss.

Do fielders turn stupid with chat on the mound or what? Second start in a row where the fielders can't field

No walks is certainly a good sign.

Better than his last start.
Lot of hits but I'm hoping after another rehab he should be OK.

Longhi's blast to RF looked effortless, yet easily cleared the RF fence at Tampa.
Myles FB was mowing down the GCL Yanks today, but his off speed he couldn't get over. Drehoff looked solid over his 3IP.
Chatted with him after his stint for a couple minutes. Seems like a really solid kid.

Better than his last start. Lot of hits but I'm hoping after another rehab he should be OK. Hope all you want, but he is NOT ready for prime time. And even with the impending callup of extra pitchers, we don't need a 5-inning starter. The Christian Vasquez saga is a strange one. A fine season to put himself squarely in the picture as catcher -- except for the passed balls. #22 tonight, with Hernandez on the mound. I wonder if this is becoming some kind of mental block. Is this enough of an issue to keep him down on the farm until he straightens it out? Hard to trust the guy in close ballgames late. Of course, I don't know -- maybe all the PB come in the first 3 innings. And if he can shut down the running game with his arm, maybe he saves more bases than the PB relinquish.

Anthony Ranaudo out of the PawSox bullpen. Piggyback starting for Buchholz, so nothing to read into here, in case anyone was going to. (This post because I had a minor freakout the other night seeing Brendan McGair of the Pawtucket Times tweeting about Ranaudo pitching in relief.

I read some where (quite possible I might be dreaming this, am not really sure) that he tries to catch with his glove even in situations when he should just be blocking the ball causing these passed balls. The intent was to catch more balls with glove so he can throw runners out and also getting up from his catching position a little earlier.

Not that I don't believe you, but it's weird that they brought him out to piggyback an 1.2 innings after Buchholz left.

JDLT finished off Buck's inning b/c they apparently wanted both Wilson and Ranaudo coming in clean. Makes sense when you break it down.

Better than his last start. Lot of hits but I'm hoping after another rehab he should be OK. They went a nutso 5/7 on ground balls (including an infield hit for the sole RBI after a groundball hit, and SB + E2), and 2/4, 2B on outfield flies. Without the BABIP luck, a very encouraging 4.2 or 5 3 0 0 0 2 line (the 5 assuming another GDP).

Congrats to the PawSox who have clinched the IL North division with tonight's 2-1 walkoff win!

Notwithstanding the fact that Dempster has been pretty much a five inning guy all season, do you really think this team is going anywhere without a healthy Clay Buchholz? Maybe they'd win the division but no way they get by teams like Detroit or Texas.

And even with the impending callup of extra pitchers, we don't need a 5-inning starter. Hits allowed in a single outing can be completely misleading. Any time that figure seems out of whack with the SO, BB, and HR allowed, or any time you really want to know how good a guy was, you really have to click on "recap" and read the game log. Check to see how many line drive hits there were (none, in this case). See how they did on ground balls -- only one in four is a hit as a rule, and any difference from that is usually luck. If you exclude fly ball doubles, triples, and homers (which can be assumed to have been legit), only one in twenty other fly balls is a hit, so any fly ball single can be assumed to have been a lucky bloop. And one in three line drives is at a fielder. Buchholz pitched well enough to get to nearly 5 IP. After one more rehab start, that shouldn't be an issue for the 9/10 start against Tampa.

Good to hear some good news finally on the Buchholz front.

Buch should be up to almost full pitch count in 2 more starts. Vazquez I wonder how many came with a knuckleballer on the mound though. same for Butler's stats.
On the other hand, in 2011, Britton and Pimentel were #4/5 on this site, and just behind Ranaudo for best SP prospects. Then they went out and had two of the worst seasons possible and while Ranaudo had yet to flame, he and Doubront (who also looked like a lost cause soon after) was all that was separating us from Kyle Weiland.
Now we just have shut down guys left and right, all the way through the minors. Ranaudo was lights out tonight, Kukuk was dealing (really nice to see)... Times have changed.
