You're too young to be the surly Red Sox fan. You only know the good times... be a new breed... I'm sure you like them well enough - you just love the negativity more...
As for Salty, he's going to start this game; that's obvious. Ross is terrible against RHP, regardless of whether he had a couple hits last night and Salty is much better vs RHP and at Home.
I get that Salty has been struggling and people think he sucks behind the plate and all that, but he should start this game at home vs a RHP. Plus, he was one of the only batters to have good AB's against Scherzer last time around. Why wouldn't you put him in there this time around?

It's like watching Laurel & Hardy bat whenever Salty is in the midst of one of his slumps, as neither him, or Ross are known for the bat when Salty is slumping. Grit ur teeth and bare it, then hope he gets hot. You know I am not a fan of Salty either, but he's a better bat that Ross is out there, especially vs a righty.
Now... If Farrell had kept Lavrnway of the 25 man.. :-)

@espnjoeymac 4m Salty and Xander will both start in Game 6, according to Farrell. So we're seeing with Xander almost exactly what we saw with Ellsbury replacing a then struggling Coco in '07. Awesome. Xander has 8 PAs these playoffs, all against high K power arms who can be dominant when on (Sanchez - 3, Benoit - 2, McGee - 1, Alburquerque - 1, and Rodney - 1). More impressive than getting on 62.5% of the time, he's averaging 5.0 pitches per plate appearance against those guys. Only Sanchez froze him on a 94 mph FB in (a great pitch). Otherwise, it's been remarkable watching his pitch recognition and checking/laying off stuff out of the zone. I'd say the torch has been passed. |

Farrell noted that he's considering moving Victorino out of the number 2 spot. No reporter has mentioned anything on Gomes/Nava. I know I'm beating a dead horse, but if Gomes starts over Nava AGAIN tomorrow, I'll be livid.

You think Gomes has become Farrell's Pedey type buddy Matt? I mean that's great and all if it is the case, but if it's the reason that Gomes is playing over a superior player, then that's pathetic. Pedroia and Francona's close relationship never was an issue on the field, because Pedroia is the type of player who should be in there every single day if he's healthy enough. That's obviously not the case with Gomes. Also, Nava confirmed that he's completely healthy, so yeah, this is completely Farrell being weird. Breaking up a good platoon that worked all season long. There's really no reasoning in that. It's not that Jonny has lit the world on fire either: a .499 OPS for the postseason.

He said he didnt have anything nagging and that he felt as good as he did at end of reg season I don't know why they would refuse to disclose an injury. I mean, Farrell damn sure is due for a real explanation on how he's making these LF decisions. |

Still, I agree with the move on both an expected production point, and a go-with-the-hot-hand point. |

But maybe that's just my pessimistic view. |

With our line up struggles, it really makes no sense to not play Nava just because Farrell has a hunch he is the better choice.
I can understand it maybe for a game or two but nothing more than that against an all righties rotation.

Given that Nava has not PH for anyone yet, or come in for the field, its why I think its some sort of injury.... Its either a "minor" one or its not, and they want to see how he progresses before they take him off the roster (which could explain why he has not PH), since once they do that he is out for the WS (if we get there). Its not uncommon to not disclose an injury I dont think.... |

Earl Weaver was the master at managing lineups vs a pitcher, or a particular one IMO. He would go over scouting reports, throw all lefties in lineups that threw screwballs when that was the best pitch they had. Talk to individual hitters before games and series about pitchers. He placed his lineups to be the most effective as they could
I don't think any manager since has come as close. They just don't pay attention to detail. Get too close to players, follow traditional rules, allow veterans to play to long, get under the thumb of press, afraid of scrutiny.. Weaver ignored all of that mess and went with what he thought would win and that was the bottom line.
Jack McKeon was the closest. I doubt there will be anymore anytime soon that approach the Weaver level.

Look at the wording: "as good ... as the end of the regular season". That may just be a dodge if there were issues "at the end of the season" as well. I've wondered if he wasn't still having problems with the thumb. Back in June, Farrell mentioned that his swing does that digit some dirt every once in a while. |
