According to Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork ( link), the Mets are expected to explore trades for Ike Davis this offseason so Lucas Duda can move back to 1B (and also because of perceived attitude problems). Davis would probably be the best 1B available on the free agent/trade markets if the Mets took offers. What kind of package would you trade for Ike Davis? He has a career .251/.335/.453/.788 line, is 25 years old, and is likely to be a Super 2 player this offseason (four years of team control). While he's only hitting .223/.302/.444 this year, he does have 27 home runs and the low batting average is almost certainly due to a combination of bad luck (.245 BABIP, but a career .293 mark and has posted good BABIPs in the minors) and recovery from a bought of Valley Fever (.859 OPS since the All-Star Break). He's exactly the kind of undervalued (poor recent performance, perceived "attitude" problems), young, and cost-controlled asset the Red Sox should be looking to build around, and the other 1B options range from bad to worse. Eno Sarris looks at hypothetical Ike Davis trades, and mentions the Red Sox as a possible landing spot ( link): So we come to the Red Sox. They need a first baseman, and they like to be competitive every year. They trade often. They have outfielders and catchers. Well... they did. With Cody Ross heading to free agency, and Carl Crawford gone, their only lock for next year is Jacoby Ellsbury. And for all his health issues, he was almost a ten-win player last year and isn't likely to be traded for a first baseman. They do have two interesting catchers. Jarrod Saltalamacchia would be at least a win upgrade over Josh Thole -- but he's only under control for another year.If they focus on getting prospects for Davis, it's a whole new ball game, but it also means that they'll be trading away three 2013 wins without getting any back. That seems like an unlikely proposition. If it did happen, it might be a package based on Ryan Lavarnway and Ryan Kalish from Boston that would leap to the front of the line. At least they're ready to contribute, and in positions of need.
If it's something like Saltalamacchia and Kalish, I make that deal immediately. Lavarnway is tougher, but if it was just a package of Lavarnway and a few filler pieces (some spare bullpen parts or lower-ranked prospects), I'd still pull the trigger. Thoughts?

Pass on Ike Davis. I certainly wouldn't trade any of the players you listed for him. We need a strong RBI hitter playing 1B and we don't need to be trading for & then trying to fix a player with an "attitude". Pass on this player in a big big way.

He's much more interesting than the rest of the available crop. He's under control for a while and he's probably at worst league average, with some legit upside to be much better than that. If we're talking about "value plays", he fits the mold. Leaving Citi Field will be huge for him, and the flukey Valley Fever really impacted his overall numbers, this is the perfect buy low. Salty/Kalish sounds great to me. As much as I liked Kalish he missed a lot of time during a key development stage and there's just a lot of risk there for me. I'd be open to moving Lavarnway and lesser pieces for him as well. I don't want to keep making hypothetical proposals, but he's a great target.
Or maybe we could take on Howard's contract for all the RBI's.

Dmaineah 2 quick points:
1) You do realize that RBI totals are piss-poor method to evaluate players? Whenever an evaluation tool is based on events outside of a players control, that evaluation tool is more than suspect. In 1963 a decent hitter named Yastrzemski only had 68 RBI's followed by 67 in 64, 72 in 65, and 72 again in 1968.
2) You do realize that Ike Davis is on pace to drive in 90 runs this year. So according your logic he is better than Yaz was in all but six of his seasons.
Anyways, back to the interesting discussion;
I would certainly like to see the Sox explore acquiring Davis from the Mets. He certainly has his share of question marks between possible health issues (I don't know how long Valley Fever affects a person), his FB% and IFFB% has jumped this season, his HR/FB is possibly a few points inflated, and he started the season in slump that lasted a few months.
However with that said, he has a solid pedigree, was successful at every level of the minors, and has shown that he can be capable of being a solid mid-lineup bat in his injury shortened 2011 season and over the past 2 months. Most importantly, he is still only 25 years old and is cheap.

Before I expend valuable assets to acquire Davis, or any other 1B in trade, I 'd first see what Mike Napoli wants for a contract. He's not an attitude problem and would like to play here.
Mike can also DH and fill in at C from time to time.
Three yrs., 33m?

I would take Davis. I think him being an ASU guy Pedroia could have an effect on him. His L/R splits are awful this year but as others mentioned since June he has been on fire. Also it looks like our lineup could use a LH hitter going forward. Id sign up for Salty and Kalish.
Sibby I like Napoli as well but his D scares me.

I'd strongly consider him jmei. He is so young and already has been around MLB for 3 seasons. I understand he is a decent fielder, and have never (until this current report(?)) heard anything but him being a GOOD teammate. One mention in a paper and he has a "bad" attitude??? Come on!!
I'm TOTALLY in with a Salty and Kalish swap, if that is what it takes. I really have enjoyed following Ryan Kalish for many years and would hate to see him go, but it sounds like a fair package. I would like to see us have, at least, one really good defensive catcher on board, and I like Lavarnway more than Salty. Neither is what I would call great defensively. I have always worried about the poor performances of our starters with Salty behind the plate.

I would do this in a heartbeat for Salty and Kalish. I was never a big fan of Kalish, but I used to love Reddick. Too bad neither of them were able to stay healthy for us.

I love Davis' road splits. He is terrible vs. LHP though.
Salty + Aceves + De La Cruz

Unfortunately the Sox only have so many trade chips to play with. We can only trade Brentz once.
If the Mets want Salty they can have him - then a bullpen arm or two (Miller, Aceves, Wilson....) and a 2nd tier starting prospect. Davis isn't motivation enough to cough up any big prizes.

Harvey + Davis for Ellsbury + Brentz sounds better to me.

From what I have heard the Mets would like to have him, but he doesn't make sense for them financially. I dont see why the Mets would want Ellsbury. He will be 30 next year and the Mets are probably 3 - 5 years from competing. If i were them i would go the opposite direction and trade David Wright to stock their farm system.

It's 5am on the east coast so I'm not looking to put together a massive post. With that being said, Davis does intrigue me, more so than the likes of Smoak and others. The 30 HR's are tempting and the power is there. His K rates are scary (24.4%), but the walks are somewhat there, and he showed improvement over the course of the season. If we could get him at a descent price I'd be all for it. Truthfully, the Met that intrigues me more is Jonathan Niese. Andy McColough and others reported earlier this month that he could be dealt this offseason. Only problem is this: Do I think Niese is worth the haul Cahill and Gio warranted? No. But regardless, he is an interesting arm to look at this offseason during winter meetings. www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2012/09/mets_could_get_good_return_for.html

Davis definitely fits the mold of players I'd be trying to target next offseason, young, cheap, under team control and not only undervalued but also still going up in the developmental curve. We might have to add some pitching in that offer tough, even if no one major, but instead someone like Mortensen or Carpenter.

Mets also have leverage as it isnt like they need to trade him. Like that article said, hes a great trade chip.

Sandy Alderson was quoted as saying that Davis is a 30 homer guy, and the Mets better have a way of replacing that production. This leads me to believe that the asking price for him may be high. Mets are rebuilding and would be unlikely to ask for high priced veterans in return for Davis.

Their manager also said that they want to build the team between pitching and power hitters so trading Davis would fly on the face of that but it wouldn't be the first time it happens. Bogaert, Barnes, Bradley and De La Rosa are off hand anybody else is in play.

Between Salty & Brentz we have the power hitters to acquire Davis. I would not be surprised if something happened, but I still think Alderson may wrangle something better from another team.

I really doubt that we would even give Salty + Brentz for Davis, and i dont think any other team would give more than their value. Salty alone has provided a similar type of production from the C spot and Davis is pretty much a platoon guy with his L/R splits. I think you may be overshooting his value a little. He does have his youth going for him though. That alone has value.

Between Salty & Brentz = some package including one of them. Or maybe the two together I guess, who knows - I'm skeptical of how much trade value Salty has - only 1 arb year left, mediocre receiver, one-dimensional hitter - what's not to like?
