Are any of the players Schiano recruits? He's been gone a couple years now so that may be coming to an end soon.

The draft is still a month and a half away. The NFL really has become a year-round league, I guess.

They are cutting Gregory - good move - saves 2.305m off the cap - he's not very good - fine 3 or 4th safety but not at the money

He seemed better this past year but, agreed, good move especially with a deep S class (though it kills me that were likely to take one for the 3rd year in a row - and that's not counting McCourty)

The defense is night/day different with a #1 CB (see BB's defense with vintage Law, or with Talib playing to his potential). Trade and work out a new deal for Revis, a la the Moss trade.
If Talib could play every game like "first four 2013 games Talib" I'd be in his corner. Seems like he can't be counted on for health/consistency, so it's time to head to Revis Island...
With the returning players, shutdown corner is the #1 FA priority in my mind. Not the only spot that needs to be addressed, but certainly the most important.

Not too much left on the market for quality corners who will support the run a little (sorry DRC). Finnegan was good at one point, I guess. With all the CB's off the board yesterday, not sure how this defense avoids looking like it has in the 2nd half of the past two AFC championship games (i.e. not good) if they don't get Revis or someone of that quality in a different deal.
Would be a shame to waste a year of #12 at this stage.....

DRC's market has been slow to develop. He really hurt himself by saying he was considering retiring if the Broncos won the superbowl. Revis would be a great get if the price is right but the Jets will almost certainly be in the mix if he gets cut.
Charles Tillman would be a solid fallback target on a prove-it deal (coming off torn tricep) but he could be in line for a reunion with Lovie Smith in Tampa to pair with Verner after they move Revis.
Finnegan isn't a fit for the hole created from Talib walking. He's a slot corner with questionable coverage skills at this stage of his career. The Patriots need someone who can play man on the outside. Finnegan would be a depth signing and not an inspiring one.

I wouldn't be that worried. Talib was talented when he's on the field, but the multiple injuries (including the hip, which pops up at least once a year) and high price tag are enough for me to happily see him off. DRC can't tackle but he's an incredibly talented cover corner who the Patriots might get for cheap. Revis is probably going to be cut today, and though other teams are likely going to be able to make bigger financial commitments, the Patriots have the allure of being in the title hunt year after year. There are also some good mid-level corners available in free agency-- think Walter Thurman, Tarelle Brown, Nolan Carroll, etc., and some of them are going to end up being great value signings. The Patriots might then use some of the cash saved on a CB and spend it on an edge-rusher or interior defensive lineman or safety, and there's always the draft.

Broncos are going for it all next year, since key free agents like Von Miller and both Thomases will be free agents next Spring and they won't be able to keep them all. It's basically the plan that seems so en vogue amongst Patriots fans these days, one that trades a small marginal improvement in the short-term for a painful cap crunch in a few years' time. Talib checked out of the AFC title game with a bone bruise. He's soft. Doesn't change the fact this defense needs a shutdown corner, but he wasn't going to provide it to them.

How can you not like a 1 year deal. Love it. Finally a suitable player to wear my favorite Patriots old number.

Holy ****, it looks like this is actually going to happen. Wow, what a goddamn coup. It's only one year, but Revis probably compensated by accepting a lower AAV and the Patriots can presumably use the franchise tag next year (although Revis had a no-franchise clause in one of his past contracts, so maybe not).

Schefter reported that there is no franchise tag restriction. How can you not like it?
- Revis is better then Talib
- Revis actually plays full seasons and games
- Revis doesn't let a bone bruise take him out of the biggest game of his life
- Revis can be kept on one year deals at reasonable costs for the next couple/few seasons if he's still the best
- Revis will be motivated by one year deals (although I doubt he needs that incentive)
- Patriots get a 3rd round compensatory pick for losing Talib in the upcoming draft (a very nice addition)

Browner visiting Pats. He's suspended for 1st four games but . . . (per Mark Ockerbloom - I guess he's Fox Sports??)
EDIT: Ben Volin suggests that he could play SS after he returns from suspension (if he signs, of course). Looks like he's visiting Washington next.

Yahoo Sports is saying that the Revis deal includes a team option for next season.
EDIT: Looks like it's an option that NE would never exercise ($12.5 roster bonus; 7.5 base plus 500K per game). Not sure if having an option vs being a free agent gives them leverage to negotiate an extension but . . .

The option is just to keep Revis' cap hit down this year-- think Beltre's contract with the Red Sox a few years back. Revis gets a $10m signing bonus and a $1.5m base salary (with $500K in per-game bonuses), so his cap hit will only be $6.5m in 2014. Of course, that means $5.5m will hit the Patriots' cap next year whether Revis is here or not (and, if he re-signs in NE, that $5.5m will be on top of whatever his cap hit would be from his new contract). It gives the Patriots more wiggle room this year, but a pretty hefty hit to their cap space next year. There's no chance they'd exercise the option and keep Revis next year-- it'd be a $25m cap hit, which is just not going to happen.
ADD: also, the fact that Revis is technically under contract for 2015 means the Patriots can't use the franchise tag on him next year.

But if he's great and won't work out an extension they can basically carry the 25m hit if they wanted to just by the cap going up and Hernandez dead money coming off the books. They won't but it's possible.
