Joe Maddon is the definition of the word "smarmy". OTOH, David Ortiz seems to be a self absorbed pussy. Why does he go running his mouth after the game talking about "war" when all he got was a fastball in the ass? Pitchers of other generations would throw fastballs up around the head and really didn't care if the batter got hit or not. Do you think Hamilton's head hunting of Conigliaro in 1967 was unintentional? Don Baylor would get hit every week for crowding the plate and he flicked it off like it was nothing. Youkilis?... the same. Price is an immature jerk for wanting "collective dugout approval" over actually pitching in an important game. He was just lucky he didn't get tossed by an umpiring staff that had no clue. To them I say, "How do you measure intent?" Seriously, how can one person make a judgement about somebody else's "intent" on the field? Umpires of a few years'ago would just keep tossing pitchers out until they behaved themselves.

It's a different game now texasleaguer. There is no tolerance for throwing at anyone anymore. It's one thing if Price throws at Papi. It's completely different if we're not allowed to retaliate, which we weren't and won't be for probably the rest of the season. They deserve it too.

Isn't it finally time to just admit that Xander is at least our 2nd best hitter and slot him 3rd in the lineup for God's sake. I know I've said this at least 3 times over the last month but it is clearly time to ride the horse. We started winning when they put him 2nd. He is clearly our best shot at a middle of the order level bat for all players not named Papi at this point and I think you could make a significant case that Xander is well on his way to even topping Papi but those 12 HR still stand in his way big time.
People and teams often learn the most about themselves when they hit rock bottom. This team should know by now who butters their bread. And if I see another bunt call from Farrell I think I'm going to go ballistic. He doesn't have a small ball team. Get used to it already.

The Sox have won five straight games with Xander in the 2nd spot. Remember what you don't do with a winning streak?
Not that your point isn't valid.

Pedroia is hurt even. It's beyond time for Xander to be the "guy". He is the guy in every way except for the recognition at this point. The 2nd best hitter on the team and the one who hits for average and power as well as OBP. Papi is still the power bat clean up guy.

Here's a reference for what mgoetze lays out, a synopsis of why the team should probably leave him where he is. A lot of this analysis is from Tom Tango. You can read " The Book" to find out more.

For what it's worth, my ideal lineup, when everyone gets healthy, is something like:
Vs. L: Pedroia 1, Bogaerts 2, Ortiz 3, Napoli 4, Gomes 5, Victorino 6, Middlebrooks 7, Ross 8, Bradley 9 Vs. R: Pedroia 1, Bogaerts 2, Ortiz 3, Napoli 4, Nava/Sizemore 5, Drew 6, Victorino 7, Pierzynski 8, Bradley 9

@alexspeier: Farrell on whether Gomes is his everyday LF: 'He's taken the job'
How many ABs did Nava get in his call-up?
And has Cherrington been shot with a tranqulizer dart and hogtied in his office?

I'd rather see Victorino at #1, even if his OBP is not the highest if possibly pedroia's will go up some hitting where he is more comfortable and Farrell has been running 3-4 L/H, or/R/H batters together anyway of late. Having a Victorino, followed by (either way) Pedroia/Bogaerts and then Ortiz would give boston one semblance of speed at the top of the order.

The Pedroia-doesn't-want-to-hit-leadoff stuff is old news. While he's mentioned that he doesn't like hitting leadoff in past years, he's had no problem doing so this year ( see, e.g.). He's had most of his PAs at leadoff this year (roughly half his playing time has come there so far), and he's hit better at leadoff than he has when second or third in the order. He's one of their best hitters and a guy who has an OBP-heavy line-- in other words, the ideal leadoff candidate, at least of any of the Red Sox options. On the other hand, Victorino is a below-average hitter versus right-handed pitching and should not be hitting in the front half of the order against them. Speed is nice at the top of the order, but production (especially getting on base) is way, way more important. Plus, Pedroia and Bogaerts both have slightly above-average speed, even if they're not basestealers.

Nava is the countermove for De La Rosa. Did not see that coming. He hasn't hit since he's been up, but he hasn't gotten much of a chance to. The bullpen (especially the back-end guys: Uehara, Tazawa, Miller, etc.) is a little overextended, but this leaves them with a pretty weak bench (just Hassan, Herrera, and Ross) and 12 relievers. I guess the rationale is that they want a right-handed hitter on the bench for pinch-hitting situations (for Sizemore or Bradley?), but it's not like Hassan has hit much this year either.

I also bet given that RDLR has a nack for getting wild, it would not shock me if he hit someone to get tossed without a warning

Actually, since Herrera is starting (for injured Pedroia), the bench is just Hassan and Ross tonight. The "we need pitchers in the bullpen in case RDLR gets tossed" rationale makes some sense, but they could also use that extra bench position player if any of their position players get tossed.

@alexspeier: Farrell on whether Gomes is his everyday LF: 'He's taken the job' How many ABs did Nava get in his call-up? And has Cherrington been shot with a tranqulizer dart and hogtied in his office? Gomes deserved it, though. He's bolstered his career 93 wRC+ vs. RHP with a 64 wRC+ mark this season. Plus, the energy he's brought to the field has rubbed off on the other outfielders, allowing them to play far better than expected. Now in fairness, the only other options right now are Hassan and Nava. Hassan's given no reason to believe he'd be a superior option vs. RHP, and while I believe Nava is far and away the best option, he hasn't shown much to be optimistic about, and is the only non-RHB we could easily move down for a pitcher, which is indeed what we've done. I hope this Gomes everyday experiment doesn't last too long though -- once we hit a string of RHP's, Nava really should be given a fair shot to reclaim a semi-regular role. He didn't light up Pawtucket in his last stint down there, but his .816 OPS and 17.4 K% (.279 BABIP) vs. right handers were good enough to still be preferable to Gomes.

The Red Sox getter hope that none of their position players get tossed tonight as their bench is really thin. Might make more sense to start Wilson to let him hit a Rays hitter in the 1st inning and then bring in RDLR.

They'd suspend Farrell for 20 games if he did that. Thread would die. And, Mike Andrews would go broke. Kinda sounds like one of those Directv commercials.

Farrell talks about how much he likes Nava and respects him as a player but when the going got tough, he bailed on him last fall in a heartbeat. For Gomes no less, which I completely do not get. Gomes most endearing characteristic is that he looks good in a helmet and does good PR. An occasional HR against mistake pitching. All this just confirms why we needed a better solution last winter in LF, for example signing Choo. Nava never made Farrell a true believer.
I volunteer Herrera as our designated "player to charge the mound" option.

I volunteer Herrera as our designated "player to charge the mound" option. Unfortunately, he's our starting second baseman tonight with no real backup, so he's rather important. I guess there's a possible option if he's ejected-- Hassan in at first, Carp to third (where he took some ground balls this spring), and Holt to second-- but it's a scenario you'd want to avoid (fortunately, Carp is a right-handed thrower, so at least you'd avoid having a lefty play the left side of the infield, which is a historical rarity). Still, the idea of having the smallest guy on your roster as the designated mound-charge is less than ideal. I nominate Gomes-- he's probably the guy on the active roster I'd least want to fight. Those crazy eyes, man...

We just got out of the bleepin Carl Crawford contract and you want to give the same bleepin thing to Choo. That would be IDIOTIC!! Same thing with you Ellsbury fans out there. Live and learn. There are precious few 30+ year olds worth giving 20m+ and 7 years too. Jacoby Ellsbury and Choo got signed to awful contracts. Don't make the same stupid mistake we did in the past. And, please don't compare either to Manny.
