To those in the know, how does Kopech compare to the other HS arms that were available? In a vacuum this may have been a decent pick, but how do you guys feel about it being made while the likes of Reid-Foley and Spencer Adams were available? Maybe Reid-Foley and Adams are gonna get an edjookation?

If Harrison is still there at 66 you've gotta do that right? I thought they were going to grab him at 33. He's a signability problem unsignable at 66

Kopech looks like boom or bust. He could be one of those guys with zero control or an arm injury waiting to happen if they don't smooth out his mechanics or if they can smooth it out, he could be a front line starter with a nasty fastball.

Just a guess, but Chavis around #14, Kopech #22 and Anderson Espinosa at #21 Yeah I might be a little high there on Kopech with his rawness and in the existing system. Speaking of how good is this system. If you pick a relatively highly thought of prep arm and he can't break your top 20 it's probably pretty good.

Houston could have Aiken and Reid Foley or Specer Adams or Monte Harrison. Maybe even two of them.

Can't wait to see the player Miami traded for a reliever at 39. Wish we traded Mujicia for this pick. Kill two birds with one stone.

@timbritton: Chavis: "I'm fairly comfortable saying I am [ready to start my professional career]."
Give the guy a uniform he'll go out and play.

Some thoughts on both:
Chavis: Love the confidence and the family warmth. It looks like his family was overwhelmed but he exuded confidence. That is a unique situation to have achieved at his level coming from a family that appears to be collectively a less than ideal body type. And Chavis doesn't look like he is going to grow much more. I would hope they get him at least 10% under slot and I would consider moving him to catcher. He has a strong lower half and is a tweener in the field. His best shot is at 3rd or catcher to me. Apparently he recently lost a lot of weight ( 30 lbs ) which improved his numbers. Hopefully he can stay in shape. Like his bat speed but his swing looks like it could stand improvement. I really like his confidence though. Remember that Trout was one of the very few who showed up on TV on the day of the draft. Confidence is a big factor. Hopefully he can look it this as a challenge where the door is open for him if he is willing to maintain his recent commitment for excellence.
Kopech has some size and could even fill out a little more. I like the movement on his pitches. He would seem to be a solid pick at 33. A real good high upside opportunity. He seems to like to throw inside quite a bit already and then snake that slider in there for a strike or off the plate. He moves the ball around quite a bit and seems to have a plan out there. I like this pick a lot.
2 high upside guys who will take a while to arrive but I like both picks. I like their intangibles also. Both appear well adjusted and positive. 2 kids we can work with. Both appear to be reasonable and coachable.

If Fischer is there he's the pick. They took the high upside high schooler. Balance that out by taking the safer college bat.

Nick J. Faleris ?@nickjfaleris 17s #RedSox are killing the draft. Killing. The. Draft. This guy is a BP writer who probably was the one who mocked Kolech to us at 33. 33. BOSTON RED SOX (FOR FREE AGENT JACOBY ELLSBURY) MICHAEL KOPECH - RHP - Mt. Pleasant (Texas) HS Both Derek Fisher and Mike Papi, who the team also likes for their pick at No. 26, may very well continue to still be available. However, the Red Sox are fixed on the high school pitching depth at this spot, and Kopech continues to rise draft boards this spring. www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23785

The scouting reports I am finding says Kopech is a low 90s guy but TV said 97 touches 100.. Hmmm. Anyways anyone knows if these guys are going over slot? I saw a tweet yesterday from somebody at BA that mentioned that he was one of only 6 high school pitchers that had an actual 100 MPH radar reading. (In history) ADD: I am probably butchering the wording but it was somewhat similar to that.

I liked Kopech a lot also. I didn't expect Reid-Foley to fall so I didn't look as closely at him.

Chase Vallot gone. I wasn't overly enamored with him based on the reports I read. Lots of holes in his game.

Nice pick by Milwaukee. He wasn't falling to us, Milwaukee needs all the talent they can get in that system

Hate to speculate too much. Hopefully just bonus demands and not some sort of medical or failed drug test.

Just warning ya'll now-- Kopech is more a developmental guy who will probably need a fair amount of time to refine his delivery. Expect speed bumps. Exactly what I was thinking watching him. Power pitcher with a funky motion but you cannot teach 97 mph. There are a couple of hitches in there, but it may not take that long to clean them up. If so, he'll move quickly since there's already good secondary stuff to work with.

If he can generate the same velo out of the stretch I would actually have use that all the time. Faster to the plate, simpler to repeat. With that wind-up I bet command comes and goes too. Could end up as a reliever but not a bad project. As projects go I would've preferred Harrison because of the unique blend of plus speed, plus arm and plus power. I known his hit tool is raw but if he's got good eyes, you can shorten the swing path and the power should follow, not to mention he's still a growing boy.
