Are the dollar amounts intentionally withheld for negotiating purposes?

Still wonder what the delay was. He had another exam on Wednesday in Fort Myers with the Sox' medical team. It was probably a due diligence formality, with the club wanting to have all i's dotted and t's crossed before finalizing any deal. I'd expect the front office to do the same with any other draft signing recovering from major surgery on their most valuable body part.

Six top-ten round picks did not sign, including Aiken/Nix (HOU), Suarez/Byler (WAS), Megill (STL) and Zehner (TOR).

John Manuel reporting the Astros may not gave signed Marshall either. Epic fail. HOU needed the savings from signing Aiken at a discount to sign Nix and Marshall. Without Aiken, HOU lost the salary slot.

how the hell does a player turn down $5mil? Tyler Kolek got $6mm. And all trust between the Aiken team and HOU dissipated. Will be interesting if Aiken goes to UCLA or goes the JUCO route.

Apparently noone told Mr. Luhnow that Mr. Close is only an advisor, not an agent, so obviously he should have been trying to engage with Brady Aiken or the Aiken family instead.

how the hell does a player turn down $5mil? That's exactly what the Astros were counting on when they invented the medical issue after signing the contract pending a physical.

When I heard he didn't sign I went back to the Barrett Loux case with the DiamondBacks selecting him 6th overall with a pre draft deal of 2 million. After that fiasco MLB in its new collective Bargaining Agreement decided that for ALL top 200 prospects have a pre draft physical. I find it strange that none of this kicked up during that. Most likely it's not as comprehensive as a teams physical must be. Obviously 40 percent has to be offered or the team would lose a portion of the draft slot money next year. Also if not offered 40 percent than the player can become a MLB free agent. I'm not so sure he'll qualify for free agency because of the amount of money he was offered. His best argument is if he is deemed by the NCAA as not eligible. It is certainly an interesting case.

@jeffpassan Scary Astros possibility: If Nix wins grievance to pay agreed-upon $1.5M, Houston 17% over bonus pool, would forfeit next two 1st-rd picks
Would be fitting given how much they've screwed up

This Houston thing makes me appreciate the Boston front office. Im not overwhelmed by the talent this year, but they obviously made good picks they liked, had a great strategy, used all their money, and brought in as much talent as possible.
Time will tell as to how it turns out, but cant fault the process/strategy.
It just goes to show how important the picks are to one another. One pick can hold up your offers to other players and you have to guess how much money you can offer or else youre in a crazy stalemate. To sign the top 20 picks for Boston, that is a hell of a job.
