It's pouring, the pitcher's control has been extremely off the whole inning, and you swing at two back-to-back pitches up and out of the zone when ahead in the count? I just can't.

I think the Baltimore head groundskeeper would do decently well in a wet t-shirt contest.
Also, have I mentioned that I would rather play Holt at SS than Herrera?

I would say move him back to the 2 hole with the messed up wrist he is not going to be driving the ball anytime soon. I would probably have Xander hit 3rd with Papi protecting him and see if he can actually drive any runs in. I have not seen any signs that he can yet. But I have high hopes he can. Of course I thought JBJ was ready and that he would hit also. You've got it all wrong. You want a BETTER hitter in the 2 spot than the 3 spot, so Xander is fine there. Also, "protection" has been disproven statistically (Tango et al., "The Book") and anecdotally ( www.fangraphs.com/blogs/joey-votto-and-protection-up-front/ ). Sorry not a sabre geek. While I will buy some of the arguments there is no way I buy them all. Having your best hitter in the 2 hole is not one that I am going to buy. If you do not think that a right handed pitcher would pitch to Xander differently with Ortiz hitting behind him you are nuts.

But it isn't going to change the results in any sort of meaningful way! Baseball is a game of numbers and the numbers send a clear message about this.

I like Cherington a lot, I know it's not necessarily a popular thing to say now with the team the way it is, but I really like him.

I really don't understand why mlb.tv won't let me see pregame, postgame, rain delay stuff, commercials or MLB Network. NFL game pass includes all of that.

That is where you and I differ it is a game between people. The numbers matter but the people matter more. Different guys react different in different situations. How a guy handles a bat. Protection yes it changes it in meaningful ways the more important the situation the more it changes it. It also impacts the decisions the Manager makes. Just like when you have someone that can steal bases it changes the way a pitcher and catcher handle an at bat.

Joey Votto is a person despite rumors to the contrary.

After reading some more of the CBA analysis on SOSH, I think I'm wrong and the Lackey's contract might not roll over, as the section of the CBA I quoted might not apply to him. In which case sitting out a year and coming back in 2016 becomes a much more viable proposition.

Anyone with his numbers that drives in the numbers he does is sad.

A protracted pissing contest is not in John Lackey's interest...nor is missing a whole year of adding to his legacy and chances of making the Hall of Fame. He has less leverage than you guys think he has. He'll be smart about it....and probably get a new contract....but he will not miss a year.

How is he supposed to drive runs in if the bases are empty? All I care about is how to win games, not how to maximize a piece of trivia masquerading as a statistic.

I see an offer of two more years at 25 added on, with the plan being ending up at just under 30 for the next three.

No all you stats guys care about is numbers. That is the problem. I care about winning one game at a time. If that means having the catcher a pitcher likes throwing to catch him that is what I do. As far as Votto Yeah Choo was never on for him last year. Some guys drive in runs some don't. He is your perfect guy for your 2 hole someone like him or Boggs. Both outstanding hitters but not the guys I would want when I needed a big run driven in.

I gotta say...driving home the runs has been a big problem...whether luck or skill or whatever. Let's get some runs this inning!!!!!!!!!!

According to Attachment 10, p. 177 of the CBA, it appears that players no longer until team control (i.e., 6+ year free agents) who are put on the restricted list get removed from it once their original contract is up and become free agents.

Got 1, but still feels empty. Terrible strike zone....guy looks like he'd rather be anywhere but behind the plate.
